## Working with the Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs

- Dinosaur Day

- Lightopia

- Mike Benton Dinosaur Book Launch

- Info Centre Interpretation exhibits & outreach

- FCPD Information Stand at the Information Centre

- We also had lots of interactions over issues of conservation - the Megalosaur repairs and Icthyosaur damage.

- We are working on getting a donated Monkey Puzzle tree planted.

## The role of FoCPP

In April 21 we surveyed our trustees and stakeholders as to what the role of the FoCPP ought to be.

## **Responses told us:**

- Operating the Information Centre

- Coordinating the Secret garden activity

- Providing an organisational voice for the users of the Park

- Providing coordination across the more focused friends groups

## and, possibly:

## - a lobbying role with the Trust to prioritise areas of focus/ get things done

## At meeting in May, it was agreed:

- still in a transition phase for Trust. Continued communication, consultation and collaboration between Friends and Trust was valuable

- No current formal agreement needed - mutually supportive organisations

- Comms e.g. website was ongoing, with Friends feeding into the Trust comms group.

- Info Centre was valuable focal point and presence in the Park

- Quarterly meetings organised by Friends should continue as connection across stakeholder groups

- As Trust expands responsibility for the park, there may be opportunities to further support the Friends and sub-groups e.g. with fundraising.

## Crystal Palace Museum update

## **Some museum highlights of 2021:**

- Successfully reopened in May following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, having been

- closed since March 2020.

- Hosted the book launch of “The Crystal Palace Chronicles: Star of Nimrod” written by

- local author Graham Whitlock.

- Celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Crystal Palace fire 1936 by hosting a local

- school’s children’s writing competition answering the question “What would you exhibit at the Crystal Palace if it reappeared today?”. The event was also supported by Parakeet Books, Martin & Co. and the Upper Norwood Library.

- Brought back their regular monthly guided walking tour as well a few other notable

- guided tours. One of these launched Invisible Palace’s heritage project with the short walk “Sculptures of Crystal Palace Park”. There was also their own annual “The Crystal Palace is on Fire!” special guided walk in December.

- Installed their exhibition on oral history, where visitors are able to use a rotary telephone to dial up the past and listen to interviews of first hand accounts of the Palace.

## Crystal Palace Park Trust update

## **2021**

- The Crystal Palace Park Trust evolved from a volunteer-led community organisation into a registered charity that is now led by full-time professional staff. They added a CEO and Head of Events, and will continue to grow their team in 2022.

- In response to the local desire for a diversity of events in the park, the Trust was thrilled to reactivate the Concert Bowl and to contract to bring a number of music performances last summer that helped bring a sense of normalcy following two very difficult years. They also hosted the popular Lightopia winter lantern festival, which brightened the park on dark winter nights with a family-friendly activity.

- The Trust began implementing its business model and generating revenue in 2021, which will allow them to begin making investments in the park in 2022. They’ll be completing community consultation in early 2022 so that residents can help advise on what improvements are most needed and how money will be spent.

- Through its events programme, the Trust delivered a dozen free events in 2021, ranging from youth music concerts to family movie nights to podcast workshops.

- The Trust hosted their first annual _Summer of Play_ , a free programme of 80 activities for local children and young people, including dance classes, art workshops, fitness games, and more.

## Looking ahead to 2022

**The Friends of Crystal Palace Park:**

- Restore telephone box outside the information centre

- Develop the nature conservation group

- Put on more childrens pop-up art holiday sessions

- Continue to work with the Trust on their events programme, providing a voice for the community

## Looking ahead to 2022

**Crystal Palace Park subway:** Following on from planning permission being granted, a contractor will be appointed for the Crystal Palace Park Subway. **Invisible Palace:**

Invisible Palace will be looking for volunteers to help produce a leaflet for a guided tour of the park sculptures.

## 2022 continued…

## **Crystal Palace Museum:**

- They will be expanding their library of available oral history interviews both in the museum and online with a focus on accessibility.

● Their illustrated talks will be reinstated within the museum, covering varied and detailed aspects of the Palace’s history. This will be in addition to general improvements in the museum, both front of house or behind the scenes.

## 2022 continued…

## **Crystal Palace Park Trust:**

- The Trust will be obtaining a lease to the Concert Platform in early 2022, and will lead its renovation with the help of the hugely successful Back the Bowl crowdfunding campaign and support of the Mayor of London.

- • Phase 1 of the renovation will include a new performance platform and a diverse event programme.

- Phase 2 of the renovations will lead to regular community use of the structure.

- They will continue to work with their partners in the London Borough of Bromley to implement the park’s Regeneration Plan and plan for the park’s handover to the Trust.

- They will be starting an e-newsletter early in the year.

- They will implement additional programming for Park users.
