ma ma mutual assistance - mutual advantage ANNUAL REPORT 2023/ iii ## ABOUT MANGOMA maNGOma (mutual assistance for NGOs for mutual advantage) is a UK-based organisation that supports the development of community groups and NGOs both in the UK and internationally. Our work focuses on addressing the challenges posed by climate change, ecological breakdown, poverty, access to education, health provision, population displacement, and regional conflict. We partner with small grassroots NGOs, helping to bring their projects to life by applying to funders in collaboration with them. Within the UK, we work with vulnerable groups to improve their prospects. Our role includes preparing project proposals and seeking grants in partnership with these organisations, to help secure funding for our activities. Our Board remains diverse, encompassing a wide range of skills, including community project management, international development, and charity business development. Much of our volunteer recruitment is through the University of East Anglia (UEA). All volunteers work from home, including some who are based overseas. ## **FIGURE 1.** _MaNGOma partner HAGMA provides healthcare, education and community development in Uganda._ ## ACTIVITIES REPORT ## New Initiatives ## The maNGOma newsletter This year, we launched the maNGOma newsletter as part of our ongoing communication and outreach efforts to better engage our partners, volunteers, and donors. The newsletter features current international development issues and highlights our projects, achievements and ongoing efforts. ## Kenya Poverty Action We initiated work – including recruiting Trustees - and have established Kenya Poverty Action, a UK-based charity aimed at supporting poverty reduction initiatives in Kenya. Our rationale was that this would support our Kenyan based partners and NGOs by giving them a direct presence in the UK, to increase awareness and fundraising in the UK prospects to meet a great need. ## Refugee Project We finalised our Refugee Project, which received widespread praise for its innovative approach. For the first time, asylum seekers and refugees were connected to volunteering opportunities in Norwich, allowing them to improve their skills, including English proficiency, build self-confidence, and enhance community integration. Notably, two asylum seekers based in Norwich were recruited to research and draft funding applications for one of our partner NGOs, showcasing their skills, hard work and dedication. ## **FIGURE 2.** _Mushroom growing by maNGOma partner ZimConserve in Zimbabwe._ ## Work with local organisations ## University of East Anglia (UEA) – School of Global Development At UEA we have delivered fundraising training to students since maNGOma’s inception. This year we delivered a two-day international development training session on the issue of fundraising and strategic development. One of maNGOma’s volunteers, an asylum seeker, attended a session and presented a project. ## Environmental Film Festival We successfully organised an Environmental Film Festival around international development issues in collaboration with local environmental groups. Held at local Picturehouse Cinema, Cinema City in Norwich, the event featured films focused on climate change and its impact on communities globally and locally. This initiative was well-received and helped raise awareness around these critical issues. We are grateful to the Lush Foundation for funding support towards the costs of this festival. ## Future projects Looking ahead, we aim to strengthen our partnerships and consider ways in which we might increase our capacity to support our fundraising and business development work for NGOs. Alongside this we will continue to work with partners in the UK on international development, climate change and sustainability issues for global benefit. ## **FIGURE 3.** _MaNGOma partner Camaay provide opportunities for young people in Cameroon._ ## FUNDRAISING AND DEVELOPMENT Our volunteers worked diligently on funding applications for a variety of projects run by the following NGOs: CAMAAY: focusing on projects such as virtual health clinics, educational supplies for displaced children, and sustainable agriculture for this NGO in Cameroon. - Health and Water Foundation: developing projects supporting youth entrepreneurship and improved sanitation in primary schools in Kenya. - ZimConserve: working on a proposal for mushroom farming to promote sustainable agriculture and alleviate climate change-induced poverty in Zimbabwe. - HAGMA: working on improving maternal health and sanitation in Uganda, with a focus on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. - SISCODE: helping girls and women to developing IT and coding skills in Ghana.
