Child Redress International Report of the Trustees for the year ended 31 March 2021

Structure, governance and management

Governing document

Child Redress International (hereinafter “Child Redress”) is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission in April 2016 under charity number 1170039. It is governed by a Constitution last updated January 9, 2019.

Organisational structure

The charity trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no renumeration or other financial benefits.

As a newly constituted charity, Child Redress is currently in a start-up phase, and does not have any paid staff. Due to the transnational legal nature of Child Redress International’s work, the trustees are all legal experts, expect for one who is a UK registered accountant. The trustees are based in the UK, Canada and the United States. For this reason board meetings are convened as and when necessary and are chaired by the chair of trustees. Minutes are taken by the secretary of trustees.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

All of the trustees appointed at the time of Child Redress’ constitution were appointed for a term of 4 years, until April 2020. The board agreed to extend the appointment of the trustees because of Covid-19. All subsequent trustees will be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. The only persons eligible to members of the CIO are its charity trustees.

Plans for Future Periods

In December 2021 CRI met with Leiden University who run one of the most well regarded international child rights law programs in the world, and agreed to carry out a joint research study in 2022. The study will include law students from Leiden University who will update research carried out by CRI in 2014 into procedural laws in different countries related to claiming compensation for child victims of sexual exploitation and abuse. We hope to produce a publication including this updated research by the end of 2022.

On 18 May 2018 CRI received Core Participant status by the Independent Inquiry into Child and Sexual Abuse, to take part in the Children Outside the UK case study. The landmark inquiry examined the extent to which institutions and organisations based in England and Wales have met their responsibilities to protect children outside the United Kingdom from sexual abuse, following serious allegations of abuse by individuals working for British

organisations and institutions abroad. CRI instructed Simpson Millar solicitors as its legal representatives. The Inquiry handed down its final report on 9 January 2020.[1]
