**Objectives & Activities**
The object of Say Aphasia is the relief of persons with aphasia and associated acquired communication difficulties after a stroke, head injury or brain tumour and their families and carers by the provision of such charitable support as the trustees think fit, including the provision of therapy, support and information.
Say Aphasia helps people with aphasia adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence. Say Aphasia provide drop-in groups where people with aphasia can get together to regain purpose and confidence. In addition, our weekly online group reaches members who are housebound and so further isolated by their aphasia.
All our groups are run by people with aphasia plus support volunteers and we have developed an aphasia friendly online induction training for all volunteers.
Drop in groups are located in Abergavenny, Barry, Bournemouth, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Darlington, Eastbourne, Exeter, Hove, Selsey, Skipton, Winchester & Southampton, Woodingdean and Worthing.
Say Aphasia also have associations with groups in Sheffield and Leeds as well as affiliation with the Stroke Association and Aphasia Alliance.
Say Aphasia makes a difference to people living with aphasia by:
- Offering Drop In Groups for support and friendship
- Helping to adjust to living with aphasia.
- Meeting like-minded people who are experiencing a similar life change.
- Gaining tips and advice from others with aphasia.
- Gaining confidence to socialise and communicate as best they can.
- Re-gaining independence as much as they can.
- Helping to reduce loneliness.
- Providing support in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
- Offering art and singing activities as a therapeutic way to relax and express themselves.
## **Achievements & Performance**
Say Aphasia celebrated their 7th anniversary during this year.
Donations have contributed to most funds this year. Events such as Brighton Half Marathon, London Marathon, Sea Aphasia, Desert Trek and the Trafalgar Square to Portsmouth Hospital walk have been a great success raising funds and awareness of aphasia.
Say Aphasia has added 3 new Drop In groups set up this year to support people with aphasia and their families to live well with aphasia. Our trustees have introduced a full range of aphasia friendly policies and systems to improve our governance and accountability. Our new aphasia friendly induction for our volunteers have improved our offering of services across England and Wales.
Awareness events including TV interviews, MP visits, involvement in Aphasia Research, stands at festivals and conferences have all helped to raise the public profile of this little know communication difficulty.
The trustees declare that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the commission in exercising their powers or duties.

## **Independent examiner’s report to the Trustees of Say Aphasia (Charitable Incorporated Organisationnumber 1169933)**
I report on the accounts of Say Aphasia for the year ended 28 September 2023, which are set out on pages 1 to 2 of the Receipts and Payments accounts.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and the seeking of explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirement:
- To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
- To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been meet; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
