## 2.0 Introduction

This year has been very challenging due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. Considerable work has been undertaken to guide the local community through these difficult times.

Various Covid 19 guidance was issued in partnership with local senior Ulama and other community organisations. The Peace Institute was engaged in promoting the vaccine for public safety.

Photograph on the right shows a visit to Batley by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP with one of our Directors at the IMWS vaccine centre.

The Covid pandemic did not discourage the Peace Institute to work on community engagement virtually and sending out press statements, joining in on virtual conferences for justice and harmony.

## 3.0 Structure, Governance and Management

## 3.1 Governing Document

The Peace institute is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (COI). Its principle office is in England and was registered with the Charity Commission in November 2016 under charity number 1170207. It is governed by its governing document dated November 2017.

## 3.2 Organisational Structure

The charity trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits.

The trustees meet on a regular basis and are responsible for all decisions regarding the running of the organisation and its charitable activities. To assist in the smooth running of the charity the trustees have set up a number of sub-committees that help them oversee certain aspects of the charity’s work.

## a) Finance

This committee oversees the financial management and report back with their recommendations to the full meeting of the trustees.

## b) Activities

This sub-committee looks after the operational requirements detailed below. The trustees chair the subcommittees whose membership reflects the particular skills that are required for the work in hand. The day-to-day management of the organisation and projects are delegated to volunteers.

## c) Donations

A separate committee deals with the collection and distribution of Zakat, Sadaqa and Lillah. It meets as required to deal with the collection and distribution of the funds.

## 4.0 Risk Management

The trustees have assessed the risks the charity faces and have drawn up a risk matrix which identifies the major risks by area of activity, the nature of those risks, the likelihood of the risks occurring and the measures taken to manage them. The trustees review this risk matrix regularly at their meetings. The trustees are satisfied that systems are in place, or arrangements are in hand, to manage the risks that have been identified.

Directors of the Peace Institute were involved with Christian clergy to develop RSHE guidance titled, “Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE _) Practical Guide to Faith Sensitivities for Schools_ ”[1] , to help parents and schools to ensure schools understood faith sensitivities and avoid adverse publicity outside schools.

The guidance summarises evidence based sensitivities relating to Islam and Christianity from the Quran and the Bible.

Schools and parents welcomed this easy to read guidance and commented very positively on the scenario and the FAQs which they found very useful.

## 7.7 Mosque Open Day

Following the successful Mosque Open Day in 2019, the Peace Institute had planned a Mosque Open Day which could not go ahead due to Covid 19 lockdown. The Directors had planned a visit from students at Istanbul University to learn from the Peace Institute on how to project manage a successful Mosque Open day.

The Directors are in the process of planning another Mosque Open Day soon as it is safe to do so. Discussions are in progress for a group of Students from Istanbul University to visit us to learn how to carry out a Mosque Open day.

## 7.12 Covid 19 Pandemic and The Vaccination

The Directors of the Peace Institute are committed to safety during the Covid 19 pandemic. Our position is people should be encouraged to get vaccinated. As such we have produced various guidance throughout the pandemic to support vulnerable people.

We have worked closely with other UK registered charities on a variety of projects during Covid 19 lockdown. We produced the following guidance to help the Muslim community available on IMWS and other websites.

## 9.0 Income Sources

All the funds received by The Peace Institute are solely from Muslim donors in the form of Zakat, Sadaqa, Fitrana and Lillah. We have not received any other funding this year nor previously.

## 10.0 Going Concerns

The Peace Institute is financially stable to meet its obligations and continue its charitable work for the foreseeable future. Its activities are run by the trustees and volunteers in a purely voluntary capacity.

## 11.0 Plans Going Forward

The Peace Institute is now ready to take the next leap. We have seen some delays due to the Covid 19 pandemic. However, as this report shows we have tried to keep up with the challenges in these difficult times.

We are planning to build a **“Peace Centre”** in Kirklees for the benefit of all the community regardless of their background. It is envisaged that the centre will be a state of the art matchless facility for and will be a beacon of peace and understanding between Islam and the West. We propose to build a facility accessible by all who wish to understand real Islam in the 21st century and its compatibility with global universal values and train the next generation of youth.

## 12.0 Trustees' Responsibilities

The Charities Act requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to;

- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

- State whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements.

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the trust. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the trust and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
