Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
Provide dance facilities and experiences of the art of contemporary dance Performance •Three Score Dance (TSD) commissions work that engages, educates, entertains and captures imagination; delivers performances that change perceptions, challenge expectations and champions the art form of contemporary dance. Commissioned and performed Ko:ra by company Artistic Director Jason Keenan-Smith. Performance at HOST at DanceEast studios in May 2024. A platform celebrating dance and age. Performance at St Ann’s Wells community festival in May 2024. Provision of Classes TSD provided regular weekly contemporary dance classes splitover |
three terms which developed technique, creativity and performance skills. These took the dancers on an exploration of creative stimuli through somatic journeys that were as exciting as they were thought provoking. The classes also provided paid employment opportunities for 12 dance tutors running different classes and workshops. A total of 222 people aged 55+ attended our classes this year (including two summer schools). (NB in the figures above, many people attended more than one course). Workshops • The workshops held for our classes developed team cohesion and shared company and class achievements and experience of contemporary dance. The aim of workshops was to introduce new contemporary dance experiences from new choreographers, experts in the field and dance groups to enrich the understanding of contemporary dance of all participants and to provide employment for the wider artistic community. (See also Outreach below) Outreach programme • Our Outreach programme sought to engage people regardless of “age, stage or ability.” We delivered workshops in community centres and other settings to share new opportunities to dance in Brighton and Hove. These sessions (both seated and non) targeted those isolated because of age and illness, encouraging them to experience the joy and benefits of movement and integration. In the year 2023/24 our Outreach programme provided 144 classes for 486 people aged 55-84 in senior housing and community clubs including: Whitehawk 50+ Multicultural Group, Hove Hop Aged 50+ Group, Hangleton Local Aged 50 + Group, Patching Lodge Supported Housing, Tower House Community Centre, Cornerstone Community Centre, Age UK Brighton & Hove (Older People’s Network Impact Initiatives), Together Co and Anchor (senior housing organisation).
| Conferences • TSDattended and participated in professional conferences sharing experience and knowledge of the benefts of the art of contemporary dance for the over 60s in the interest of social welfare. TSD extended our co-operation with partners such as: The Black and Minority Ethnic Community Partnership, Brighton Ageing Well, the Trust for Developing Communities, Chalk Clif Trust, South East Dance, Brighton Dome and the Active for Life team at Brighton and Hove City Council. Our Artistic Director also contributed to an online Critical Dance Pedagogy event hosted by University of Coventry, reflecting on Three Score’s approach as a dance provider for older people. |

| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Performance We developed a new work for outdoor settings called Ko:ra, drawing on our Artistic Director’s Irish heritage with recorded Irish folk music and choreography showing aspects of storytelling and relationships. With grant support from Arts Council England TSD delivered a wide range of performances, community events, outreach workshops, and strategic developments. Activity highlights include successful appearances at regional festivals and the strengthening of research and outreach partnerships across the South East. These activities support our mission to engage older people in high- quality dance and to challenge preconceptions about age and creativity. New work for live audiences. Ko:ra by Jason Keenan-Smith was a new live performance. It was a development of our previous work ‘Obs!’, but was completely reworked and adapted for performance outdoors during this period. We presented Ko:ra at DanceEast’s HOST event and in outdoor settings for the Take Part Festival and Our City Dances in Brighton and Hove and at EllieFest in Steyning. Key Achievements in Participation and Partnership. TSD continued to provide “Club Nights” - Intergenerational community events linked to the Big Give fundraising campaign. These included DJs, equipment hire, and accessible dance sessions provided by TSD. These were supported by company volunteers and promoted across classes. TSD gave a full performance at the Take Part Festival in Brighton in June 2024 together with a separate participatory workshop for the public. As part of the Festival, TSD also delivered two “have a go” taster classes on 24thJune and 7thJuly. TSD participated with a full performance in the Elliefest in July 2024. TSD delivered a workshop as part of the |
Hangleton & Knoll Festival in July 2024. TSD also delivered a workshop as part of the City Council sponsor “Our City Dances” event in Brighton in July 2024. We took part in the national “Age Without Limits” campaign working with photographer Rosie Powell to create a series of striking images we shared in an exhibition online to challenge perceptions of ageing and celebrate creative ageing. Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Three Score Dance
Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Three Score Dance ('the Company')
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 August 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006
Act').
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records;
or
-
the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
