Structure, Governance and Management

Governing document

The Dan Rhodes Foundation is a charitable incorporated organisation governed by its Constitution dated 15[th] November 2016. It is registered as a charity with the Charity Commission in England and Wales.

Appointment of trustees

The board of trustees currently consists of three members, the original founders; further trustees will be invited as and when required by the charity. The original founders will decide at the Annual General Meeting if new trustees are to be appointed.

Trustee induction and training

New trustees will undergo an induction to brief them on their legal obligations under charity and company law, the content of the Constitution, the decision-making process, the business plan and the recent financial performance of the charity.

Organisation

The trustees administer the charity and meet at least three times a year. Mr Stuart Middleton is appointed as the Custodian Trustee and makes day-to-day decisions necessary for the Charity.

Objectives and activities

The Dan Rhodes Foundation vision and mission

The aim of the Charity is to bring mental health out of the darkness by shining a light on it and raising awareness. As mental illness is hidden it takes people talking about it to bring it out into the open. We also want to promote good mental health through physical health and how having a healthy approach can help your mental health.

The Dan Rhodes Foundation activities

The charity is administered from its head office in Riccall, West Yorkshire.

The charity offers support for people suffering with mental health issues by posting support, articles, blogs, advice and points of contact for those struggling with their mental health and for their loved ones who help and support them. Funds are raised through physical challenges to support the Charity’s social media presence and to support the work of the Blurt Foundation and York Mind.

Main objectives for the period

This is the fifth period of operating, the main objecives were:

Public benefit

We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aim and objectives and in planning our future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set.

Evidence shows that reaching out via social media is a proven method for educating those affected by mental health issues and in reducing stigma associated with the condition. The Charity has had feedback suggesting that our efforts have been useful in reducing the pain and suffering of those suffering with depression and anxiety.

Use of volunteers

Trustees give considerable support to the organisation on a voluntary basis and this is recognised and very much appreciated.

Achievements and Performance

Statutory declaration

The trustees declare that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the commission in exercising their powers or duties.

Summary of the main achievements of the Charity for the period

It has been another difficult year for everyone with the ongoing effects of the pandemic and people struggling around the country.

The lack of events has again had an impact on our fundraising efforts, but we have had good support from the Mathew Good Foundation. It has been another year of slow growth on the social media front as we have struggled to reach more people due to constant changes in the algorithms that push you towards advertising to increase your reach. We have continued to post regularly to provide our followers with posts that try to inform and educate about mental health and also general wellbeing. We have also been providing posts about how you can manage your mental wellbeing and improve your self-care routine.

The program to get people back into fitness to improve their mental wellbeing helped 4 people with personal training but we have struggled to get feedback from them in order to secure further funding from the Mathew Good Foundation. It remains an initiative that we are keen to continue but it may need a rethink on how we can get more engagement.

As the pandemic has eased, fundraising has improved on last year, but we are still reliant on a small number of people to keep things going. Hopefully as things return to normal, we will be able to get more people involved both with fundraising and running the charity.

Financial review

Reserves

At the end of the period the Charity held cash at bank of just over £1,970 all of which was unrestricted funds. These funds are held in order to meet any unforeseen expenditure that may occur. We aim to hold at least £300 and no more than £5,000 in reserves at the year-end. We aim to distribute some of the reserves to Blurt and Mind to continue their good practical work, the amount to be agreed at the annual general meeting of the Trustees.

Funds in deficit

At the end of the period the Charity had no outstanding financial commitments.

Accountant’s report

The Dan Rhodes Foundation was registered on 15[th] November 2016 as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. These are the Financial Statements for year ended 31[st] March 2021.

The Trustees have elected to prepare the accounts under the receipts and payments basis rather than using FRS102.

It is the Trustee’s responsibility to ensure the accounting records represent a true and fair view of the state of the Charity; the Trustees consider that the Charity is exempt from the audit or external verification requirements; and have not requested an audit of the accounting records. Therefore, the accuracy and completeness of the accounting records has not been verified.

The financial statements have been supplied to the Board of Trustees of The Dan Rhodes Foundation, solely for their use and Charity Commission purposes; Accounting Genie does not accept nor assume responsibility to anyone other than the Charity and its Board of Trustees for the work done or for this report.

1 Accounting policies

a) Statement of compliance

The financial statements have been prepared under the receipts and payments basis as gross income is less than £250,000.

The trustees consider that the charity constitutes a public benefit entity.

b) Basis period

The basis period of these financial statements is 1[st] April 2021 until 31[st] March 2022.

c) Going concern

The trustees have considered the current position and budget of the charity, and after making appropriate enquiries they have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus they continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the annual financial statements.

d) Taxation

The charity meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes. Accordingly, the charity is exempt from taxation in accordance with the Corporation Tax Act 2010, to the extent that such income is applied exclusively for charitable purposes.

e) General information
