For example, in the past year. presentations have been given to new groups to raise awareness of the plight of the elderty in Uganda, to infomi people of the work of ROTOM and to encourage new supporters. Regular nevtsletters were sent to supporters regarding the work in Uganda and special projects such as latrine renovation, house repairs. and food supplementation and distribution. We have continued to help fund a full-time field nurs8 to work in the communty. Regular correspondence was made between indtvidual supporters in the UK and the elderly Ugandans that they support. Despite the ntinued effects of to the pandemic and financial pressures l am pleased to say that we have been able to continue our support of 41 seniors and their dependants. We continue to target the issue of dean water. Most of our seniors now have a large rainwater Gollection tank alongside their home. They no longer need to walk to the muddy water holesl We have seen a deep well installed in the village which will benefit the whole communty. TAR arch 2012
Governance No travel to Uganda was possible again this year due to an Ebola outbreak. Zoom meetings were held with the Ugandan staff as well as email updates. Development of friendships between sponsors and their seniors was encouraged through exchanging letters and photos. The bi-weekly fellowship gatherings that the seniors enjoy so much have been reinstated. Wrth the help of village volunteers seniors were visited regularfy in their homes. 21 Medical care and athiice The role of the field nurse has been vrtal during the pandemic, though we thank God that the expected spread of COVID into the small rural communities did not owr. Willage volunteers were trained to do basic monitoring and care under the nurse's supeNision. The field nurses supervised the administrats'on of medi¢ation and liaised closely wrth medical staff in ROTOM Uganda's heatth centre. They spent many hours teaching seniors about infection spread and the need for social distancing and hand washing. AII ROTOM seniors have been offered Iwo COVID vaccines and by and large most have accepted this offer. Other members of the community were also given vaccine. Health promotion Work has continued alongside the regular screening and medical care of all our registered seniors. V7T 3) Promote independence Independence is encouraged wherever FK)ssible by supporting their existing food production efforts and boosting these with other income generating projects, primarily small livestock. However, some particulady frail seniors needed more care and Wre supplied with supplementary food when they required it. A second very frail sènior was moved to a Village Outreach care facility in another area for rnore intense support 4) Housing and living condltions A programme of house repair and renovation continues as funds allow. The personal comfort of our supported seniors is also addressed whenever possible by the provision of such things as mattresses, mosquito nets, bedding. and clothing. Al of our seniors now have good bedding and most have new bed frames. TAR March 2012
