In deepest lockdown we kept in touch with our client base with the weekly Zoom quiz a way of uniting the faithful. We were very pleased to reopen part-time at the start of June and full-time from late July. Each of the regular groups restarted and the Trustees were pleased to note that hardly any regulars were missing. With the support of the Tudor Trust we arranged an August bonding canal trip for Trustees and staff which was most enjoyable. Later in the year we were pleased to host Melanie Kelly’s decoration classes which introduced the House to new friends. A theme often discussed amongst the House community was the necessity of making ourselves known to a wider audience and, to this purpose, we recruited RG Marketing to produce a marketing audit. This is an instructive document which shows us where we are and allows us to scope out the future. So the House survives intact and undaunted despite lockdowns of different types. We thank, of course, our House Manager, Pete Mercer, for his loyalty in pressing times and our Administrators Karen Pennington and Alison Raisbeck (new recruit). We can only hope that the House endures for as long as people want to use it. ## **Groups and Activities** The three craft groups have resumed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We thank Joy Szigeti for her work in co-ordinating the groups. Our manager, Pete Mercer, has enticed the Ladies Trefoil (former Guides) and Reading groups to become new regular attendees and we welcome them warmly. Post lockdown, the Philosophy Café, a long-established discussion forum, has made the House its base once again. The Council-led Recovery Group which meets on Friday afternoons has gone from strength to strength on its return and we are very proud of the therapeutic environment created by our Manager, Pete Mercer, which helps so much in the battle for better mental health. Otherwise we thank our customers who pay to hire rooms including our faithful CBT therapist Chris Berry. Contrastingly, Melanie Kelly has used the House as a base for her cake decorating classes and the results have certainly been spectacular. We reopened too late for the Summer Barbecue but our House Manager, Pete Mercer, organised the very popular Christmas buffets and raffles. ## **Supporters** The House Trustees would like to thank our magnificent staff. Pete Mercer has worked tirelessly, creating our beautiful garden but more generally cultivating the atmosphere of serenity which permeates the House. We thank Karen Pennington for her administration work in trying circumstances, not least for her work on the furlough scheme and securing local authority grants. A trustee who deserves special credit is Rebecca Elliott who announced in 2021 that she would be standing down. Since the charity’s beginning Rebecca has made every single online payment and reconciled our payments at the end of each week. She has of course in return received £0. She really is an example of someone who has made a sparkling selfless contribution. We thank Ryan Mercer for overhauling our website. Our thanks to Blackpool Council for their substantial recovery grants on which we are still relying. We also took full advantage of the Government’s furlough scheme to retain our treasured staff throughout the months and years in which we were closed. Readers will recall that the 2021 “Afternoons to Remember” scheme, financed by the National Lottery, was curtailed while in its early stages. The scheme focussed on providing a therapeutic environment in which dementia sufferers would receive support to rekindle their memories. While Covid restrictions meant the scheme was unable to resume the Lottery money allowed us to make further improvements to the House which will make dementia sufferers more comfortable. Dementia-friendly games have been purchased which we hope to use when the time is right. Our thanks to Pete Mercer for securing our status as one of the Coop’s Community Causes from February 2022.
