## **Objectives and activities**
## **The charity's objects**
1. To promote, protect and improve the health of childbearing and pregnant asylum seekers and refugees by (A) contributing to the training and awareness of midwives, nurses, health workers, social workers and lecturers. (B) improving communication between health workers and childbearing and pregnant asylum seekers and refugees or vice versa. (C) contributing to improvements in maternity services in order to make them more welcoming and inclusive for pregnant asylum seekers and refugees.
2. To promote culturally sensitive ante and post natal information and support for asylum seekers and refugees.
3. To preserve and protect the health of childbearing and pregnant asylum seekers and refugees by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities and support services not normally provided by the statutory authorities.
## **The charity's main activities**
Raising awareness through attendance and talks at conferences and events, as well as delivering awareness raising sessions to a range of audiences about the experiences of asylum seeking women, particularly around maternity care.
Encouraging cohesion in provision of maternity services for asylum seeking and refugee women through organising multi-disciplinary meetings and supporting asylum seeking and refugee women to share their stories, as well as involvement in research projects and attendance at meetings and Liaison Committees. Confidence building and enabling volunteers through training and workshops.
Developing and sharing resources including exhibitions, awareness raising films, learning resources, leaflets and social media.
Raising awareness about accessing health and maternity services for migrant women.
## **Public benefit statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular the advancement of education, the advancement of health or the saving of lives, the advancement of human rights and the promotion of religious or racial harmony / equality and diversity.
## **Achievements and performance**
## **Urban House**
The Senior Project Manager regularly attended Urban House to support pregnant women and new mums. This included a total of 38 attendances, 32 of which attended at least 4 sessions before being dispersed (14 pregnant) and 38 attended a one off. The “Wellbeing sessions” covered a large range of activities from crafts to awareness of maternity and health services. The sessions have been led by the Wakefield befrienders who have supported us to connect with pregnant women and keeping regular communication regarding women`s needs for support.
## **Zoom meetings**
Weekly sessions have seen regular embedding a co-production approach to each session, women have been taking initiative proposing topics and actively participating with guests' speakers, enjoying priority on social activities and opportunities in research, as well as supporting each other and celebrating special and traditional occasions. A total of 34 session have been delivered during the last 12 months with 11 women attending regularly and 6 on/off, a special feature of the session has been the “Monthly Me session” where women can focus on themselves sharing their dreams, hopes and feelings separating from their roles as mothers. After a consultation within the group, we aim to start face-to-face peer support at least once a month.

## **Achievements and performance continued**
## **We delivered “Finding your voice” training**
Training sessions for 16 women from different backgrounds, culture and abilities. This training supports women to speak in public, including trauma-aware techniques to reflect of their experiences, validate their feelings, learning to express them in a safe space, put them in writing and sharing with others. The level of confidence for most of the participants previous to the training was very low. During the last session the women’s learning journey was celebrated by a presentation about a topic meaningful for them in front of their peers and guests and receiving their certificate of participation. At the end of the training women were given the option of officially become volunteers and use the skills they learnt to raise awareness of different topics.
## **Awareness raising sessions**
Sessions were planned and delivered at Leeds and York University for Midwifery students tailored to the needs identified by the tutor. All sessions included an overview of the Asylum process, access to health and maternity services, barriers and good practice in a mixture using resources such as slides, expert by experience presentation and an interactive role-playing scenario. These sessions reached a total of 82 students.
## **Research**
We connected 36 women to attend 7 research sessions including 17 nationalities and 9 languages. There were also 2 research consultancy involving 20 women.
## **Trips**
Two trips took place including a summer day out with 15 women and a residential for 29 people. Participants also joined us at the Deer Shed festival where we had a stall.
## **Household Support Grants**
During the last 12 months with the support of Volition Grant we have been able to support families with 170 supermarket vouchers and 65 payments of £30 towards gas, electricity or water bills.
## **Financial review**
The net receipts for the year were £1,224, including net receipts of £7,137 on unrestricted funds and net payments of £5,913 on restricted funds.
## **Reserves policy**
The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £8,049.
The minimum level of reserves to be held by the charity is £1,000 for basic operating costs and 1 months Project Manager payment, for winding down in case funding for this role comes to an end without continuation funding in place. The maximum level of reserves to be held by the charity is £2,000. Any unrestricted funds over this level must be designated.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31 March 2025, which are set out on pages 6 to 10.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the CIO's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act; 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
There has been no change to the accounting policies since last year.
No changes have been made to the accounts for previous years.
## **Taxation**
As a charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor or through the terms of an appeal.

## Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Yorkshire and Humberside Maternity Stream of the City of Sanctuary CIO
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 31 March 2025, which are set out on pages 6 to 10.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the CIO's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act; 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
