Minutes of the Meeting held to elect the Churchwardens
&
Minutes of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting held on Wednesday 26[th] April 2023 at 7pm
Present: There were 28 Church members present, including Curate Sam Dennis, our Chair Paul Cavill and Abi Parker, PCC Secretary, taking minutes.
Lay Chair Paul Cavill opened the meeting at 7.05pm. He thanked everyone for coming and said there was commitment and strength shown in the number of people attending. He read from 1 Corinthians 12 saying we are all brothers and sisters in Christ and that every gift we offer is for the building up of the body of Christ, all of us offering help and guidance to each other and the wider community. He led us in prayer for ourselves and for the meeting.
Apologies: Roz Walker, Keith Scales, Peter and Rayleen Rankin, Hannah Winn, Sue Cavill, Ian Johns, Richard Binding, Val Glover, Megan Suiter.
THE MEETING HELD TO ELECT THE CHURCHWARDENS
The nominations for this year are:
-
i Joan Suiter, proposed by Richard Binding and seconded by Kathryn Moran
-
ii Pauline Porter, proposed by Linda Thompson and seconded by Rosie Broadbent
As these were the only 2 nominations both were unanimously appointed for the next year, with our sincere thanks. The Churchwarden role is an important one and we are grateful for the commitment shown in standing.
THE ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING
1 Minutes of APCM held on 18[th] May 2022
- The minutes of the previous annual meeting were unanimously accepted as a true record of the meeting. They were then signed by the Lay Chair.
2 Matters Arising
There were no Matters Arising from the floor but Paul referred to what Tony had said in his chairman’s remarks last year, that his prayer for our congregation at All Saints and St Mary’s was that we would grow closer together through the vacancy period and that we look back on it with thanks to God for what He has taught us and done through us. Paul said this prayer has certainly been reflected in our experiences of the last few months.

3 Electoral role
The Electoral Roll was prepared by Ian Johns and the figures brought to the meeting by Kate Bassford in his absence due to illness.
Total on electoral roll : 118 Joined : 1 Left the area : 3 Deceased : 2 Of the 118 : 75 are Residents, 43 non-residents
4 Reports
Paul directed members of the meeting to the reports contained in the Annual Reports Booklet, which includes the report from the Deanery, church activity and Buildings etc and asked for any queries.
June said she would like to extend a big thank you to Kathryn as she steps down from being Warden and all present agreed. Paul then led us in prayer for the work accomplished by our Wardens during the past year and praying for energy and encouragement for our two Wardens in the year to come.
Paul said the booklet spoke of initiative and teamwork and we are all very encouraged by the reports of our activities.
5 Presentation of the accounts
The accounts were included in the reports booklet and Mary highlighted that our assets are reduced from £49,000 to £30,000 as we used nearly £14,000 from the Business Reserve in order to pay our Parish Share in full last year. However, normal running expenses for church have been met from the current account. The other amounts taken from the Business Reserve covered specific payments – our contribution to the nature board in the churchyard, the lightning strike test, contribution to the painting restoration. Many thanks from us all to Mary, Glynn and the Finance team for their hard work and the clarity of the accounts.
We are now waiting to receive a card reader and this will hopefully increase donations and make it significantly easier to receive money from those visiting for weddings, christenings etc. We are hoping to install wifi in our buildings to support this, the current plan is that the signal will reach into All Saints’ from the hall, through the church windows. A suggestion was made that we could pass around the collection plate and it has the card reader installed in the bottom, perhaps we could use one of Randall’s wooden whittled plates for this!
A query was made about our donation to the charity AWM and Paul explained this is Arab World Ministry, who his son Fred and wife currently work for in the missionary field. Open Doors is primarily a literature ministry, it began when the iron curtain came down smuggling Bibles into China and Russia; Communist China is still fiercely anti-Christian and in many Arab countries it is illegal to own a Bible. At the last PCC meeting of the calendar year we will review the charities we wish to support for the coming year.
- 6 Appointments: Independent Examiner . This year’s accounts were audited by Brian Parker, who is an Ex-Accountant, member of St. John’s Church Long Eaton, Lay Chair of the Deanery and on the Bishop’s Council. Colin Heap reviews St Mary’s accounts for us too. They are happy to fulfil this role for us again for the coming year. The members present unanimously accepted Brian as Independent Examiner again for 2023.

7 Annual Fabric Report
This is covered in the Wardens and Buildings reports in the booklet, however Joan mentioned to the room the main things that had occurred during the past year. The chancel roof was eventually repaired and the lightning test restored to working order. The wall by the outside car park was knocked down and repaired (twice) and a small portion of internal stonework fell down within church. Kate was assured by the stonemason that this shouldn’t be a recurring problem; Joan needs this in writing to let the insurers know and then we can take the cordon down. During 2022 we used the Church Hall for services January to March and also between October and Christmas, excepting large community services.
8 + Election to the PCC
9
This year there are five PCC vacancies; Abi highlighted that our numbers have usually comprised 12 members, plus Deanery Synod Representatives and Churchwardens but now we have additional members in Angela who sits on Diocesan Synod and Sue Cavill on General Synod and so the 4 nominations we have for PCC should be sufficient for a robust council. We have plenty of willing volunteers and we thank you all gratefully. Nominations were :
-
i Janet Micklewright, proposed by Abigail Parker and seconded by Angela Clayton ii Jonathan Parrish, proposed by Richard Binding and seconded by Keith Scales
-
iii Kathryn Moran, proposed by Phil Dennis and seconded by Angela Clayton
-
iv Kate Bassford, proposed by Kathryn Moran and seconded by Abigail Parker
For Deanery Synod :
-
I Joan Suiter, proposed by Abigail Parker and seconded by Randall Porter
-
Ii Ian Johns, proposed by Joan Suiter and seconded by Abigail Parker
-
Iii Pat Hassall, proposed by Abigail Parker and Paul Cavill
All nominees were unanimously accepted for their posts. This means we now have a council of 16 including 9 elected lay members and 2 Wardens as well as representatives of Deanery, Diocesan and General Synod, plus our Lay Chair and non-stipendary Clergy.
10 Chairman’s remarks
Paul said that the mission statement for our congregation is to be a ‘prayerful church, at the heart of the community’ and our report booklet and all that has been discussed tonight reflects this. All that we do is underpinned by prayer and we support each other in this way. However there is always more we can do. We have been in Vacancy during the second half of 2022 but we have welcomed new people and visitors for weddings, Christenings, funerals etc. We are a welcoming church and we can be intentional about this but it does seem to come quite naturally! The reports booklet also reflects how we have tried to take Christ into the community – Bellringing for the Queen, Youth Café, manna food boxes, Open the Book.. lots of ways. Paul said it wasn’t possible to thank
6
everyone individually for these and all our projects because everyone plays a part and is deeply appreciated. However some people have taken on so much responsibility and work in the past year and huge thanks are due to Sam, Kathryn, Joan and Angela for sorting out our services and keeping us running during the Vacancy. In conclusion he said thanks to us all and to God for all his gifts.
- 11 Any other business: As interviews for a new Incumbent had taken place today, Kathryn addressed the room and whilst she again said she couldn’t tell us anything she thanked everyone for their support and prayers. She thanked all those who had helped organise the day which had included a tour of the area, lunch and the interviews for two candidates.
12 Blessing
Sam closed the meeting using the Northumbria Blessing.

Church Wardens Annual Report for January to December 2023
The Church Wardens Would like to thank everyone who has contributed time, effort and expertise to the many and varied aspects of Church life.
All Saints’ and St Mary’s require many willing volunteers and a team effort to keep them running on an even keel. We also recognise, appreciate and support all church members who apply Christian teaching with their places of employment, leisure and in local community life.
We are assured that this Church takes its responsibilities towards the Diocese and local community seriously. Our buildings are well maintained and our Safeguarding and Health and Safety procedures secure. We are conscious however that there needs to be constant monitoring so that needless bureaucracy does not prevent our ability or desire to perform acts of compassionate service.
The Wardens are pleased to report that our Church buildings continue to be well used by our communities. It is especially gratifying to see the work with children and young people at All Saints and St Mary’s, which includes Little Saints and the Youth café as well as such initiatives as Real Easter/Christmas and Open the Book bearing fruit within our local schools and families. Development within the area of children and schools is a priority for everyone who is attached to our Church.
7
We continue to support ‘Food and Friends on Friday’ at St. Mary’s, offering a safe space to those in need of a warm space or place to meet with others, also the Food Bank, and the Manna Food Boxes, providing such a valuable service for the community as people’s budgets are still being tightened. It is good to be able to support the Wellbeing Café in the Church Hall, along with Singing for the Brain, we thank Janet and her team of dedicated helpers for providing these nourishing activities.
It has again been a challenging time for everyone, but we all have engaged with our frontline in any way we can. We are very grateful to Angela, our voluntary Parish Administrator, for the preparation of weekly news sheets, printing anything that we need for the services as well as overseeing the bookings for the Church Hall and St. Mary’s.
The last 2 years have not been easy for the Wardens, as we have been without a Priest-in-charge; leading our Church family has been challenging and we recognise with thanks the work of Sam our Curate, Paul our Reader, along with Joan and Kathryn, who helped to lead and organise our weekly worship during the Vacancy.
A big thank you to Kathryn and Peter, who represented our interests in the team to interview the candidates that had applied for the Rector’s position.
We are glad to say that in October Rev Anne Wilkin was Licenced as Priest in Charge of All Saints and St Mary’s and is busy settling into a new life here after moving from Somerset, with her husband and family. She is getting to know the area and is working with our local schools and the groups within our church.
In late October the Archdeacon visited for an Inspection, these should happen annually, but this was the first one to take place during the 5 years that Joan has been a Churchwarden. In most areas there were no concerns, but some aspects of administration need to be tightened up. Pauline and Joan are working together on these in readiness for the next inspection in the last quarter of 2024.
It was good that we were able to lead the Sawley Act of Remembrance for the community in November and host the Scouts Carol Service in December.
A reminder that there is a dedicated email for the Sawley Parish Church Wardens. We share this email, it will remain constant even when the people leave their post, the password to access the email changed as required in order to keep the email secure.
Our email address is wardens.at.sawleyparish@gmail.com please use this email for anything that we, as Churchwardens, need to be aware of.
Joan Suiter, Kathryn Moran and Pauline Porter.
Buildings Team Report 2023
We have had a reasonably busy year attending to general upkeep of All Saints’ Church, the Hall and St Mary’s. Jobs completed include:
8
-
Gates and fencing at St Mary’s
-
Flooring sanded and re-finished at St Mary’s
-
Awaiting for a faculty for the new blinds in St Mary’s
-
The brick wall outside church car park on Tamworth Road had been repaired, but sadly that has now been knocked down again.
-
• A new Sensor light has been replaced on the outside of the Church Hall. • Some jobs that have been identified are waiting for Faculties and work will commence as soon as we have been given permission.
-
The Defibrillator has been regularly serviced by the provider and some church family members undertook training in how to use it.
Ongoing work within the grounds of the Church and the grave yard continues. We held a ‘clear up day’ in June and September where the grounds were tidied and the sheds etc. cleared of rubbish.
St Mary’s Quinquennial assessment was completed by the church architect in November.
We would like to thank everyone that has helped to maintain our buildings and grounds during the last year.

Administrator Report and Church Hall lettings
In the first half of 2023 I continued to do many of the day to day administrative tasks - such as producing the weekly news sheet, creating and printing service orders, answering emails and telephone enquiries, producing notices and keeping the church family Facebook page up to date along with ‘A Church Near You’ national site which has details of our local services etc. https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/13417/ Until the arrival of our new vicar, Anne, I also took on co-ordinating funerals, ashes burials and applications for memorials etc.
I also co-ordinated bookings for St Mary’s which now has 6 regular groups meeting. I am very grateful to Samantha our curate who kept the new parish website up to date until it was taken on by Chris Wilkins in November. https://www.parishofsawley.org/
I continued in the role of volunteer church hall manager throughout 2023. I took care of bookings, invoicing for hall use and passing on any payments to the treasurer. Regular bookings went back up to full occupancy during 2023 with two new groups starting plus an increase in church group usage. We now have full use during weekdays apart from some Monday mornings and two Friday evenings per month. Weekends are fairly busy with parties and one-off lettings, and church services took place in the hall on Sunday mornings from October due to the high cost of heating the church.
We were also once again able to host church quizzes, concerts, craft fairs, Christmas Fair and The Sawley Festival during 2023.
Many thanks to those who have helped with hall cleaning, setting up and collecting supplies along with the Buildings team who have mended things to keep the hall running smoothly for the church and the community.

Children and Young people’s team
Open the Book
We experienced a warm welcome from the staff and children at our three schools, in 2023. These are Sawley Infant School, Sawley Junior School and Dovedale School. Each school has its own team which consists of members of our church and in the case of Sawley Junior School, representatives of Trinity Methodist Church as well as Irene from All Saints. If there is a shortage of volunteers then we help each other out.
We present a Bible story twice a term, these are chosen by the team. The story is enhanced by 'actors' dressing up appropriately and children in costume. They are pleased to help.
Real Christmas went well. A total of 90 children came to St. Mary's in three separate sessions. Children and adults dressed up to create the nativity story and it was good to know that the children had learned something about the Christmas Story.
The reception classes from Sawley Infant School came to All Saints. They were a bit small for some of the costumes, especially when it came to wearing crowns but adjustments were made successfully.
Thank you to Rev Anne for supporting us in this work and for her separate visits to the schools to meet up with the staff and children. Thank you to Chris Wilkins who has joined the Sawley Infant School team.
Mary Phipps and Rosie Broadbent
Sunday Club continues to be staffed on a rota basis by Jenny Johns and Joy Binding. Janet stepped down from leading in July, after many years of service to childrens’ work.
Sunday Club follows the same readings as in church with a teaching time and usually an activity and/or craft. Numbers attending were still fairly low with typically 2 – 8 children, more if there was a baptism.
Crafty Chatty Church sessions have proved popular with more families attending on these days.
Jenny Johns
Little Saints is popular and running well. We have 50+ families registered with us and each week we usually have 25+ families attend. We advertise other church events at the sessions and this has led to some families attending the Crafty Chatty Church as well. We continue to have a Bible story and often there is a craft that goes alongside the story. Children don’t always come to listen to the story and Anne shared some pre-school books that tell the stories with an animal theme. We have purchased these and they are enjoyed by more children. We have given 3 donations during the year to the Food Bank and we have made a donation to the Noonans Trust. A little girl that comes has this condition and it was agreed by the families that we should donate some extra money. This year we also purchased new chairs and tables to seat 12 children for snack time. We are a team of 4 with another lady on standby for holiday or illness cover .
Jenny Johns
Youth Café has been consistently well attended through 2023. We only meet during term time and often offer seasonal craft activities and snacks, relating to the church calendar where possible. It is good getting the young people involved
10
with creating things for church – for example making some of the snowflakes and stars which adorned All Saints for Christmas-tide. Weekly there is table tennis, pool, air hockey, colouring / drawing and miscellaneous table top board games which the children engage with as they please or with the leaders. We offer toast, biscuits, hot and cold drinks at no cost to the attendees. Most of our members come every week with some bringing the odd friend less frequently and new people popping up fairly often. Unlike previous winters numbers did not really decline this year and we average 25-30 young people each week. This is a squish in St Mary’s but never seems too hectic, the young people generally behave very well and just enjoy having a space to meet their friends. We lost a small batch of our oldest (original) members this winter, along with a lovely thank you from their mum. Most of our members are either year 6 or year 8, with a couple of older attendees and a few new 10 year olds. We’ve been pleased to welcome Anne along quite regularly and Chris has joined our team, they have been very supportive and warm in making connections with the young people. The leaders are Peter Monk, Sarah Johnstone, Hannah Winn, Kathryn Moran, Kristin Simmons, Chris Wilkins and me.
Abi Parker
Wellbeing Café Annual Report
The Wellbeing Cafe is a church outreach project for people who live alone and for carers to attend with the person they are caring for.
The cafe seeks to improve the mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing of its attendees through five opportunities
-
The opportunity to connect with others
-
The opportunity to be active
-
The opportunity to learn new skills
-
The opportunity to take notice
-
The opportunity to give to others
To help our guests connect with each other, be active, learn new skills and take notice, each week we provide a different reminiscence topic, plus activities related to that week’s topic in order to achieve these goals. We also signpost guests to local support and have visits from agencies such as the Carer’s Association and the local police. We continue to offer prayer support for anyone who attends the Café and the guests are made aware of this via a poster on each table. We also provide the opportunity to give to others by having a yearly charity. In 2023 we were able to donate £1662.22 to our charity for the year, Dementia UK.
By the end of 2023 we were at maximum capacity with 50 guests on the register and 11 people on the waiting list. When new people apply I now suggest alternative groups to them such as Food and Friends on Friday.
During 2023 we sadly said goodbye to some of our wonderful volunteers: Ross Clayton, Paul Cavill, Donna Daws and Elaine Jones. However God blessed us with the arrival of Joan Robinson, Linda Thompson and Chris Wilkins.
11
We discussed at our annual meeting whether to increase the number of tables from 7 to 8 to reduce our waiting list. We decided against this because it would stretch our refreshment and table resources. It would also reduce circulation space in the hall when serving hot drinks which is an additional risk factor.
The café continues to run solely on donations. At last year’s annual meeting, due to spiralling energy costs, we agreed to give 30% of our donations, after expenses, to the church hall account to assist with the running costs of the hall. At this year’s annual meeting the volunteers voted to increase this to 40% of our donated income. Thank you to Mary Holland and Pat Hassall for administering the accounts for us again this year.
Thank you Lord for another fun-filled, productive year.
Janet Micklewright
Food and Friendship on Friday (part of the Warm Spaces Initiative)
The Parish continued to provide a warm welcome space on Fridays at St Mary’s as a response to the cost of living crisis and the need to keep warm and to the loneliness felt by a lot of people over the winter months. Other churches in Long Eaton did similar things and between us we ensured that there was something available each day of the week.
We have a team of seven volunteers, mostly from our congregation who make snacks and chat with visitors.
We remained open throughout the summer months due to the popularity and demand with an average weekly attendance of 16-25 visitors from a range of backgrounds and living situations and ranging from children to older people. Church members continued to donate a lot of the food and we have some donations via the Foodbank. In December we secured a grant from Derbyshire County Council for £1000 which will pay for heating and electricity at St Mary’s during the sessions and for fresh milk, bread, fruit and butter weekly.
All food, which included soup, toast, porridge, biscuits and warm drinks, remains free to anyone who visits. People continued making friendships and enjoying crosswords, jigsaws and dominoes as well as adult colouring and crafts. The venue was open every Friday including over Christmas and continues into 2024.

Leadership team
Readers
In 2023, after prayerful thought, I felt that I should ask to renew my Reader's Permission to Officiate. With the endorsement of the PCC and encouragement from the Rev'd Samantha Dennis and support from Fiona Bennett at Church House, it seemed the right thing to do.
Rev'd Anne Wilkins gave me a very warm welcome to her team and it was a very special experience to walk with her, Sam Dennis and Paul Cavill to the War Memorial, on Remembrance Sunday.
I value leadership meetings and look forward to future ministry in our Parish. Thank you to all who have supported me in my decision.
Rosie Broadbent
12
By the end of 2023, quite a lot had changed from the previous year. There was and is now a team of Readers (including a soon-to-be-Reader) and clergy, where before there had been Sam Dennis and myself, with a lot of help from Michael Bates and visiting clergy and Diocesan officers. We have all seen God at work, providing for our parish through Anne’s appointment, Rosie’s return to ministry, and Chris’s clear calling to Reader ministry. I want to thank everyone for their prayerful support for me personally over the months of our vacant incumbency, and ask you to continue to pray for all in the team.
I said this last year: ‘One of the signs of a church working properly is the readiness of people to exercise their spiritual gifts for the benefit of others. Activities of all sorts, both long-established and newly-started, meet the needs of our communities, and are led and provided for by dedicated volunteers. This annual report as a whole shows that people are taking training seriously, are accountable to the church and to God, and are making a significant difference for good in the lives of people, particularly the vulnerable, in our communities.’ This still holds true, but now we have a leadership team, some of the pressure has come off and gifts can be exercised in different ways. The challenge for us all is to discern and respond to God’s call to reach out in the parish and further afield and see our church grow.
Paul Cavill
Curate
This year has been one of endless opportunities (and plenty of challenge)! Beginning the year in vacancy meant I continued to work at a great pace; I have continued to work full time in Southwell and Nottingham Diocese alongside my ministry here in Sawley. Therefore, not only was I glad to attend Anne’s licensing to welcome our new priest in charge but also to gain more life balance. Once Christmas was over my input to leading services and parish life, although busy at times, has become more manageable.
Alongside this September saw me enter year three of curacy training which involves some residentials, and several day and evening courses. Once this third year is completed all that remains is to submit a portfolio capturing the experience I have had during the last few years. The vacancy has given me the opportunity to experience many aspects of parish work that a part time curate may not usually have. A few examples are planning and leading the Easter period, chairing the PCC, preparation and conducting of baptisms and weddings, and funeral ministry both at the church and local crematoriums. I found that my employment leadership experience has been very useful and it has been good to reflect on how to adapt these to working with volunteers. As we worked through the vacancy it has been encouraging to see how everyone worked together. I have felt privileged to be part of the team.
Once my portfolio has been submitted it will need to be signed off by the Bishop and then the next part of my ministry will need to be defined. All through this journey I have felt called to Sawley and I continue to be drawn this way. I am excited about the possibilities for children and families work, as this aligns strongly with my work experiences and skills. I will pray that God defines my next steps at the time that is right in His eyes and that I will ready for whatever he has planned for me.
Rev’d Sam Dennis

- Priest in Charge Report for APCM 1[st] May 2024
The last five months since being licensed have been a truly wonderful time. We are happy and settled and know for sure that God has brought up here. It has been a good time of getting to know you all and of learning that we are part of a great church family. Thank you all for your encouragement, love and support. It has been a full and busy time and I have enjoyed getting out and about and meeting people.
GROWING FAITH – at the last PCC I shared the presentation I had given when I came on interview. Growing Faith is a Church of England initiative which aims to double the number of children and young people in church by 2030. It is about working with parents (home), school, children and young people. It is not a programme but about changing the culture so we put children and young people at the centre of all that we are doing. The PCC were in favour of this.
I then gathered together those who work with children and young people (Little Saints, Sunday Club, Open the Book, Real Christmas/Easter and Youth Café). This was to create one team and to share ideas about Growing Faith. I have also met with Aidan Watson who heads up this work in the Diocese and who is very supportive.
SCHOOLS – I have been into two of our schools and have met the Heads and R.E leads. I have been into Sawley pre-school and into Dovedale Reception and am taking an Easter assembly there. Both these schools are very open. I have also watched Open the Book being done there. It was good to be involved with the Real Christmas and I look forward to Real Easter next week. I hope that we can develop our relationship with schools and to make better contact with families.
YOUTH ALPHA - It has been seen that there is a need for our young people to be nurtured in their faith. We are starting a Youth Alpha on 21[st] April at 5pm at St Mary’s. This will be advertised at Youth Café as some may be interested in attending. This will hopefully kickstart an ongoing church youth group.
With Growing Faith there is much we can do: - pray, convey to the whole church and launch it, make services more accessible to children and families, involve them more, more Crafty Chatty Church, look at parenting courses, Bubble Church, outreach to baptism families and those on the fringes/lapsed, working with uniform groups (contact already made).
ALPHA - 13 people completed the course, which went really well. From this at least four want to carry on and so there will be a group doing Christianity Explored on a Sunday evening at 4pm at the Rectory.
TAKING CHURCH OUT - It is good that a new monthly initiative is starting in Cranfleet Court led by Rosie Broadbent and others. I have started a service at Long Eaton View which was well attended by residents. It was good to have members of the churches attend also. This will be every 4 – 6 weeks.
VISITING GROUPS - It has been helpful to visit both church and community groups – Knit and Natter, Wellbeing Café, Youth Café, Little Saints, Manna Food Boxes.
MANNA FOOD BOXES – Carl who leads the Sawley Team is stepping down. It would be a great shame to lose this outreach. We need someone to replace Carl and some new volunteers. Please pray that this will happen. We also want to boost the publicity for the boxes.
PASTORAL - It does seem that there is a lot of care and visiting taking place, but I would like to build a team of visitors to make this more efficient and to be able to be more planned in our care and visiting. I hope that we also reintroduce healing services
14
LEADERSHIP TEAM - I have been meeting with Sam Dennis our curate every fortnight for prayer and planning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all her hard work during the interregnum. She did an amazing job. We are also blessed to have others who lead and preach – thank you to Paul Cavill and Rosie Broadbent our Readers and to Chris Wilkins who is being licensed on 20[th] April. Thank you also to Michael Bates. It is wonderful to have a great team of colleagues and those who share the leading and preaching. TEACHING - During Lent we followed Paula Gooder’s ‘LentWise’ both in our homegroups and in our sermons. It was good to host a Lent Group at the Rectory. From Pentecost we will be having another sermon series on the Holy Spirit. OCCASIONAL OFFICES - So far I have taken 11 funerals (10 of them burials), 5 interments, 1 wedding (we have 10 in 2024) and 1 baptism (2 in the pipeline). I held a Marriage Prep morning for all our couples. These are good opportunities to reach out in love and care. We are also looking at how we can outreach to the many who come to the churchyard to lay flowers – especially on Mothering Sunday and Easter. We now have an agreed Baptism Policy.
SERVICES - It has been encouraging to see growing numbers attending and also people returning who used to attend. Keep praying about this. The highlights for me have been Remembrance when we saw a packed church with all the uniform groups attending. The Christmas services went well with great music and lots of joy. I look forward to Easter and pray that many will come to worship the risen Jesus.
PRAYER - We have had a special time at our prayer breakfast on the last Saturday of each month – everyone is welcome. Thank you to Rosie Broadbent for organising the prayer chain.
THANK YOU - to everyone who keeps the church running – to Angela for the admin, those who clean, Sandra and those who arrange flowers, for Abi and the music group, those who ring the bells, those who do the tech on Sundays, the vergers, those who read and do prayers, the welcomers and openers, our wonderful Events Team and Building Team, those on the PCC – especially our Treasurer Mary Holland and to Mary Phipps our Safeguarding Officer. Thank you also to all those who lead home groups and who lead groups in the week and Sunday Club. Last but not least thank you to our wardens Joan and Pauline for all their hard work behind the scenes. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone – you are all wonderful and I look forward to working with you in the coming year.
‘’ I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.’’ Philippians 1: 3 - 6 Rev’d Anne Wilkins

Report on the proceedings of the Deanery Synod For 2024 Annual Parochial Church Meetings: Church Representation rules: M5(1)(e)
Deanery Synod Meetings

The South East Derbyshire Deanery Synod met formally on three occasions in 2023.
On 31st January , the Synod was held on Zoom and welcomed Jeremy GowersCromie from Christian Aid. In preparation for efforts to move to net zero carbon emissions by 2030, Synod was encouraged in its resolve to pursue Net Zero targets by furthering our understanding of climate injustice.
The Net Zero discussion continued in our Synod of 19[th] June , at St Clements Horsley, where a panel comprising John Beardmore, Sue Cavill, Matt Barnes and Stella Collishaw shared information and took several questions about energy efficiency and cleaner energy possibilities for our church buildings.
The Synod of 11[th] October 2023 took place at Holy Trinity Ilkeston, and was the first Synod of the new triennium. It welcomed both new and long-serving members as well as elected Brian Parker as the Lay Chair and Andrew Whysall as Deanery Treasurer. Andrew succeeds Sydney Leleux, who was thanked for his several years of service in that role. We were joined by Aidan Watson, (Strategic Lead for Youth Ministry), Liz Seymour (Diocesan Board of Education), and Kate Hill plus her colleagues Abby and Emma (from Valley Cids) to explore the theme of Education and Mission through a combination of presentations and workshops.
Area Dean
Following a period of absence from Easter 2023 due to ill health, Rev Karen Padley formally stepped down from her role of Area Dean on 1[st] October 2023 and was thanked by the October Synod for her years of service. This vacancy is ongoing. In her absence, many of the administrative and pastoral duties of the Area Dean have been undertaken by Brian Parker and by Archdeacon Karen Hamblin.
Other Meetings
Chapter met seven times during the year (mostly via Zoom), and regular meetings were held for representatives of parishes without incumbents, to support and update them with worship resources and advice.
Deanery Administrator
Helen Bridger took on the role of Deanery Adminstrator for South East Derbyshire on 5[th] January 2023, and offers support on a range of issues to clergy, church officers and church members. Helen is a useful 'first point of contact' and can be reached on helen.bridger@derby.anglican.org or tel: 01332 278148.

Frontline Groups
During 2023 our lay reader Paul continued to provide questions for all the Frontline home groups, based on the previous Sunday's sermon. The groups met fortnightly. During Lent the groups had the opportunity to follow a Lent course produced by Embrace the Middle East, called The Kingdom of God is Justice and Peace .
Paul and Sue's group continued to meet fortnightly on Zoom. The group has 12 members and an average attendance of around seven people. The group finds the fellowship and prayer together encouraging and has enjoyed the varied Bible studies.
Our home group is doing well, we all are actively involved with the discussions and questions that are set for us. We have between 7-9 of us altogether. God Bless.
Mike and Geraldine.
We met fortnightly during 2023 apart from Lent, when we met every week. We had a 4 week break in the summer. The meetings were mostly at my home with an average of 8 people attending. The group were happy to use Paul Cavill's notes which were based on the readings from the preceding Sunday Service. Attendance remained constant during the vacancy and we have valued the opportunity to study the Bible to pray and to share fellowship with one another. We have shared the leadership of the group between Michael Bates, Linda Thompson and myself. Rosie Broadbent
Bell Ringers’ Report 2023
We continued to ring for Sunday morning services and other special services throughout the year. Our practice nights at Sawley are shared with Long Eaton on a Tuesday evening and we have had Millicent and Ethan join us to learn bell ringing, they are both progressing very well. In early March we were also joined on our practice night by ringers from Daybrook.
1st April saw the Southern District Ringing heats held in Sandiacre. We entered a team in the Arthur Ashby Cup and gained a place in the final. The final for the District heats was held in June at Horsley, we didn't win but we were pleased with our representation. On 6th May we rang for the Coronation of King Charles.
In July we hosted visitors from the District after a social event had been arranged which started at Trent Lock, walking to Sawley Church for ringing, and then returning to Trent Lock. On 30th September David arranged a ringing outing for Sawley and Long Eaton ringers, we were also joined by ringers from Cambridge (friends of James). The Cambridge ringers rang at Sawley and Long Eaton and then joined us for some of the other towers. We visited and rang at Aston-onTrent, Ticknall, Breedon-on-the-Hill and Diseworth, which was enjoyed by all. In November Stuart tolled a bell for the Remembrance Day Service as the procession walked to the Sawley War Memorial. Again our Christmas fuddle was held at Ian and Judy's house, with plenty of food, a quiz, and handbell ringing. A good social get together was had by all.

Church Music
I have continued to help to prepare music for services by suggesting hymns to leaders and arranging for another pianist if I am not available. During 2023 we have been blessed with more and more pianists who can help out playing for services, which is really great. The team of keyboardists now includes me, Sue Cavill, Kathryn Moran, Chris Wilkins, Graham Grammar and Jack Lawrence. I know Graham playing the organ at the Remembrance service was much appreciated, whilst on a week by week basis we tend to use the piano as it is situated amongst the congregation and better facilitates the mixture of more modern music required. It has been great to welcome Jack and Rowan into band this year, we continue to play at all age services once a month and sometimes on special occasions. I led another church family choir, which performed ‘Jonah-Man Jazz’ at the Sawley festival, surrounded by beautiful sea creatures which had been created by the local primary schools. We also sang at the Christmas carol service. It is fun for the children and adults to get together and sing, and everyone is welcome to join in.

Safeguarding Report for APCM
There are no serious Safeguarding issues to report. Reverend Anne Wilkins has complete access to the Safeguarding data. DBS checks and Safeguarding Training are up to date, with one or two exceptions, but volunteers are booking their online courses to comply with the Diocese 3 year renewal policy. All risk assessments for the churches and various groups using the facilities are reviewed regularly by the Safeguarding Team, and amended as necessary. There are currently 12 groups using the facilities at All Saint’s and St Mary’s, and 4 church run groups. All are aware of the Safeguarding policies and have risk assessments in place. Sawley Parish Policies are assessed regularly and reviewed by the PCC annually. There are copies available to be viewed by all in the church hall and St Mary’s. The Parish training Dashboard is at 97%. The PCC needs to complete their Domestic Abuse Awareness Training to bring us to 100%. Mary Phipps, PSO
