Governance and management

The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted on 29[th] September 2016. Trustees are elected at AGM.

Aims and objectives

Objectives and activities

The objects of the charity are advancement of education, the relief of poverty distress and sickness amongst the members of the African Community in Nottingham and to that end to provide a mechanism for hearing the voice of the African community. The charity enables its members to collate their expert knowledge and evidence about the distinct and unique barriers and inequality experienced by their service users. It then empowers them to present the authentic, collective advocate voice directly t decision makers to inform the development of evidence-based policy and practice with the aim of promoting a meaningful integration of the members of the African community in Nottingham and the UK in general.

Activities

NAC is committed to delivering development, empowerment and advocacy support to its members including local African Refugee Community Organisations, Business, Social Enterprises and similar initiatives. Our members share specific needs arising from their experience of exile and face significant and multiple disadvantages, inequalities and social exclusion. The charity unites its members in collective action to gain greater influence on policy and practice, in the interests of its members. Our work enables members to develop advocacy skills, build and widen networks and engage with the whole range of agencies and local and regional engagement platforms relating to economic inclusion, better health and wellbeing, and safety

within the neighbourhood they live in. By hearing the authentic voiced experience of the community, that reflects what is shared rather than what is personal and individual, policy makers and service providers can improve access routes and deliver support that responds to the specific and additional needs and barriers that this community faces, so that they benefit from those services and opportunities on an equal basis to all local residents.

Our founding aim is for the African organisations to strategically use their collective voice to influence policy and practice that are the systemic causes of the poverty, disadvantage and exclusion they experience in their daily lives.

Overcoming marginalisation and exclusion in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and promoting the ability of the African community to participate in and contribute to the social, cultural and economic wealth of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire on an equal basis, will be in the interest of the whole community.

Volunteers

The charity’s board of directors are all themselves volunteers and dedicate many hours annually to their governance and representational roles. Our collective action is lead by key volunteers from across the membership. Other volunteers offer their specific skills for particular activities. The success of the charity depends on the degree of voluntary participation and contribution of the membership inn the range of activities it organises.

Summary of the main achievements during the period

This financial year has been very quiet in terms of direct support tour members and service users.

Much effort has been spent putting in place the relevant systems and as well as ensuring that all members are clear about the charity’s vision and mission.

The trustees dedicated quality times to discuss the future direction that NAC as an organisation wish to take. The need to update our strategic plan for the way forward for NAC was highlighted. As a result of the above our business plan has been reviewed to reflect the current economic and social changes and funding is being sought to take these plans forward.

However, the dedication to, enthusiasm for and belief in our work by the volunteers and trustees give us hope that we will succeed in our aims and an that we will continue to serve our members who so greatly need and rely on our support.

We are seeking more committee members with real time to commit to helping NAC but also members with various kinds of professional expertise. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who feels they would be in a position to help by joining our board of trustees.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers and our funders, without their generous support we could not continue to help our members so effectively.

Financial review

The charity’s policy on reserves

The trustees consider that given the nature of the charity’s activities, a minimum level of free, unrestricted reserves is represented by a sum equivalent to three months’ operating costs. They have instructed the manager to seek funding for the establishment of a trading arm to help sustain the activities delivered through the charity and build suitable levels of reserves.

Risk analysis

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in particular those related to the operations and finances of the charity, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks. Risks are identified under the four headings suggested by the charity commission: Governance and Management; Operational; Financial; and Operation/ Environment. There is greater clarity around the level of risk, in terms of likelihood and impact, together with measures that have been taken to mitigate risk, further action required, and monitoring progress.

We successfully turned many of our challenge into opportunities: we are changing the way we work and are looking forward to new opportunities that community organising brings to our work. We are empowered by our staff, leaders and members bringing new ideas and energy into our work. We are working hard to ensure we have enough resources to continue with four key areas of our work.

We will strive to continue to work in partnerships with colleagues across different sectors, in order to achieve our aims and objective sand serve our users as well as the public interest.
