Trustees Annual Report 2022-2023

What is Shadeaid?

It is a voluntary organisation that caters for the deprived people of South Sudan including widows and orphans.

Aims and Objectives:

Shadeaid aims to relieve the needs of its beneficiaries in South Sudan and other areas and countries where they live or take refuge. This can be achieved by:

  1. Helping to establish a charity shop in South Sudan if the security situation allows.

  2. Setting up a ‘Well Women clinics’ in one of the villages such as Pageri in Eastern Equatoria, also depending on the security of the village.

  3. Setting up funds to enable deprived children to attend schools and enable others access to wider educational provisions.

  4. Undertake other such charitable events and activities as seen fit by the trustees to further the objectives of Shadeaid such as teaching life skills to deprived women and men to help them sell hand- made crafts, jewellery etc. so that they can depend on themselves and provide for their families.

Areas of work of the charity:

It was agreed by the trustees that the main work of the charity should be in secure areas of South Sudan or in refugee camps , in countries neighbouring South Sudan such as Uganda, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic.

Management of the charity

The charity is managed by the Management Committee which is made of three people:

  1. Alma Ettore: The Chairperson; whose main duty is to oversee the smooth running of the charity such as chairing meetings, representing the charity in the UK and overseas if it is within the aims and objectives of the charity. The Chairperson also has the duty to maintain good working relationship with other similar groups or organisations and delegate tasks within the organisation, in line with Shadeaid constitution.

  2. Sarah McGrath: The Secretary General; whose main duty is to take minutes of meetings and act in the absence of the chair. Her responsibilities include keeping a record of all the employees of the charity, record all the assets and compile an end of year report to be given to the Management Committee.

  3. Cynthia Ettore: The Treasurer. Her main function is to keep the financial accounts of the charity, organise fundraising events , collect donations and keep all the receipts for money received and spent by Shadeaid. Another duty is to provide financial reports to the Management Committee and Annual General Meetings.

The total of all the money paid into the account in the period 1/04/22 to 31/03/23 is:

£945.75 , including £621.75 being the money for a community event.

The total money withdrawn from the account in the period 1/04/22 up to 31/03/23:

  1. On 30/05/22, £160 sent to a South Sudan IDP camp to help alleviate hardships.

  2. On 20/06/22 The chairperson was reimbursed £2000.00 from Shadeaid after she paid money for services and food to IDP camp during the crisis in South Sudan in Tombura ( Western Equatoria state) from her own personal account.

In around August 2021, many people in Tombura county were killed in their homes by government militia and the rest had to seek refuge in a church, school and the surrounding forest. The money sent by Shadeaid was to alleviate hunger and buy essential medicines for the very vulnerable.

The money was mainly sent to nominated people in Juba and they sent it on to people in Tombura.

On 27/08/21 the Chairperson of Shadeaid sent £750.00 to Isoke Eric Alfred Riruyo through Western Union to help alleviate hunger and sickness at the start of the Tombura crisis in the IDP camp which was mainly the church and the UN compounds.

On 03/11/21, £159.40 through Dahabshill (money transfer Agency) was sent from the chairperson’s account to Paiyo Charles Angelo Arona mainly for food in IDP camp in Tombura.

On 7/11/21 , £80.61 was sent through Dahabshill agency by the chairperson to Joseph Peter Missa to help young children and their mothers in Tombura.

On 15/12/21 , £82.01 was sent through Dahabshill agency to Paiyo Charles Angelo Arona for food to the IDP camp in Tombura.

In Khartoum the chairperson sent money for the elementary school funded by Shadeaid as following:

On 27/01/21 £79.10 was sent to William Zeno Riko ( headmaster) through Dahabshill by the chairperson of Shadeaid to help buy teaching materials in the school.

On 0/02/21 £380.00 was sent to William Zeno Riko the headmaster through Dahabshill who requested to help patch part of the school roof and renovate at least 3 classes.

On 12/05/21 £240.00 was sent to William Zeno Riko ( Headmaster) by the chairperson , through Dahabshill mainly for benches and other school essential furniture.

The Chairperson has also been reimbursed out of the £2000.00 for moneys she previously paid as following:

On 24/02/21 she paid £99.00 for Shadeaid website hosting

On 10/11/22 she paid £97.10 to Jesca Peace Munduru through Western Union for foodstuff as she is looking after orphans in Uganda.

The total money the chairperson spent was £1967.22.

The chairperson owes Shadeaid £32.78

  1. On 3/03/23, £674.00 (including £52.25 from Shadeaid) was withdrawn for the fund- raising purpose , to host a community event in Manchester in November 2022 by the Equatorian Community.

Therefore, the total money withdrawn (spent) from the account: £160+ £2000.00+ £674.00 = £2,834.00

The loss of funds in this period from 1/04/22 up to 31/3/23 is:

£945.75 - £2,834= £ -1889.00

The total income on 4 /03/23 is £2,668.25

Recommendations:

The trustees must start a plan of increasing the income by:

  1. Fund raising

  2. Looking for donors.

  3. Cutting down costs to a minimum.
