Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The charity continued supporting members of the community focussing on members who arrived as refuges from Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran.

Like many other small charities, OKA was heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. OKA saw its largest community event cancelled in March 2020, and the regular meetings were postponed due to the lockdown.

The community in Oxford are not well connected online, so as an organisation we struggled to gather people at online meetings and events. All trustees had to take time out to adjust mentally and sort our personal and professional issues which appeared because of the national lockdown. Like many small charities, OKA’s normal operations stalled, and the charity had to focus on individual targeted help and one-to-one support for families.

Help included teaching people new IT skills and organising online meetings, supporting people in getting access to food banks and support from the local council.

In May 2020 OKA organised meals for the local hospital to be prepared by members of the local community. It is charity’s ethos to always employ members of local community and of refugee background. In this case some café owners volunteers and prepared 60 lunches for the NHS staff.

We also provided some individual support to refugees in need, including financial (paying for temporary accommodation) and through admin and advice on how to interact with the city council.

When lockdowns eased and sports activities were allowed to take place, we continued our long-standing commitment to supporting community football team.

Another Covid-19 activity was to employ a local tailor to make face masks for distribution in the community. This was done in the very early stages of the lockdown, and the masks were made with the pattern of the Kurdish flag, thus promoting community engagement and buy-in into the necessity to wear face masks at all times.

Overall there were no face-to-face activities during that period.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of our trustee, Essam Eldin Mohammed Ali Awny (1934-2021) on 29[th] April 2021. Essam was a highly respected elder of the Oxford Kurdish community. He was a great advocate and mobiliser throughout his life, and collected invaluable historic artefacts connected with the Kurdish history. An engineer by profession, he was an adventurer (exploring Egypt’s desert and coast with his family), a problem-solver and an advocate for so many people. Kurdish community in Oxford owes a great deal to his experience, kindness and wisdom.
