The trustees present their report and the financial statements of Durham Music Trust for the year ended 31 August 2022.
## **DURHAM MUSIC TRUST**
Durham Music Trust was founded in October 2016. Its purpose is to support the charitable aims of Durham Music Service (DMS) by raising philanthropic funds and other sources of grants / external funding, working in close association with the management and staff of Durham Music Service. The Trust will distribute the funds with a view to improving the quality and scope of music activities for young people across County Durham and Darlington.
Durham Music Service are one of the biggest Music Education Hubs in the country providing high quality and inclusive musical opportunities for over 18,000 pupils year, from over 300 schools across County Durham and Darlington. We have many music groups catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to advanced including a range of orchestras, choirs, wind and brass bands as well as percussion, strings and special school ensembles.
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
The objectives of the Durham Music Trust CIO are to support Durham Music Service with capital and revenue funds to:
- Support young people in their musical endeavors through a range of education programmes
- Support DMS staff with opportunities to enhance their skills and create new programmes
- Support the activities of DMS and in to create exciting opportunities for special events and musical performances
- Offer customised music programmes for pupils with special needs
- Create opportunities for more able and very talented pupils to participate in master classes
- Purchase instruments to loan to pupils
- Allow financially disadvantaged pupils to cover music fees and travel costs
- Enhance the services provided by DMS
## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**
The last 12 months have continued to be a challenge for Durham Music Service following the pandemic and we have been working to stablise our business and build our pupil numbers back to pre-pandemic levels. As this has been our focus to ensure long term stability for Durham Music Serviced this has impacted the work of Durham Music Trust from a capacity point of view.
Durham Music Trust has continued to raise funds via our website, social media platforms and through local donors for our bursary appeal. We have continued to offer our bursary to families financially impacted by the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis to ensure their child’s music tuition has remained consistent throughout. Applications continue to be submitted termly and this will continue until the end of the 2022/23 academic year, when the board then considers what this will look like moving forward and set an annual bursary application process in place. To date we have awarded 56 bursaries to the value of £4,459.17.
We have also continued to receive low level donations via our ‘donate button’ available across all areas of our website and we have continued to grow our ‘Friends of Durham Music’ programmes and have supporters regularly supporting our work by donating on a monthly and annual basis.
In addition, we have other low-level donations coming in via Paypal Giving, The Charities Trust, DONR text giving and Amazon Smiles. We are also registered for gift aid and claim this on all applicable donations.
In December 2021, we held a Durham Music Christmas ‘Big Give’ which was our first fundraising campaign. The Roger Kelly Foundation agreed to match fund this, if we achieved at least £1500 in donations and the total raised including the match funding was £3,226.36.
In February 2022 with grant funding support of £18,630.82 from Durham County Council, Covid Control Outbreak Management Fund we were able to go ahead with Durham Vocal Festival 2022.
In June 2022 we held our first Durham Music Service – Alumni, Friends and Supporters Event. This brought together current supporters and friends of Durham Music Service, as well as past pupils. This was a chance of everyone to take part in a scratch orchestra and choir with an informal performance with the current DMS Orchestra in the evening.
Durham Music will continue with our business stabilisation and our commitment to growing our business once again and Durham Music Trust will play a key part in what that success looks like.

## _**Trustees**_
## **Will Todd – Chair of Durham Music Trust - Composer, Presenter, Conductor**
Will Todd was born and brought up in the City of Durham and has retained professional connections with the region throughout his career, working with Durham Youth Choir, Durham Choral Society, Orchestra North East, The Durham Singers, Voices of Hope, The Sage Gateshead, Sunderland University, Newcastle Bach Choir, Newcastle Choral Society and many other schools and ensembles. His compositions encompass choral works large and small, opera, musical theatre and orchestral pieces, as well as jazz compositions and chamber works. His anthem, The Call of Wisdom, was performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations with a TV audience of 45 million people. His breakthrough work, Mass in Blue has been performed hundreds of times all over the world. His arrangement of Amazing Grace was performed at President Obama’s Inauguration Day prayer service in 2013 and as part of the BBC’s Nelson Mandela Thanksgiving Service. He has collaborated with award winning choirs The Sixteen and Tenebrae, as well as with the BBC Singers, BBC Concert Orchestra, The Halle Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra Opera Holland Park Welsh National Opera The Bach Choir St Martin’s
## **Jennie Cashman Wilson – Founder and CEO of the Abram Wilson Foundation**
Since 2006 Jennie has been based in London working with professional performing artists and educators specialising in a range of genres at nationally and internationally recognised venues across the UK. Jennie began working with the critically acclaimed award-winning jazz musician, Abram Wilson in 2009 and eventually took on the role of his manager and booking agent in 2011. After Abram passed away in 2012 Jennie established the Abram Wilson Foundation for Creative Arts and is inspired by something Abram said, “Though life is hard I come from a history of greatness, so I will be great”. The Abram Wilson Foundation aims to help young people become the greatest version of themselves through music. Between 2012 – 2017 it reached over 3 000 disadvantaged young people and worked with nearly 60 performing artists
## **Graeme Danby – Professor of Music and Freelance Opera Singer**
The world famous English bass, Graeme Danby born in Consett, County Durham was educated at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Graeme has performed at several of the world's leading opera houses, notably the Royal Opera House, La Scala, Covent Garden and the English National Opera. He is known for his strong, dramatic portrayals of characters in the basso profondo repertoire. Graeme appears regularly on the concert platform throughout the UK at prestigious venues and broadcasts regularly for the British Broadcasting Corporation. Graeme is Professor of Music at University of Cumbria and feels passionately that music and the performing arts have a wonderful way of making people feel good.
## **Wendy Thompson – Parent Supporter**
I have been a keen supporter of the Durham Music Service since 2010 when my daughter took her first flute lessons. As she, and then her sister progressed with their lessons and began to attend the District, Regional and then County Big Band and Orchestra I became more involved as a parent supporter, watching the concerts, making teas, organising raffles etc. The opportunity to become a Trustee came up and I saw an opportunity to try and encourage other parents and carers, any of whom are also great supporters of the Service to help out and support where possible. I have also recently taken up the opportunity for adult lessons through DMS and am currently learning the saxophone with my aim being to get a Grade 1.
In my professional life, I have been many things – I have run my own chocolate business, a school secretary and am now a Senior Planning officer at the Yorkshire Dales National Park a job which takes me out and about in some of the most stunning scenery in the country. I have two daughters, one of whom is studying at the Leeds Conservatoire, furthering the love of music she has gained through the
## **Mark Anyan - General Manager of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain**
Mark combines his role as General Manager of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB) with a busy schedule as a freelance musician as conductor, workshop leader, adjudicator, and singer, making regular appearances as a tenor with choral societies and vocal ensembles throughout the North of England. He began his long association with NYCGB as a member before becoming a section leader, soloist, and member of the National Youth Chamber Choir.
Alongside his work with adult choirs (currently Musical Director of Newcastle Choral Society), Mark is a passionate advocate for music education and creating and supporting music opportunities for young people. He spent 10 years as a singing teacher (Cheshire Music Service and Durham County Music Service), was involved in the choral programme at Sage Gateshead where he held posts as Musical Director of the Quay Lasses and Quay Voices, was Musical Director for Huddersfield Choral Society Youth Choir and co-founding Musical Director of Durham Cathedral Young Singers
