THE GOOD GRIEF PROJECT
UK charity no 1170244 ANNUAL REPORT April 2020 to March 2021
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 5[TH] JULY 2021
OUR MISSION
Approximately 6000 young people under the age of 24 die in the UK every year leaving up to 50,000 newly bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents.
Our mission is twofold - to support families grieving after the untimely death of a loved one, particularly the death of a child - and to promote an understanding of what it means to grieve in a society that often has difficulty talking openly about death, dying and bereavement. Both of these objectives involve giving a voice to grief – we do this with the films we produce and distribute, by delivering our Active Grief Weekend Retreats, liaising with other bereavement charities and with a sustained activity on social media.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
This is the fourth year of operation in which we have successfully built on our founding resolve to establish the charity as a significant voice within the UK’s bereavement community and an important resource for bereaved families who mourn for the death of a son or daughter. Our activities can be summarised into three separate areas of work
-
FILM PRODUCTIONS – promoting A LOVE THAT NEVER DIES and producing and distributing BEYOND THE MASK
-
Delivering ACTIVE GRIEF WEEKENDS
-
Delivering a number of presentations and talks to various charities, public institutions and corporates
Both Jane and Jimmy continue to work 3- 4 days a week on a voluntary basis though TGGP pays a licence fee to their company Beyond Goodbye Media Ltd. for the use of the documentaries.
We have also been supported by Annabel Richmond who has taken the lead in promoting our work on social media. Annabel works for a small monthly fee.
We are very grateful for the continuing support of The Jessica Mathers Trust who fund us to the tune of £12,000 per annum.
TEN YEARS IN GRIEF
This year also saw the tenth anniversary of Joshua’s death on 16[th] January, a milestone that touched all that knew him, many of who have contributed to the ongoing project “Postcards to Josh’, an online platform that enables one of the key motivations for all our work – that of a continuing bond with the deceased.
“Josh was always one to talk to, to support and offer help. It seems right that he is continuing to open us all up even though he isn’t here. With life has to come death and though losing Josh, I’ve learnt how we navigate the process (of grief) and no matter how tough it may be we are stronger sharing our love and our pain.” (Nat Davis – TGGP Blog January 2021)
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
The Covid pandemic and all the restrictions imposed by the various levels of lockdown have severely hampered our activities during this year. Despite this we have managed the following:
Three online screenings of A Love That Never Dies. (75 mins):
The Centre for Complicated Grief at Columbia University (New York) held a virtual event open to all and followed by a conversation between Dr Katherine Shear and Jane and Jimmy.
Death Positive Libraries (an online film and book club) screened th film during National Grief Awareness Week as part of a programme “Love after Death; Tickets for the Afterlife. This event hosted by Gary (the Scribbler) Andrews.
In November we shared the stage with bereaved parents Dierdre and Liam Nolan at the Sundial Theatre in Cirencester to screen A Love That Never Dies. This event was promoted as a joint fund raiser for TGGP and Children with Cancer.
In total these screenings raised over £2500.
A LOVE THAT NEVER DIES remains the property of Beyond Goodbye Media Ltd to whom TGGP will pay a small monthly licence fee.
Online sales of ALTND have remained steady over the year with revenue from Amazon (UK/US) at £250 and Vimeo (mostly UK and Ireland)) at £125
Beyond the Mask
With the start of restrictions due to Covid, we conceived the idea of producing a short film about grief during lockdown. In May and June we recorded 20 ‘zoom’ interviews with various contributors, all of whom had significant things to say about the impact of the pandemic on their grief. Editing this material took most of the year and we published the final cut (60 minutes) with an online ‘premiere’ on the anniversary of the first national lockdown on 25[th] March again hosted by Death Positive Libraries.
Like many others we realised that in many ways the coronavirus invited us to re evaluate what is important in life, and not unlike the trauma of grief , it asked us to divert our attention away from comfortable assumptions about a so called natural order of things and to consider that when
things get broken, (whether on a personal or social level) we will find amazing and truly imaginative ways of healing and repair.
As with other ‘online’ screenings Beyond The Mask attracted a much larger audience than if we had screened live in theatre.
Some reactions from this event:
“ …fabulous film … well thought out and sensitively put together”
“ … Just beautiful — cathartic, thought provoking, love filled and very, very moving”
“….watching this poignant film makes me feel less alone in my grief”
“Your film touched my soul – thank you”
And from Dr Kathryn Mannix who both appears in the film and chaired the Death Positive event:
'… a thoughtful and reflective film. The hard work, care and love that goes into producing your work is clear to see…. I was left with a feeling of positivity, hope and compassion. The take home being the need to be present, open and kind to others and oneself in grief or otherwise… Thank you for giving us all the opportunity to reflect on a year that has changed us all’.
BEYOND THE MASK received no public or private funding and remains the property of Beyond Goodbye Media Ltd to whom TGGP will pay a small monthly licence fee.
We continue to promote the film in collaboration with other charities with several online screenings planned for 2021.
ACTIVE GRIEF WEEKENDS:
Our programme of weekend retreats again suffered from the impact of covid restrictions. We had to cancel the May event but the September went ahead with 20 participants enjoying a couple of days creative respite from the daily pressures of having to explain your grief. As usual we delivered three courses in photography, creative writing and physical exercise, this time augmented by special sessions on breathworks led by Sharon Jackson.
Among our guest was bereaved mum, Sharon Walker who wrote a sensitive and informed piece for the Observer Magazine. Sharon’s daughter Grace died when she was eight months pregnant – one of every 200 babies that is stillborn. Her article praised the value of our ‘active grief’
philosophy as a way of dealing with all the difficult emotions that come with grief, especially for those who still find it difficult to talk about their loss.

TALKS AND PRESENTATIONS
The year also saw a number of other talks and video presentations about our work nearly all via the zoom video conferencing platform and most dealing with issues surrounding grief, trauma and loss during the pandemic.
May 2020 - Jane and Lizzie Pickering presented a series of six podcasts of their conversations about the world they find themselves in following the outbreak of COVID-19 to children’s charity Together for Short Lives
https://www.togetherforshortlives.org.uk/grief-during-covid-19/
November 2020 - Jane was the keynote speaker for Leeds Bereavement Service’s Annual General Meeting and showed two of our films – Lessons in Grief and the trailer for Beyond the Mask
http://lbforum.org.uk/news-and-events/virtual-annual-general-meeting-2020/
February 2021 - Jane took part in a panel discussion about well being in the workplace for Birmingham NHS Trust.
During the year Lizzie and Jane also presented 4 talks on well being in the workplace to Savills UK and Price Waterhouse Coopers.
‘The Good Grief presentations really brought practical and insightful ways to support people going through a bereavement and subsequent grief.’ Noel McGonigle MBA, HR Director Savills UK, Europe
COLLABORATIVE WORK
This is an important development for TGGP – building relationships like this utilises our particular
insights on grieving in ways that is very positive for our future survival. As one of our partners, Meningitis Now noted we “bring a very unique perspective to the grief journey as bereaved parents themselves and provided our families with a very sensitive and safe environment to share their stories.”
Jane and Jimmy were facilitators and participants in 4 events for the highly successful Good Grief Bristol Festival , originally scheduled for May 2020 but postponed for online only events in October 2020
-
The Art of Pilgrimage - Going Back to move forward. Jane and Jimmy were on a panel discussion about the value of revisiting places where we feel connected to those we’ve lost and showed extract from A Love That Never Dies.
-
Death of a Child - on line panel discussion- Jane joined Gill Mann in conversation with host Mark Lemon about what it feels like when your child dies.
3. When Language Fails- Grieving Creatively. Jane talked to Lesel Dawson and screened a n umber of video clips on the role that creativity plays in processing grief.
- Grief School: Jane joined a panel of bereaved parents, academics and experts to discuss how what positive things can come from loss.
On the final evening of the National Grief Awareness Week, spearheaded by the Good Grief Trust (December 2nd – 8th), and in collaboration with The Sub Rooms, the leading entertainment venue in our home town of Stroud, we flooded the building with an amber glow that lit up the night for miles around .
WEBSITES
We continue to maintain and rely on our two websites to communicate with our community – one for the work of TGGP specifically and one as a stand alone for A LOVE THAT NEVER DIES.
Tom Kihl continues to lead on managing the websites, specifically the work of updating of the previous 2016 version of TGGP site which began in the summer 2020. Andy Dawson of Blue Snapper agency handled the tech and design of this upgrade with a switch to the Kinsta hosting platform. The website is now more ‘visual’ with a much improved speeds, navigation, SEO and performance across different devices
-
We're currently seeing around +/- 150 individual visitors coming to the site per day with 67% of visitors arrive on the site via their mobile phones or other handheld devices.
-
The US sometimes surpasses the UK in terms of visitor numbers, with by far the most traffic coming from one or other of these nations.
-
Germany, Singapore, Canada, Ireland and France head up the lower level of regular visitors
Our next steps include the addition of a new logo, calendar events now the real world beckons a bit more, and developing the news/blog pages to be gathered into monthly Mailchimp newsletters.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Our thanks go to Annabel Richmond for all her help in developing our strategies for social media an increasingly important way of communicating our core message and linking with others (charities and individuals) as part of a general conversation around death, dying and bereavement. We currently are active on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram.
Overall, the trend has been an increase in followers on all three social media platforms. This hopefully means, that word about the project is continuing to be spread internationally. The aim of the communications includes: raising awareness of the project, encouraging fundraising and bringing comfort by means of a like-minded peer to peer community.
Early on in the pandemic we started a new FB and IG page ‘You Are Not Alone In This’ inviting participants to share newly created photographic expressions of their grief. This group now has 275 members.
Engagement on all platforms has been climbing steadily over the year. Our audience remains predominantly female - it would be good to find ways of reaching out to more men in the coming year. The best performing posts continue to be the very personal stories posted by Jane and Jimmy.
On Facebook our followers increased from 2995 in April 2020 to 4,257 currently (an increase of 20%) with an average post engagement of 3,500 per week.
On Twitter our audience has grown by 31% with the numbers of followers increasing to 5589 over the year. Jane’s professional persona and standing is very well respected on this particular platform and this conversational stage serves the charity very well indeed.
INSTAGRAM : The total number of followers is now 2170 an increase of 61% over the previous year. It is reassuring to know that this platform has reached so many. (https://www.instagram.com/thegoodgriefproject/) Our Instagram bio has been adapted to include a ‘Link tree’ where individuals can be quickly redirected to our areas of work and items of interest: LINKTREE
Networks and our place within the bereavement community and relationship to other charities
We continue to develop our relationships with other bereavement charities in the UK many of whom have used the documentary A LOVE THAT NEVER DIES to engage in the national conversation about death dying and bereavement. We have regular and friendly contact with Cruse, Child Bereavement UK and The Compassionate Friends. We have also established firm ties with Meningitis Now following the work we did with them on their first “Forever Weekend’. It is hoped that this will continue with a commitment from them to sponsor places on our Active Grief Weekends.
Throughout the year we took part in various planning meetings for Good Grief Festival Bristol - the first ever festival of ‘love and loss’ in the UK – due to have taken place in May 2020.
Jane is also on The Dying Matters Forum and Hospice UK People in Partnership Group and The Gloucestershire Bereavement Forum, as well as The House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Group on Bereavement Support. She attends meetings for all these on a quarterly basis.
FUNDRAISING
It’s been a mixed year – as a small charity it seems that we can be overlooked in favour of larger bereavement charities and both our fundraising challenges to Kilimanjaro and the Yorkshire Three Peaks have been postponed to 2021.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
In March 2021 Jane and Jimmy moved from their Gloucestershire home to a rented property in Totnes in South Devon. While they look for a house to buy their own contributions to TGGP may be reduced slightly over the coming months.
That said our plans for the future include:
1. A new book
We have invited by the Stroud based Hawthorn Press to produce a book on grief and creativity with a working title of ‘WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH – creative responses to grief”. The manuscript should be in by August 2021 with publication is scheduled for spring 2022.
2. A new Film
We have also started a new film production about the rights and wrongs of assisted dying. This is a long term project and is currently not funded. We imagine it will follow similar format to our previous productions – ie the film is used and promoted by TGGP but owned by Beyond Good Media Ltd.
3. Active Grief
To continue developing our practice and philosophy around active and creative grief and as covid restrictions are relieved to plan for and deliver more weekend retreats during 2022.
4. Screenings
To continue to deliver and promote screenings of A LOVE THAT NEVER DIES and BEYOND THE MASK in collaboration with other charities and organisations. Dates already scheduled with Stroud film Festival, Cruse Bereavement Care, Compassionate Communities and Death Positive Libraries.

2. Accounting policies
2.1 Basis of preparation of financial statements
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006.
The Good Grief Project meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy.
2.2 Income
All income is recognised once the Company has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.
2.3 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.
Expenditure on raising funds includes all expenditure incurred by the Company to raise funds for its charitable purposes and includes costs of all fundraising activities events and non-charitable trading.
Expenditure on charitable activities is incurred on directly undertaking the activities which further the Company's objectives, as well as any associated support costs.
Grants payable are charged in the year when the offer is made except in those cases where the offer is conditional, such grants being recognised as expenditure when the conditions attaching are fulfilled. Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end are noted as a commitment, but not accrued as expenditure.
All expenditure is inclusive of irrecoverable VAT.
2.4 Debtors
Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

2.5 Cash at bank and in hand
Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short-term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.
2.6 Liabilities and provisions
Liabilities are recognised when there is an obligation at the Balance Sheet date as a result of a past event, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefit will be required in settlement, and the amount of the settlement can be estimated reliably.
Liabilities are recognised at the amount that the Company anticipates it will pay to settle the debt or the amount it has received as advanced payments for the goods or services it must provide.
Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation. Where the effect of the time value of money is material, the provision is based on the present value of those amounts, discounted at the pre-tax discount rate that reflects the risks specific to the liability. The unwinding of the discount is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities as a finance cost.

General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the Company and which have not been designated for other purposes.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021
Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of The Good Grief Project ('the Company')
I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 March 2021.
Responsibilities and Basis of Report
As the Trustees of the Company (and its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of the Company's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent Examiner's Statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities [applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)].
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
This report is made solely to the Company's Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the Company's Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner's Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Company and the Company's Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
