During 2023 we have continued to battle with low numbers of children, which stems from the ongoing Queensway project. The Queensway project has yet to be started after several years of discussion with the council and the Planning Department. Therefore, the tower blocks are used to place short stay families, which results in short stay children.
On a brighter note we had our Ofsted Inspection in June, and were awarded an ‘Overall effectiveness Good’ This was a brilliant result for our staff, children and families. We appeared in the local paper and hope that this will at some point, result in increased interest from local parents.
During the Summer holidays we had builders make repairs to the garden area, the old sand pit was replaced by a large growing area, a new artificial lawn was installed alongside an area suitable for cycling, these improvements were funded by a grant from Essex Community Grants.
We also purchased a small green house, a large number of grow bags, tools, seeds and bulbs ready for the new term, the children will be encouraged learn about where food comes from as well as get in touch with nature which is so important for their well-being as many of them live in flats which do not have access to an outside space.
The new term began with a member of staff being signed off as long-term sick, this situation continued to the end of the Autumn/Winter term. This has resulted in us having to recruit
another member of staff despite our strained finances, as without an extra person, we are unable to take on more children and increase our revenue.
The increase in the rate of Government funding for two year olds will be a welcome boost, however at the date of writing this, we have not seen the hoped for interest in our setting, we continue to be positive that this situation will change in the near future.
