**Performances and The Company**
•Three Score Dance (TSD)
commissions work that engages, educates,
entertains and captures imagination;
delivers performances that change
perceptions, challenge expectations and
champions the art form of contemporary
dance.
The year’s artistic focus centred on Jute,
Three Score Dance’s outdoor performance
work, by renowned international
choreographer Takeshi Matsumoto. The
work reached large public audiences as
part of Brighton Fringe on the seafront at
the West Pier - a free outdoor performance
drawing an audience of over 2000 people.|
Activities in 2024/25 included: 30 Company rehearsals with 18 performers working towards new work for 25/26 _Betwixt_ and rehearsing _Jute_ . The production will preview at Brighton Festival in May 2026, with touring planned through 2026–2028. 7 performances and events featuring _Jute,_ including the Ageing Well Festival at Brighton Dome, Brighton Fringe at West Pier, University of Chichester, and outside The Dance Space at Circus Street reached a total audience of circa 2600 people across the year. A trustee away day included discussion of the charity’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) commitments as a sign of how the charity is growing. A decision was made to begin new three year agreements with the performing company dancers, and to reduce company size from September to give a more in depth experience for the dancers and be easier to tour, given the increased cost of touring. **Provision of Classes** TSD provided regular weekly contemporary dance classes split over three terms which developed technique, creativity and performance skills. These took the dancers on an exploration of creative stimuli through somatic journeys that were as exciting as they were thought provoking. TSD provided 144 affordable classes in this period and also provided paid employment opportunities for 15 dance artists running different classes, workshops and outreach sessions including: • Weekly dance classes across three strands: Contemporary technique for 55+ (beginner) Contemporary technique for 55+
(general/advanced) Creative class for 55+ • Summer schools with guest artists Jonathan Burrows and Marisa Zanotti A total of 124 people aged 55 to 80+ attended our regular classes and summer school this year. **Workshops** Sector engagement included a presentation at the University of Chichester’s ‘What Dance Can Do’ event. A trustee away day including discussion of the charity’s EDI commitments as a sign of how the charity is growing. A decision was made to begin new 3 year agreements with the company dancers, and to reduce company size from September to give a more in depth experience for the dancers and be easier to tour, given the increased cost of touring. **Outreach programme** Our Outreach programme sought to engage people regardless of “age, stage or ability.” We delivered workshops with community groups and in a variety of settings to share new opportunities to dance in Brighton and Hove. These sessions (both seated and non) targeted those isolated because of age and illness, encouraging them to experience the joy and benefits of movement and integration. In the year 2024/25 we delivered 27 outreach and external events, 23 of which were completely free, including: Strengthening our partnership with community group, The Hawks in
Whitehawk, supported by Trust for Developing Communities, we established a regular programme of outreach sessions with both the multicultural and women’s groups for people ages 50+, including wheelchair users. We delivered taster sessions with The Clare Project, a support organisation for trans, non-binary and intersex adults aged 50+. Outreach sessions at The Hop 50+ cafe in Hove, supported by Impact Initiatives and delivered by dance artist Hayley Ovens, reached 8 new participants. We delivered social events inviting all participants across our programmes, including a studio sharing of work and social, and a Club Night for over-55’s at a local Brighton venue. Across our outreach, event participation opportunities and regular classes we reached over 770 participants, exceeding our target of 600 participants this year. **Conferences** Sector engagement included talks and presentations: Artistic Director Jason Keenan-Smith was invited to present the company’s work across two sessions at Arts Council England’s Art of Engagement conference in Salford - recognition of Three Score Dance’s standing in the creative ageing sector. Jason presented at the University of
Chichester’s ‘What Dance Can Do’ symposium. General Manager/Producer Hayley Ovens presented our activities to the Older People’s Network for Brighton & Hove, and the Age UK social prescribing team. We co-programmed a creative day of events as part of Brighton & Hove Ageing Well Festival 2024 (Impact Initiatives) with Brighton Dome, including a performance by Acting our Age (Flexer & Sandiland), workshop by Kate McCoy (small performance adventures), and pop-up performances by our company. We worked with community partners, built new connections and strengthened existing ones with organisations including Impact Initiatives, Brighton Ageing Well Festival, Trust for Developing Communities, Centre for Ageing Better, South East Dance, The Clare Project, Brighton Dome & Festival, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Active for Life team, Age UK West Sussex Brighton & Hove, and the Older People’s Network for Brighton & Hove. These collaborations and connections have increased participation from under-represented communities, are working towards referral pathways (e.g. social prescribing), and have enhanced our advocacy for the role of dance and the arts in healthy ageing across the city and beyond. As noted above, the year’s artistic focus
centred on Jute, Three Score Dance’s
specially commissioned outdoor
performance work by the renowned
international choreographer Takeshi
Matsumoto. This reached large public
audiences at the University of Chichester
and on Brighton seafront at the West Pier
— the latter being three sold-out, free
outdoor performances drawing an audience
of over 2,000 people. A highlight of each of
the shows was when members of the public
were invited to join the dancers on stage to
participate in the finale. Several hundred
members of the public of all ages took part
in the free dancing, resulting in
overwhelmingly positive feedback for the
charity.
For the dancers, performance is far more
than the culmination of rehearsal: research
by Academic Researchers (due to be
published in 2026) into the company’s work
has found that performing together|
generates a distinct sense of collective strength and belonging, with dancers describing the company as “family” and the experience of going on stage together as something that gives them courage and connection they carry into their wider lives. Summer schools with artists Jonathan Burrows and Marisa Zanotti were fully subscribed, reflecting both the strong demand for high-quality creative practice and the appetite within our community for work that challenges and extends them. The dancers consistently describe the value of being stretched and the satisfaction of overcoming difficulty together. NB University of Chichester research into participants’ experiences (findings awaiting publication) found that involvement in the company supports sustained wellbeing, not only through the physical practice of dancing but through the depth of purpose, challenge, and human connection it provides. **Key Achievements in Participation and Partnership.** We expanded our teaching provision this year, with respected local teacher Hayley Ovens joining as an outreach teacher. New partnerships included sessions with The Clare Project, a Brighton-based support group for transgender and non-binary adults aged 50+, and continued outreach with The Hawks’ multicultural and women’s groups in Whitehawk, reaching participants including wheelchair users. Social opportunities remained central to our offer: an Easter sharing, a December ‘club night’ for over-50s, and informal community moments throughout the year reflect our understanding that connection is as important as participation. Across our outreach, event participation opportunities and regular classes we reached over 770 participants, exceeding our target of 600 participants this year. Sessions took place at new community locations, including Robert Lodge Community Rooms (Whitehawk), The Hop
|||50+ and Dorset Gardens Methodist Church
helping us reach older adults who have
experienced barriers to accessing arts and
wellbeing opportunities.
Our activities enabled hundreds of older
people to access regular creative
movement and dance activities that support
healthier, more connected ageing. Across
the programme year we engaged over 770
participants in classes, workshops and
performances. Many participants are older
adults living alone, managing long-term
health conditions, or experiencing social
isolation. For many, Three Score Dance
provides a rare opportunity to remain
physically active while also engaging
creatively and socially.
Participant feedback consistently highlights
improvements in confidence, mobility,
wellbeing and sense of belonging. Classes
provide a welcoming environment where
older people can challenge themselves
physically while feeling supported by a
community of peers.
Participants told us:

Beyond individual wellbeing, our work contributes to the wider community by challenging negative perceptions of ageing and demonstrating the creativity, resilience and vitality of older people through dance.

**The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).**
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and aims**
The charity has two key objectives:
One. To advance public appreciation of, and education in, the art of dance, as performed by people over 60, by public performance, classes and workshops.
Two. To provide dance facilities and experiences of the art of contemporary dance for the over 60s in the interest of social welfare with the object of improving their conditions of life.
## **Significant activities**
The significant activities undertaken to achieve our purposes are:
Performance - including commissioned work.
Classes - weekly contemporary dance classes which develop technique, creativity and performance skills.
Workshops - introducing new contemporary dance experiences from new choreographers, experts in the field and dance groups.
Outreach Programme - to engage people regardless of age, stage, or ability.
Conferences - attending and participating in conferences sharing experience and knowledge of the benefits of the art of contemporary dance for the over 60s in the interest of social welfare.
All of the above areas are expanded upon in the Trustees Annual Report for the period
## **Public benefit**
Our emphasis is on the over 60s as participants but we also provide public benefit in the following ways:
Performance - we entertain and educate all our audiences whatever their age.
Classes - we hold classes and summer schools for the over 55s.
Outreach - we cater for people isolated because of age and illness encouraging them to experience the joy and benefits of movement and integration.
Workshops - we provide employment for the wider artistic community.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 August 2025.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with:

The accounts present a true and fair view and the accounting policies adopted are those outlined in note 2.

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

**The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).**
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and aims**
The charity has two key objectives:
One. To advance public appreciation of, and education in, the art of dance, as performed by people over 60, by public performance, classes and workshops.
Two. To provide dance facilities and experiences of the art of contemporary dance for the over 60s in the interest of social welfare with the object of improving their conditions of life.
## **Significant activities**
The significant activities undertaken to achieve our purposes are:
Performance - including commissioned work.
Classes - weekly contemporary dance classes which develop technique, creativity and performance skills.
Workshops - introducing new contemporary dance experiences from new choreographers, experts in the field and dance groups.
Outreach Programme - to engage people regardless of age, stage, or ability.
Conferences - attending and participating in conferences sharing experience and knowledge of the benefits of the art of contemporary dance for the over 60s in the interest of social welfare.
All of the above areas are expanded upon in the Trustees Annual Report for the period
## **Public benefit**
Our emphasis is on the over 60s as participants but we also provide public benefit in the following ways:
Performance - we entertain and educate all our audiences whatever their age.
Classes - we hold classes and summer schools for the over 55s.
Outreach - we cater for people isolated because of age and illness encouraging them to experience the joy and benefits of movement and integration.
Workshops - we provide employment for the wider artistic community.

## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Three Score Dance ('the Company')**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 August 2025.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts.
The accounts have been prepared in accordance with:
- Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities published on 16/07/14
- the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)
- and with the Charities Act 2011.
