Chairs Report to the Trustees of Humpty Dumpty Pre-school (Southend) Educational Year 2020/2021 Charity Number 1170151
After discussing the issues arising from receiving notice of resignation from our Deputy Manager we contacted the Early Years team, who offered support. The setting closed for two days while parents were informed and our team reorganised to ensure ratios could be maintained. A senior member of staff took over the Deputy role, and the curriculum planning was allocated to the Management while she trained in her new duties.
Having had time to rest and reassess her situation regarding her concerns over Covid-19 our previous Deputy requested to be reinstated. As a valued member of our team she was welcomed back on lighter duties, building up to her former good practice
During this year all staff completed a variety of training from First Aid to Safeguarding, Zoom meetings are still difficult to arrange during our sessions as the pre-school operates in one large hall.
As other hall users began to book the hall throughout the week, we were faced with new cleaning issues. Whilst we are worked with a Church hall organiser, ensuring the hygiene standards of the hall were maintained was a consent problem, particularly with the more stringent cleaning regime in place due to Covid19, the cost of PPE and sanitising products was a drain on resources, but stood us in good stead for the remainder of the year.
Spring 2021
As we had all the information in place regarding the business grant application from last year we decided to guarantee the security of the setting we would apply for a ' lottery grant'. To our delight we were awarded £9,700.00. This amount was allocated to pay the hall rent and staff wages for several months until we were able to increase the number of children on register.
Over the last few months of the educational year we attracted new children to the setting despite the difficulties in carrying out settling in visits, parents and staff worked tirelessly to ensure that these were carried out safely. It was noticeable that many of the children displayed problems with socializing with their peers. The team researched, discussed and implemented new ways to support the children and encourage them to engage in group activities, and to extend their vocabulary especially children with English as a second language.
As the number of children on register built slowly from eight to twenty we were reassured that we would be able to continue offering our provision for the children in our area. Within the group attending during the summer term, were several with English as an additional language (EAL) and one with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). Therefore, it was necessary to hold regular meetings with their parents, whilst following Government guidance regarding visitors, which was quite a juggle.
Southend on Sea council held a celebration evening at a local hotel to thank all provisions for their continued support for the children during the last eighteen months of Covid-19.
To date we have four members of staff who are vaccinated, three of whom have had their booster. As one member of staff has decided not to be vaccinated we are continuing with Government guidelines regarding regular testing.
The Queensway project is progressing slowly due to Covid-19 restrictions. At least one of four Tower blocks is due to be demolished in 2022, there has been no official guidance to when the work with start. Therefore we will continue working with local children to give them a sound and secure education.
We finished the year in much better shape than we started and indeed, much better shape than we could have imagined we would, we continue to work hard to provide a safe and stimulating space for children to play but with the knowledge that we have the financial resources to weather any future restrictions brought on by the Covid 19 virus and it’s variants.
