NOTTINGHAM TURKISH COMMUNITY 2019-2020 ANNUAL ACTION REPORT 87 LONGMOOR ROAD LONG EATON NG10 4EG

21th February 2021

Following our last General Annual Meeting, we have had another successful year, despite the COVID19 pandemic. I would like to thank you all for being a part of our growing community. In the last year we have enjoyed together, we organised regular trustee meetings to ensure that every step taken and every event we took part in together was decided democratically by our trustees, and from time to time our wider members. NTC Turkish Language and Culture School had a fruitful year with the leadership of our Chairman Ali Topaloglu and Head Teacher Ergin Omac.

Before the first national lockdown on 15[th] March 2020, we offered Turkish classes at the Five Ways Community Centre for our 45 pupils. Additionally; we host an open day on 18th of January 2020 at the Diamond Centre in Kirkby-in Ashfields at the meeting we had answer any queries parents & carers had and started to offer our services to wider community in Mansfield, Alfreton, Kirkby-inAshfield and Ashfield district we have introduce and register new members to our community, had 40 pupils enrolled to lessons given at Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Due to high demand, we have hired classrooms at Diamond Community Centre and started Turkish classes on Sundays with new 40 Students joining NTC Turkish Language and Culture School. Unfortunately, due to Pandemic two months after diamond Centre had to close we had no choice but suspend our face to face services, started online services, as we acted according to government guidance on COVID-19 and implemented all health & safety measures, such as social distancing and wearing face coverings when carrying out activities in person.

Community meetings were carried out online via Zoom for the majority of the year, I believe that the decisions that were made strengthened our togetherness and cohesion, particularly during these difficult times. I would also like to show my appreciation to our trustees and volunteers; Sema Dogduay, Eray Demir, Sevinc Dogan and Ozlem Ulusoy, and our other volunteers who contributed to teaching our pupils. Following a joint decision by the trustee board, we applied for the “Weekend Schools Support Grant Programme”, “Preschool Bilingual Education support programme” opened by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) just before the close of the 2019/20 academic year. Within a few weeks, we received a written reply, stating that our applications for all of the mentioned projects were accepted. Criteria of these programmes were met and a final report has been submitted to the YTB. Furthermore, we applied to 2 new programmes administrated by the YTB for the 2019-2020 educational year, later on in the 2019/2020 academic year; “Çok renkli kimlik bahçesi” for children aged 0-6 years and the “Çok dilli, özgüvenli bireyler için Türkçe” project for pupils that attend Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Both of the projects were authorised and accepted by the YTB in October 2019. We have implemented the projects into the Language and Culture School curriculum and successfully completed these two projects in July 2020. NTC was granted a total of £13,330 from the YTB for these 2 projects.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we couldn`t continue face to face teaching after 15[th] March 2020, this meant that many planned activities had to be cancelled, such as annual competitions organised by the Education Counsellor of the Turkish Embassy to London and also national celebrations organised by the Consulate General to the Republic of Turkey.

In June 2020, we sourced and distributed food aid to help around 100 less fortunate families in the community.

During the past year, we have taken many steps to purchase a suitable building for the community. We arranged several appointments with Nottingham Council and still engaging.

Also, we had an appointment to view/buy a former leisure centre in Huthwaite with Ashfield Council, due to the very high purchasing and maintenance fees we did not go ahead with purchasing this venue. As well as; we also viewed and placed a bid for a former Baptist Church in Arnold, Nottingham. Unfortunately, we have received a reply from the vender to say bidding was not successful. We are still looking for suitable, alternative venues to carry out our activities.

As you know, our charity was founded not only to serve the Turkish community but also members of wider communities. In line with our aim of achieving this goal, this year we built a stronger relationship with the general public by managing a stand at the

On behalf of the trustee board, I have briefly outlined our activities from the beginning of the year as necessary for the 2019-2020 Nottingham Turkish Community General Assembly.

I would like to thank our founder and current trustee members for sacrificing their time to helping us to achieve the point we are at today; I hope that this meeting will be a milestone of further success that we will see together in the future.

Kind Regards,

Ali Topaloglu
