Bike to the Future Chairmans report 2025
2025 has been quieter for BttF in terms of sales, but we now have a small team of committed volunteers who are keen to ensure the continuation of service after Tom's retirement.
The year began by acquiring a set of e-bikes from Open Newtown. These were originally part of the very popular Sustrans e-move project which operated in a few Welsh towns- the scheme was extended to Newtown, but the bikes had been languishing at Hafan yr Afon for some time, so we approached them and agreed a deal whereby we would take ownership with the intention of renting them out for a few months at a time. The outcome has been mixed: one was stolen, and one has not been returned! However it provides jobseekers / newly employed people with a low cost way of commenting and we collaborate with the job centre to this end.
Joe, Alex and Roy have become regular volunteers at the workshop, with an interest in its success. Discussions around Tom’s retirement and what happens to BttF have become more intense, with Tom looking at retirement at the end of 2026 and volunteers taking over its delivery. Some issues need resolving, particularly around asset ownership, the organisational model and how this transfer may take place.
Recently our income has been much lower - around half the Covid era boom. This reflects fewer and lower grant applications and less retail activity. Costs are about the same. Tom has made a point of using reserves with a view to BttF winding up, however the interest by volunteers in taking it on has affected this plan and we now have to decide on what route can be used to make this happen. Financially we are not sustainable as costs exceed income, however there seems to be a desire to at least maintain the workshop for the future.
Low sales are being addressed by creating a marketing strategy. Stan from Shrewsbury college will hopefully be helping with this over the next few months.
In August we had a burglary and four bikes were stolen, there has been no satisfactory outcome however we were able to claim insurance for our loss and damage.
Recently we have been operating with too few Trustees, hence the first item is appointing a new Trustee which will ensure the continuation of BttF for the future.
