Minutes of the Meeting held to elect the Churchwardens
&
Minutes of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting held on Wednesday 1[st] May 2024 at 7pm
Present: There were 29 Church members present, including the Priest–in–Charge Anne Wilkins, Curate Sam Dennis, Readers Paul Cavill and Chris Wilkins and Abi Parker, PCC Secretary, taking minutes.
The Rev. Anne Wilkins read from John 15: 1-8 and said this was about abiding, remaining in Jesus, staying the course. Being joined to Jesus will help us to bear much fruit. She said we look back and give thanks for what we have achieved in the Parish in the past year and now look forward to this year; we need to remain in Jesus and expect a big harvest. She then opened the meeting with prayer.

THE MEETING HELD TO ELECT THE CHURCHWARDENS
The nominations for this year are:
- i Joan Suiter, proposed by Betty Thompson and seconded by Joy Binding Pauline Porter, proposed by Betty Thompson and seconded by June Oliver
A large majority of those at the meeting agreed Joan could stand for a final, seventh year as Warden, to aid continuity and help Pauline and Anne find their feet at Sawley. The meeting unanimously voted for Joan and Pauline to serve as Churchwardens this year. Anne extended heartfelt thanks to them, they are a real asset and very supportive to her, in their role.

Minutes of APCM held on 26[th] April 2023
- There is to be a redaction regarding our affiliation with AWM, as requested by a church member. Once Abi has made this adjustment the minutes will be approved as accurate. They were therefore proposed for acceptance by Mary Phipps, seconded by Pat Hassall and approved by those present.

3 Electoral roll
The Electoral Roll was prepared by Peter Rankin and the figures brought to the meeting by secretary Abi Parker. Total on electoral roll: 120

4 Reports
Anne said the booklet of reports prepared in advance of the meeting was full of fruitfulness, we were evidently very productive even during the Vacancy of 2022-2023. Anne said thank you to those who had written these reports.
- 5 Presentation of the accounts
It was noted that we had been doing ok financially, but could always do better?! Mary Holland, our long-standing Treasurer said we had actually done pretty well especially considering the Interregnum which can always be a difficult period. Mary is now resigning as Treasurer. Anne said Mary had obviously been really knowledgeable, helpful, efficient and clear in this role and a big thank you to her.
- 6 Appointments: Independent Examiner . This year’s accounts were audited by Brian Parker, who is an Ex-Accountant, member of St. John’s Church Long Eaton, Lay Chair of the Deanery and on the Bishop’s Council. He is happy to fulfil this again next year and was proposed by Pat Hassall, seconded by Kristin Simmons and accepted as our Independent Examiner again for 2024.
Colin Heap reviews St Mary’s accounts for us. We were pleased to appoint him as this Independent Examiner again for 2024, proposed by Pauline Porter and seconded by Mike Else. These two are not paid but given a token of our appreciation (Brian requests £100 donation to Canaan Trust and Colin is given some chocolates).
7 Annual Fabric Report
Information regarding works undertaken for our Buildings was recorded in the Buildings team and Churchwarden’s reports in our booklet. This year the Faculty system has changed and everything we do to our church owned buildings now needs a faculty. Some of this is just an online version of the logbook ie we have to record works undertaken such as replacement locks, carpets etc. It is important the Buildings team and Wardens know about any works needed or undertaken so it can be logged. The existing logbook is not all up to date (on paper), when it is Anne will sign it. The terrier was also mentioned – this is the inventory of all the land, valuable and removable items we own as a church. June Oliver asked about solar panels, which we have been hoping to organise on the Church Hall roof for quite some time. These will now need a faculty, it may be easier to actually get them on the church itself than the hall. It is certainly something we are keen to do as we aim to attain net zero and PCC will continue to look into this.

8 and 9 Election to the PCC and Deanery Synod
Our PCC numbers are quite robust but we do need to ensure we have enough lay representatives, elected by the congregation. Coming off PCC this time are Lynda Marlowe, Ian Johns, Keith Scales and Mary Phipps. The following nominations were made to join the council:

Anne pointed out that Lay Readers are not necessarily on PCC but asked if we are happy for our 3 Readers – Paul, Chris and Rosie – to be part of PCC. All agreed yes. All nominees were unanimously accepted for their posts. This means we now have a council of 18 including 9 elected lay members plus 2 Wardens, as well as representatives of Deanery, Diocesan and General Synod, plus our Lay Chair, Readers and Clergy. Our Safeguarding officer and Treasurer will be co-opted.
10 Chairman’s remarks
Anne said a huge thanks should be given to Joan and Kathryn for their efforts as Churchwardens during the Vacancy and as Anne has taken up the post. Thanks also to Pauline for agreeing to take on this role this year. Anne said it was poignant chairing the APCM tonight because last year it was whilst we were having our meeting that she received the call from Karen offering her the position at Sawley. Thanks and well done to Sam who has been working so hard, sometimes it has been difficult that people haven’t understood that she isn’t employed by our church, she has effectively had two jobs. She has done an amazing job for our congregation because Anne realises she has come to a congregation not worn out but who love Jesus and who are full of energy, devotion, and committed to worship and growth. It’s a privilege and a joy to be here.
Anne had written a thorough report for the APCM booklet about her first impressions and the connections she had so far made in the Parish but she highlighted to us that she has five objectives.

1) Growing Faith – build on the existing work with children, young people and families.

2) Build and train the Pastoral Team.

3) Look at addressing the needs and areas of deprivation in the Parish.

4) Develop outreach through manna food boxes
-
5) Enable people to deepen their faith with quiet days / courses etc.
Some things have already started – prayer breakfasts, services at Long Eaton view (residential home), Youth Alpha and fellowship between our Leaders.
Anne said may we all have faith and step out into this year to bear fruit, both in our own lives and in growing new Christians in our community.

Church Wardens Annual Report for January to December 2024
2024 has been a year when we have all been challenged with hope for growth at All Saints and St Mary’s. The Churchwardens would like to thank all those who have taken up the challenge, with volunteers and team effort to keep the Churches running smoothly.
We can assure you that our Churches take its responsibilities towards the Diocese and the local community seriously.
Our Buildings at All Saints’ and St Mary’s are well maintained with work been carried out on a regular basis, as you can imagine with our church been a grade 1 listed building it takes a lot of hard work by our Buildings Team. Thanks, have been sent to the Stone Mason who repaired the Church roof. Thank you to the Buildings Team for organising the Fire Safety survey in both churches and the church hall, we hope to complete the work in 2025.
The Churchwardens are pleased to report that our Church buildings continue to be well used by all the community. Thank you to Angela who keeps our Church Hall events running smoothly. We thank all the leaders and volunteers who help to run the various activities including

Little Saints for pre-school children at All Saints’ church hall.

Youth café for young people at St Mary’s on a Tuesday evening.

Youth Saints : A Christian fellowship group at St Mary’s on a Sunday evening.

We have opened our churches to the local schools - Sawley Infants and Dovedale for Real Easter and Real Christmas, along with Sawley Juniors for their Harvest and Christmas special services which took place in our church, and we hope to welcome them again in 2025.

It is good that we can go into the schools as well, to share ‘Open the Book’ assemblies. Thank you to our volunteers who make this happen.
Development within the area of children and young people is a priority for everyone who is attached to our Church and we look forward to it growing in the future.
We continue to support our Food on Friends Warm Spaces initiative on Friday mornings at St Mary’s where food, warmth and friendship are shared. We continue to support the Food Bank now housed at the Baptist Church in Long Eaton as well as in Sawley, also the Manna Food Boxes along with our giving to Cannan Trust which is based in Long Eaton.
We also host the Wellbeing Café on a Tuesday afternoon and Singing for the Brain on Friday mornings. We thank Janet and her dedicated team of helpers for all the hard work in providing these activities.
We are very grateful to Angela our Parish Administrator, for preparing our weekly news sheet, to keep us up to date with what is happening the following week in our churches, as well as doing all the printing we need for the services and managing the bookings for the Church Hall and St Mary’s.

We thank Anne our Priest in Charge, Sam our Curate, Paul and Chris our Readers for all their hard work in leading worship at our Churches, along with all who have helped with the music that is played and sung, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and the singing at the carol service in December.
It was good to go to the service in Derby Cathedral in April, to welcome Christopher Wilkins as a Reader for our Parish. On the 13[th] November 2024, 12 of our congregation were confirmed into the Church of England by the Bishop of Derby, Bishop Libby, and our Church family supplied refreshments after the service. Both these services were very uplifting.
It was good that we were able to welcome the community and our local uniformed organisations to our Annual Remembrance Service in November and also host the Remembering Service for All Souls’ day, everyone who came to this service was very touched with the love and fellowship and hospitality they experienced. We also hosted the Scouts Carol Service in December and everyone enjoyed singing along with the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band.
A reminder that there is a dedicated email for the Sawley Parish Churchwardens, this email will remain constant when the Churchwardens are replaced. Passwords to access the email are changed as required, in order to keep the email secure.

Buildings team
Health and safety issues have been a major concern this year, we have been working hard to in ensure we meet all the requirements. We have been most fortunate that a qualified person has instructed and guided us with all the work that needs addressing. This has very kindly been done free of charge, so a big thank you to this gentleman.
Areas of work identified are :

Moving of the Fire alarm box in the Church Hall, to comply with fire regulations.

Two outside lights required above the fire doors in the hall.
-
Purchasing of a new fire extinguisher for St Marys.
-
Smoke alarm in the hall kitchen.
-
Accident and incident reporting books in all three buildings.
Once all work has been completed, we will be awarded a Fire Safety
Management Plan.
This is a legal requitement and the certificate will be displayed in all three buildings.
We have been most fortunate in that we have been guided by a qualified person for the report writhing and to point out all items that need addressing. We arranged a visit from the fire service as we are aware that in the event of a fire at All Saints / Hall, a fire engine would not get up the drive. The fire officer assured me that they would get the hoses up if required and after a look around the buildings affirmed that we were doing all that we can in respect of fire regulations.

We are currently undertaking the Faculty process for replacing all the lights in All Saints’ Church.
The blinds at St Marys are still ongoing through a faculty. Remains of the brick wall in the overspill car park is still waiting to be removed. Several areas of the roof of All Saints have been repaired. Trees outside the North Door have been trimmed as they were growing into the water pipes causing blockages. These have now been cleared. We were approached by a company called Remedi who work with young offenders requiring a certain number of hours’ community service. The young people, under supervision, have repainted the sheds at All Saints’ and maintained the bug houses. They have been involved in the clearing of weeds etc around the hall. We are hoping to re-engage with them during the summer months.
The boilers in All Saints, St Mary’s and the Church Hall have received their annual service. Thank you for all your support

Church Hall and Administrator Report
During 2024 I continued to undertake many of the day-to-day administrative tasks, such as producing the weekly news sheet, service orders, answering emails and telephone enquiries, producing notices and keeping the church family facebook page up to date, along with ‘A Church Near You’ national site which has details of our local services etc.

I also co-ordinated bookings for St Mary’s, which now has 6 regular groups meeting, along with acting as volunteer Church Hall Manager - taking and invoicing bookings and keeping a diary of all bookings across the three venues.
Regular bookings were up to full occupancy during 2024 with one new group starting plus increase in usage by church groups.
We now have full use during weekdays apart from some Monday mornings and two Friday evenings per month.
Weekends continued to be fairly busy with parties and one-off lettings, plus church services took place in the hall on Sunday mornings from October due to the high cost and inefficiency of heating the church.
We were once again also able to host church quizzes, concerts, Shrove Tuesday supper, Sawley Festival, Light Party and Christmas Fair during 2024. Many thanks to those who have helped with hall cleaning, setting up and collecting supplies, and to the Buildings team who have mended things to keep the hall running smoothly for the church and the community.

GROWING FAITH
Growing Faith is a Church of England initiative which aims to double the number of children and young people in church by 2030. It is about working with parents (home), school and children and young people. It is not a programme but is about changing our culture and attitudes so we put children and young people at the centre of all that we are doing. We have been working on developing links with schools and families in general, though there is still much to do.

SCHOOLS
Open the Book Our Primary schools are still very happy to allow our ‘Open The Book’ teams to perform in their assemblies. The volunteers enjoy the storytelling too! We attended 5 assemblies last year taking God's word into Sawley Infants, Juniors and Dovedale schools, and have dates for 2025 assemblies.
( Mary Phipps) Real Easter and Christmas 50 children from Sawley Infants attended All Saints for the productions of 'The Crucifixion and the Resurrection' at Easter and 'I'm a Donkey' before Christmas. 120 children were entertained at St Mary's with the same stories, which although a tight squeeze, went well! We all look forward to continuing this mission. ( Mary Phipps) Dovedale I met Dovedale Head and the R.E leads. I helped in year 1 and attended their end of year play. I have taken 4 assemblies. Sawley Infants I have met the R.E lead several times plus one of the
Headteachers. In our discussions I asked them what the church could do for the school. They really need a parent drop–in before school. They have a large portacabin with toilet and kitchen that could be used. The Head is very keen and is looking into to the legalities. We discussed this at PCC – might be good to look into ‘school pastors’ scheme for this. They also mentioned they would love a Bible Club sometime in the future. I went to Reception classes on 29[th] Nov to talk about my job and also to read them a Bible story. I took an assembly on 5[th] Dec about the Chrismon symbols and they made some beautiful decorations for church.
Sawley Juniors After not getting any response for a long time I was contacted in September and went to meet the R.E lead and the music lead. The school came to church for their Harvest assembly which went really well. The choir came to church for their Christmas concert, along with all the parents, it went really well. The whole school (320 children in 2 parts) came to church on 17[th] Dec for their Christmas assembly. They also made Chrismon symbols which were put in the welcome area.
YOUTH SAINTS In April 2024 we started Youth Alpha with 10 young people attending. Each session began with a meal together followed by the video and discussions. The young people were asked if they wished to continue and 9 of them did (the 10[th] one has since come back). This group then became Youth Saints (or Churchies as they call themselves!). They are using ‘Urban Saints Energize’ material which is excellent. Thank you to the PCC for agreeing to pay the subscription of £21 per month. The young people led a service last autumn which went well. They are preparing a dance and sketch for Easter Sunday. 5 of the group were confirmed in November. They are a lovely committed group. Thank you to those who help and provide the food and support.

LITTLE SAINTS team consists of 5 kind volunteers (4 regular ladies and 1 lady covers holidays).
The session consists of free play, a Bible story, snack time, more free play and then tidy up and singing time. The group size varies each week, but we generally have between 12 and 20 families attend with varying numbers of children. We gave money to a charity this year and collected donations for Foodbank. The feedback is positive and everyone seems to have a good time.
(Jenny Johns) SUNDAY CLUB was lead on a rota by Jenny and Joy. The readings followed the church lectionary, but they were delivered in a more creative way using simpler language and craft and games to convey the messages. The attendees are mainly church family children, but there were weeks where visiting children attended. A rota is being sorted for helpers that are DBS checked, instead of asking people on the morning to help, as well as seeking some people to lead along with Jenny. (Jenny Johns)
UNIFORM GROUPS 1[st] Sawley Scout Group visited church on 18[th] April. This went very well and we hope to build on this. Anne attended Rainbows at Dovedale School on 4[th] December.
CRAFTY CHATTY CHURCH the numbers are still good and growing. We are working on getting the publicity out and building a bigger team (2 have recently joined).
YOUTH CAFÉ at one point Youth Café was attracting around 40 young people a week, nearing capacity in St Mary’s for the winter months! There are 7 cheerful volunteers who run it on a rota basis and two of these attended Youth Work training in November. The numbers have dropped off around Christmas but may pick up again in the warmer months and we have recently refreshed our publicity for this. (Abi Parker)
LIGHT PARTY 62 children attended along with babies and adults. Overall it went well but we are reviewing how things can work better next time. Thank you to all who helped. We also held the popular Good Friday morning children’s event. AIDAN WATSON came to preach / speak on 22[nd] September at Family Worship. He is the lead for Children and Young People’s Ministry in the Diocese.
WELCOME AREA (mentioned in Priests-in-charge report) this is nearly finished and just needs publicising to encourage young families to come along.
Please keep praying for our outreach to families and children and our work with the schools. It does require a lot of perseverance. Pray for more helpers and leaders also. There are many opportunities and possibilities which require money, time and people. Please pray that God will provide and bring the good news to many.

Sawley Wellbeing Café 2024
Sawley Wellbeing Café has been running since August 2021. Our aim is to improve the mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing of carers, the person they are caring for, or people who live alone. There are a few guests who don’t fit this remit, but they have been offered a place because their health benefits from attending. We are currently full with a waiting list.
Each week we have afternoon tea while discussing a specific topic with related activities. This enables the members to socialise, be heard, have fun and learn new things. We currently have seven tables of six guests and at least one volunteer per table who leads the discussion. During 2024 we discussed 50 different topics in the same number of weeks and had visits from Citizen’s Advice, Derbyshire Carers Association, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, our local PCSO’s and St Mary’s Knit and Natter group.
Each week the volunteers begin the session with a prayer for the session and for those known to us who are struggling. Each table has a menu card advertising that prayer support is available to guests if requested.
The Wellbeing Café is free to attend, but we accept donations from the guests and volunteers towards expenses. We donate 40% of these to the upkeep of the church hall then the surplus monies are donated to a charity voted for by the guests. In 2024 our chosen charity was The Alzheimer’s Society for which we raised £1865.84.
Thank you, Lord, for our amazing volunteers and all the resources we have been gifted to enable us to run the Café each week.

Food and Friends on Friday (part of the Warm Welcome Spaces Initiative)
The parish continued to provide a warm welcome space on Fridays at St Mary’s as a response to the cost of living crisis and the need to keep warm and combat the loneliness felt by a lot of people over the winter months. It also serves as a meeting place for small groups of friends and has become a hub on Fridays within the local community.
Other churches in Long Eaton did similar things and between us we ensured that there was something available each day of the week.
We have a team of seven volunteers, mostly from our congregation and led by Mary Phipps, who make snacks and chat with visitors.
We once again remained open throughout the summer months due to the popularity and demand with an average weekly attendance of 18-28 visitors from a range of backgrounds and living situations and ranging from young adults to older people.
Church members continued to donate a lot of the food and we have some donations via the Foodbank. In December we secured a grant from Derbyshire County Council for £900, which will pay for heating and electricity at St Mary’s during the sessions and for fresh milk, bread ,fruit and butter weekly up to November 25.
All food, which included soup, toast, porridge, biscuits and warm drinks, remained free to anyone who visited. People continued making friendships and enjoying crosswords, jigsaws and dominoes as well as adult colouring and crafts. The venue was open every Friday except for Good Friday and 27[th] December and continues into 2025. Angela Clayton

Priest – in – Charge / Leadership Report for APCM 30[th] April 2025
It has been a good year where we have seen God at work in many ways doing new things and working in people’s lives. I hope you feel encouraged by this and will join me in praying for more and being involved in this.
ALPHA 13 people completed the course, which went really well. Following on from this four people wanted to carry on meeting and a new home group started at the Rectory on Sundays at 4pm which other people then joined. They have since done ‘Christianity Explored’, ‘Discipleship Explored’ and ‘Fruitfulness on the Frontline’.
TAKING CHURCH OUT The services at Long Eaton View have been going for nearly a year. They take place every 4-5 weeks and are well attended. We have about 5-6 people come from church to support, helping with singing and chatting to residents afterwards. The manager emailed me, ‘You fill the place with God's presence as they say, and it can really be felt’. We had a very well attended Carol service in the main lounge, which was packed and enjoyed by all. I also do visits to residents in their rooms and have taken Communion. We also went to Cranfleet Court to sing Christmas carols which was well received.
VISITING GROUPS I continue to drop into church and community groups – Knit and Natter, Wellbeing Café, Youth Café, Little Saints, Manna Food Boxes. PASTORAL It does seem that there is a lot of care and visiting taking place, but I would like to build a team of visitors to make this more efficient and to be able to be more planned in our care and visiting. People would need training and would all have to be DBS checked, if they aren’t already.
COMMUNITY I have become a Trustee to the Food Bank. For this year I will be becoming chaplain to the new women’s house at Canaan Trust. I will also be a Foundation Governor at Sawley Juniors. I dedicated the plaque for Arthur Clowes. I attended the Parish Council AGM and later met with Alan Chewings. Both Chris and I helped at the Seniors Community lunch in September and I helped at the Christmas lunch. I am in close contact with the Parish Council and get involved in their community events.
TEAM I am grateful for our wonderful team. Thank you to Sam for being a great colleague, to Paul Cavill, Michael Bates and to Chris Wilkins, who was licensed as a Reader on 20[th] April and says ‘thank you from me as licensed nearly a year and I am enjoying leading and preaching!’. Rosie is stepping down from Reader ministry after 20 years. Thank you to Rosie for all her ministry to the church. I meet with Sam regularly and with the whole team every 3 months. We are blessed to have you all.
TEACHING The Lent Couse in 2024 was ‘LentWise’ by Paula Gooder which was well received. There was a sermon series which went with this. Existing groups ran the course plus we held one on Thursday mornings. At Pentecost we had a sermon series on the Holy Spirit. We also had a sermon series on Romans: 15 v 13, looking at unity, hope, trust and joy which was appreciated. During Advent we had a sermon series on angel visitations to different characters in the Christmas story. Our Frontline groups are a good source of teaching and pastoral support. Three of them meet fortnightly (weekly in Lent) and one meets weekly. Thank you to Paul for providing questions for the groups to look at, which are based on the Sunday readings.
OCCASIONAL OFFICES I have taken 4 funerals in church followed by the crematorium, 8 funerals in church followed by a burial, 9 interments and 1 service at the crematorium. Sam also took 1 funeral and Sam Tredwell another. 7

weddings (we had 10 last year – Sam took 3) and 3 baptisms plus 2 by the Bishop. I held a Marriage Prep morning for all our couples. These are good opportunities to reach out in love and care.
SERVICES
Crafty Chatty Church is now monthly and has been growing in numbers. We have had new people involved with the crafts which is good.
Harvest The focus in 2024 was the Food Bank. We had a harvest supper on 5[th] October with a speaker from the Food Bank coming. Crafty Chatty Church had the focus on the Food Bank and a good amount of food was collected for this. Healing we had a special healing Communion in September with anointing and prayer ministry offered after the service. There was a good take–up. It would be good if this became more frequent.
Baptism and Confirmation It was wonderful to welcome Bishop Libby who came to confirm 11 candidates, 2 of whom were also baptised on 13[th] November. One candidate was from Kirk Hallam. It was a real joy and very moving. Remembering Service – this went well and people found it helpful. Remembrance Service – the church was packed with all the uniformed groups, with some of them involved. A great many came back to the hall afterwards.
Christmas services There was lots of positive feedback about Christmas, numbers were good (especially the Carol service, Christingle, crib and Midnight communion). Many ‘Why Christmas’ booklets were taken. It was commented that the crib service was attended by people who haven’t been for a while. Christmas Day service wasn’t well attended. The church was beautifully decorated, thank you to everyone for that, the Chrismon symbols were great. The Scouts’ Carols service was packed and went well. The Silver Prize band were happy to be in the choir stalls, which seems to be a good solution for the future.
PRAYER Prayer breakfasts have continued and are always a good time of fellowship and prayer. Thank you to Rosie Broadbent for organising the prayer chain. We had a Quiet Day led by Revds Adrian and Jill Chatfield on 19[th] October at Holy Trinity Mapperley. This went well and was appreciated, although only 14 attended.
LLF ‘ Living in Love and Faith’ : As of 17[th] December 2023 clergy were permitted to bless same sex couples in main church services. PCC decided it was important that our congregation was well informed and allowed time to discuss and consider the ramifications of this, so we ran the LLF course over the summer, with about 16 people attending each week. While the content of the course was lacking at times, the level of discussion and sharing was very good. WELCOME AREA We received a grant of £500 from the Parish Council and £250 from the Coop to develop our welcome area. This was spent on a welcome pull– up sign, two sofas, a coffee table (thank you to Andy Porter for making a second one), soft toys and wooden toys, book bags (with knitted characters made by a lady at Knit and Natter) and a children’s table and chairs. We now need to publicise that we have this area if people bring young children or need some space to be quiet.
CHURCHYARD MINISTRY On Christmas Eve we had a gazebo near the church path offering mulled wine, chocolates, service invites and pastoral cards to those visiting the churchyard to lay flowers etc. This was a great success and we had many good conversations. The church was also open for people to go and pray or just reflect. We are intending to do this again on Mothering Sunday weekend. Thank you to those who volunteered to make this possible.

Frontline Groups report
The Rectory homegroup came out of the Alpha Course which was run at the beginning of 2024. It is held weekly on Sunday afternoons at The Rectory. In the year 2024, we have studied and discussed Christianity Explored and Discipleship Explored, both produced by The Good Book Co and consisted of a handbook and supporting video. It has been a time of deepening our faith in Jesus and knowledge of God, strengthening our friendship and having fun at the same time; so faith, friendship and fun. The evening ends with refreshments. There are currently (pre Lent 2025) five members in the group. If you would like to join, please see Chris Wilkins.
Mike and Geraldine report : Our home group meets every other Wednesday during term time. We have ten in our group when everyone comes, discussions are lively and everybody joins in. We thank Paul for setting our questions and sending them out to us all.

Curate’s Report

Another year serving in Sawley has yet again flown by. It has been different for me as for the first time in many years I am living outside of the Parish and outside of Derbyshire. Our move to Stapleford at the beginning of 2024 is allowing us to begin stepping back from working and looking towards retirement. This is not the plan for my Church role though, and the call to serve in Sawley remains strong.
I have loved preparing and delivering services and preaching. There is something very special about creating a time for all of us to join together to worship and draw closer to God. Crafty Chatty Church has continued to evolve and is a popular service. It is wise to move to monthly sessions, we need to be ready to receive young families when they walk through our doors. The prep for all involved in these services is considerable and the new members of our team are very much appreciated.
At Christmas we were able to provide some ministry in the churchyard to those visiting graves. It was good to be able to talk with the visitors and provide a warming drink, a chocolate and a prayer if they wished. This area of ministry has been on my mind and prayers for a while, so it has been wonderful to see it in action. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.
I visit some of our members who are no longer able to get to church, taking communion to them and spending some time talking and reminiscing. This is a rewarding part of my work and is greatly appreciated by those I visit. Thank you to Rosie for accompanying me on some of these visits.
It is difficult to take funerals while I am in full-time work and I have only covered one this year. It is an area of ministry that is a privilege to be involved in, drawing close to a family at such at sad time.
Weddings, however, are planned in advance so I have been able to lead a few of these celebrations. This year I was able to marry my daughter Kathryn and Chris, it was a very special occasion and so lovely to have so many church members joining us. It can be a challenge when you play more than one part in an occasion, but it was a privilege to be asked and something I will remember with joy and love.
I am now in my fourth year as a curate, it is usual for a curacy to last 3 years but, as I am not full time, mine will be 5 years in total. At the end of the curacy, I have to evidence that I covered a wealth of national criteria and I am in the process of collating this. I ask for your prayers as I juggle the immense amount of work this involves with my job, my ministry and my family.

Report on the proceedings of the Deanery Synod
For 2025 Annual Parochial Church Meetings: Church Representation rules: M5(1)(e)
The South East Derbyshire Deanery Synod met formally on three occasions in 2024.
In February we focussed on ‘money’, with presentations about the financial challenges as well as the opportunities within the Diocese and the support available to parishes.
In July we took stock of all that was happening within our local church communities that supports the aspirations of the Diocesan Vision and Strategy. All the information has been captured into what we would like to be a living document of what is happening, what is working well and who can suggest ideas on making our local presence effective in our various contexts.
At the July Synod we celebrated the appointments of the Ven Andie Brown as Acting Area Dean and the Rev Dawn Knight as Assistant Area Dean.
Our Synod in October looked at areas of social justice and included presentations on ‘Manna Food Boxes’, a scheme to support families move from reliance on foodbanks; ‘Upbeat’, a group supporting asylum seekers and ‘Just Ice’; a group supporting people trapped into slavery.
In addition to our formal meetings the deanery welcomed Bishop Libby and Bishop Malcolm for a day visit in May as part of ‘Thy Kingdon Come’. The Bishops worshipped and met groups and community representatives across the Deanery.
Deaney chapter has continued to meet during the year focussing on mutual support for our clergy. The Deanery leadership team has also facilitated support for parishes in Vacancy.
As mentioned, our Deanery Leadership team was strengthened with the arrival of Andie and Dawn. However, following a reorganisation of the administrative support across the Diocese, Helen Bridger, our Deanery Administrator, was made redundant in November. We have really appreciated the contribution of Helen to the life of the deanery over nearly two years and will miss her.
Finally, the following were elected as Deanery representatives on the Diocesan Synod for the period 2024 to 2027: Revd. Andrew Baguley, Revd. Christine French, Revd. Ailsa Hunt, Revd. Dawn Knight, Revd. Phil Selby, Revd. Sam Tredwell, Revd. Bellringers' Report for 2024
We continue to ring throughout the year for Sunday Morning Services and other Special Services and events.
On 5th January a Quarter Peal was rung at Sawley of ‘Little Bob Major’, which included four of our ringers, in celebration of a ringer from Kegworth Church for his birthday and also because he has been Ringing Master at Kegworth for 40 years.
23rd February we had an all Sawley band of ringers to ring a Quarter Peal of ‘Grandsire and Plain Bob’ in Celebration of David Marshall's 90th Birthday. David rang and was also the conductor.
March was the District Striking Contest at Ticknall and the combined method team of Sawley and Long Eaton got through to the final, but unfortunately the final was held in June and too many ringers were either away or working which meant we were unable to enter a team.
In April we had visitors to ring from Etwall. Also in April a visit was arranged to Boston, by James, to meet up with his friends from Cambridge, who organised to ring at three towers. Boston Stump was the first ringing event and we had to climb 209 steps to reach the ringing room.
In June we rang for the opening of the Church Event in Celebration of those Married at Sawley.
In July we had two sets of visitors during the Sawley Festival when we opened the tower. Also in July we hosted a Southern District Association monthly meeting.
September we had visitors from Brewood in Staffordshire to ring.
In November Stuart again tolled the bell for the Remembrance Day procession to Sawley War Memorial.
In December James and two other ringers travelled to Bedford to again meet up with Cambridge ringers on their tour.
Our Christmas fuddle was held in December at Ian and Judy's home with plenty of food, chatter and handbell ringing, a very enjoyable and relaxing evening.
To end 2024 we also rang for the Carol Service, Crib Service and Midnight Communion Service.

Church Music
This year we have had Crafty Chatty Church services most months and band usually play at these services. It has been great welcoming Chris to Sawley along with Anne as his skills as a pianist have been really appreciated in our pool of players. Jack, Sue and Kathryn also play the piano in lieu of Abi, quite regularly, and Graham played the organ for the big community Remembrance service. The Sawley Festival happened again in July with lots of visiting musicians performing and visitors enjoying the entertainment and looking around church at the art from the local schools. Church family choir performed a concert version of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ accompanied by Abi on the piano and it was really joyful and well received. Church family choir and a capella quartet both contributed to the music in the Christmas Carol Service, too. Hopefully these special events and the weekly music for church services will continue to be a blessing to those participating and the congregation.

Safeguarding Report
There are no serious Safeguarding issues to report.
DBS checks and Safeguarding Training are up to date, with volunteers booking their online courses to comply with the Diocese 3 year renewal policy.
All risk assessments for the churches and various groups using the facilities are reviewed regularly by the Safeguarding Team, and amended as necessary. There are currently 16 groups using the facilities at All Saints’ and St Mary’s, and 5 church-run groups. All are aware of the Safeguarding policies and have risk assessments in place.
Sawley Parish Policies are assessed regularly and are reviewed by the PCC annually. There are copies available to be viewed by all in the church hall and St Mary’s.
The Parish Dashboard progress is at 99%.

Events Team
Throughout the year, the Events team have poured hundreds of cups of tea and coffee, opened many packets of biscuits and provided light refreshments at events. We served dinner for the Shrove Supper (sausage and mash) and at the Alpha course, and provided warm drinks and a bacon roll at the Sunrise Service and also at our Crafty Chatty sessions.
Many of the team are on the rota for tea and coffee at each service in both Churches.
Our major event for this year was our ‘Married in Sawley’ day, a two-day event with many people visiting our beautiful church to see our display of wedding dresses and memorabilia from weddings held in Sawley Church throughout the ages. It was a resounding success where friends met up, shared stories and celebrated, memories. At the end of the Saturday there was a special time as many couples took part in a renewal of vows service, led by Anne.
In September we held an Autumn Fair at St Mary’s, another lovely day with a BBQ, craft stalls and of course tea and cake.
Our other major event was our Christmas fair comprising tombola, raffle, craft stalls, cake stall along with Jacket potatoes with fillings and of course plenty of teas and coffees.
We hope to provide lots more events in the forthcoming year and we would like to thank everyone involved for all their help and support. Here’s to 2025.
