## **3.0 Structure, Governance and Governing Document**

The Peace Institute is a Charitable Incorporated Organization (COI) and has been registered with the Charity Commission since November 2016 under charity number 1170207. Further details are available on the Charity Commission's website.

## **4.0 Organisational Structure**

The trustees are responsible for the control and management of the COI. They volunteer their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits.

The trustees meet regularly and are responsible for all decisions taken about running the organization and the activities provided by the COI. To assist in the smooth running of the charity the trustees recruit volunteers on a project-byproject basis.

## **5.0 Appointment and Induction of Trustees**

The Board is responsible for the recruitment of all new trustees. No new trustees have been appointed this year. As and when new trustees are recruited they will be chosen for their understanding of the community and will have earned the respect of the wider community or have the potential to do so.

- When recruiting new trustees, we will seek to identify young people who,

- Regularly attend events and functions organised by the charity.

- Are willing to volunteer to help in our broader community work.

- Can represent Islam as a peaceful way of life.

Potential trustees will be invited to attend trustees' meetings as observers and will be given more details of the charity's aims and activities and, if all agree, they will then be proposed as new trustees at the subsequent trustees' meeting. This process allows due consideration of the person's eligibility, personal competence, specialist knowledge and skills.

Following the appointment, new trustees will be introduced to their role and

given copies of the trust deed and a guide to the policies and procedures adopted by our charity. Several publications from the Charity Commission are also signposted including the guidance on charities and public benefit and the advancement of religion for the public benefit. This ensures that new trustees are aware of the scope of their responsibilities under the Charities Act. Initially, new trustees will work with an existing trustee assisting with particular activities and projects run by the charity.

## **6.0 Risk Management**

The trustees assess risks on a project-by-project basis and satisfy themselves that adequate systems are put in place.

## **8.0 Strategies**

The trustees are still committed to building a "Peace Centre" which will be a onestop facility where all people (people of faith and no faith, Muslims and nonMuslims) or those who wish to know more about our faith can gather together to learn.

This facility will be accessible to all who wish to understand real Islam in the 21st century and its compatibility with global universal values and train the next generation of youth.

## **9.0 Activities for the Financial Year**

The activities of "The Peace Institute" have been varied and cover aspects of social work with youth, social cohesion and awareness raising throughout the world concerning injustices and prejudices in societies.

Our activities and initiatives included the following;

## **9.1 Interfaith Forums**

This forum is a valuable avenue for building understanding between people of faith and no faith. It draws members from the Muslim, Christian, Judaic, other faiths and no faith. It discusses various aspects of faith issues locally, nationally and internationally to offer support for each other.

## **9.4 Encouraging Democratic Participation**

## **15.0  Trustees' Responsibilities**

The Charities Act requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to;

**Trustee's Annual Report Financial Year Ending - 01 Jan 2023**

**Page 9 of 12**

- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.

- Make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

- State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements.

- Prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the trust. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the trust and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
