Church Wardens Annual Report for January to December 2020
2020 was to become a year in which we, as a church family, would face unprecedented challenges. With the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic we had to close our doors on 24[th ] March. We could not celebrate Easter as we had in the past. There were to be no weddings, funerals or services of worship. We had to find a new way of ‘doing’ Church.
With the closure of the church buildings the services moved to on line. We are delighted how well both Tony and Elaine tackled the technology to get services available for public access. These have been well received by many and we are grateful to Angela for distributing services on CD and the printed service sheets to those who do not have any internet access.
Your Churchwardens recognise that while the church buildings were empty many of you were supporting the community in different ways, Roger and Pat with their daily boards, Pat and others at the Foodbank and everyone generally looking after neighbours and family. It has been a challenging time for everyone but we all have engaged with our frontline in any way we can. You truly have done your part working to further the Kingdom of God in Sawley.
6
As the pandemic progressed and after reading copious amounts of guidance from the Diocese and reviewing our Health & Safety practices, we were able to open up again. Initially All Saints was opened for private prayer on Saturday afternoons and it was not just the church family that visited but some from our local community as well. We do feel that this met a need for the wider community.
Later in the year services started in All Saints and then at St Mary’s. When communion services started, we only offered communion of one kind. This was felt to be the safest option for us and the wider community.
Regrettably, owing to the risk of community transmission of the virus, we were not able to lead the Sawley Act of Remembrance.
Your Churchwardens would like to thank everyone who contributes time, effort and expertise to the many and varied aspects of church life. All Saints’ and St Mary’s require many willing volunteers and a team effort to keep them going, even when they are closed. We also recognise, appreciate and support all church members who apply Christian teaching within their places of employment, leisure and roles within local community life.
The following are some issues in no order of importance.
We are assured that this church takes its responsibilities towards the Diocese and local community seriously. Our buildings are well maintained, our Safeguarding and Health and Safety procedures secure and we have been adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
The Faculty to create a welcome area in the west end of the north aisle in All Saints was granted. The pews were removed and the cupboards were installed and the area has been carpeted. It is much more welcoming now and has facilitated social distancing in church as people enter and leave.
There are new toilets in the church hall. This has largely been funded by a grant that had the aims of upgrading the facilities of churches to a modern standard. We now have hot water in the toilets, which is surely something to be grateful for.
Now that the Local Authority has responsibility for Churchyard maintenance, there was some concern that it has not been maintained to its previous standard, this was partly due to being unable to transport people to the churchyard in a Covid secure way. It is however an emotive issue for the church family and the wider community. All we can do is direct any enquires regarding churchyard maintenance to the local authority. Our prayer is always for openness and honesty in our interactions with others.
We are very grateful to Angela who undertakes the Parish Administration, much of the preparation of weekly news sheets, the Spire magazine and printing anything that we have needed for the services as well as her ongoing work looking after the Hall
There are a number of people who maintain the three buildings and some of the grounds of both churches. The work undertaken by these volunteers frees up time and money for the furthering of God’s kingdom and they are a blessing.
7
Your Churchwardens continue to be grateful for all the help that is given for the Services at both churches. Thank you to everyone who had a part to play in welcoming our community and visitors to All Saints and St Mary' with the warmth and friendliness that we know are so important. We also thank those who planned, played a part, decorated the church, opened, and welcomed. It is the case that ‘Many hands made light work’. We cannot do it without you and we would like to thank everyone who plays a part, you are all working to further the Kingdom of God in Sawley.
We remain a church with ability to provide a varied menu of worship for all the church family and the wider community. Something that was particularly well received was the Walkthrough Nativity at which it was not just the church family that visited but some from our local community. We would like to thank everyone who planned, participated, decorated, painted and dressed the nativity, not forgetting all those cotton wool balls on the sheep.
We are very much looking forward to the day when we can reopen all our buildings and use them for the benefit of our community as we have in the past.
We wish to remind you that there is a dedicated email for the Sawley Parish Churchwardens. We share this email and it will remain constant even when the people leave their post, the password to access the email is changed as required to keep the email secure.
The email is wardens.at.sawleyparish@gmail.com. This will be used to circulate the Rotas by email, if requested. Please use this email for anything that we as churchwardens need to be aware of.
Richard Binding and Joan Suiter, April 2021
Curate’s Report 2020
Manna Food Boxes
Sawley Parish have been working collaboratively with St John’s church and Hope Long Eaton since April 2020 when we received funding to provide additional food for families during the first lockdown. The take up was huge and families commented on how much of a difference the additional food made for their families. With the rise in numbers of working families being furloughed and jobs being lost, many families were faced with the dilemma of paying bills or putting food on the table. So, after consulting with Fareshare, a national organisation that redirects over-produced food heading for landfill to charity organisations to redistribute this perfectly fresh, good quality and excess food back into the communities that need them. Our ethos is based very firmly within the five marks of mission:
-
To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
-
To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
-
To respond to human need by loving service
-
To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation
-
To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth
8
We believe that our Manna community not just tackles the practical and serving aspects of our Christian witness but creates a community of relationships that enables people to come to know the love of Christ – both within the volunteering and client bases.
Our food boxes cost £6 and families can purchase as many as they need for their requirements; with each box containing a variety of fresh and cupboard essentials worth over £35. We have over 70 clients signed up with up to 55 boxes a week being collected by local families. The harvest appeal last year that was donated has enabled us to purchase storage and shelving to store food safely and enables us to manage a website and pay platform so that families can book and pay for their boxes in advance. We are currently extending our provision into the Sawley community in the next few weeks, based at All Saints and we already have 30 people signed up for this from the local area. Future plans include having a team who can advise on debt and budgeting and practical cookery sessions with a healthy eating emphasis to tackle childhood obesity.
We are blessed with a great volunteer base of people from Sawley and Long Eaton churches right across the denominations as well as volunteers from local businesses and organisations. Many of our clients volunteer as well as an opportunity to put something back into the community. We are currently looking for volunteers from within our teams that we can train to take on oversight roles, both at St John’s and All Saints.
School and Community Engagement
Due to lockdown, regular assemblies and Open the Book sessions have not been able to take place within the school premises. However, three Open the Book sessions were recorded and sent into Sawley Infants, Sawley juniors and Dovedale schools. These were very well received, and I was asked by Dovedale to continue to record and send in monthly assemblies that would be streamed to the children in their classrooms. An Easter assembly was delivered via video last year and streamed to children at home and to Key worker children still attending school. I also attended Dovedale school at the beginning of the first lockdown to do a short ‘moving on assembly’ for the year 6 children who were due to finish that year with anticipation of them not returning to school before transitioning to secondary school. Five advent/Christmas assemblies were sent to all three schools in November and December with weekly advent wreath lighting in each classroom and a short reflection on each advent theme followed by an action song. I also recorded and delivered two additional RE support sessions for key stage 1 and 2 at Dovedale for their Christianity modules on ‘sacred places’ and ‘Why is the bible important to Christians’. These were very well received and were done in place of school visits.
Regular assemblies are being continued and sent to all three schools and plans to bring the children into church for curriculum and teaching opportunities in the next few months are in place pending ongoing Covid restrictions and guidance.

St. Mary’s Report 2020
There is obviously not a lot to report on St. Mary’s for the year 2020. All the usual services and lettings took place until March when we went into lockdown. A few services resumed in September and October and then lockdown came again
St. Mary’s were fortunate in being able to pay their share of the Common Fund to the Diocese for the year due to the generosity of the congregation still maintaining their regular collections.
The building has been checked weekly to make sure hygiene and maintenance requirements were in good order. I would like to particularly thank Jonathan Parrish for the continued maintenance of the grounds.
Jenny Russell (Deputy Churchwarden)
Report to Annual Parochial Church Meetings 2021 from South East Derbyshire Deanery Synod
Although 2020 was a very unusual year from March onwards, the deanery has still managed to fulfil the majority of its roles and both Karen and Angela have been available throughout lockdown in addition to the deanery leadership team and many staff from the parish support office to support and assist parishes as needed.
Prior to lockdown we held a deanery synod meeting at Long Eaton St John on Tuesday 11[th] February with the speaker being Reverend Beth Honey, diocesan pioneer and fresh expressions enabler.
In June, as parish representation legislation had not yet been agreed to allow synods to meet other than in person, we held a meeting of synod members via Zoom and opened it up to wardens and readers. Our speakers were clergy and laity who shared their experiences of continuing to offer worship and contact with congregations during lockdown and included examples of live streaming and broadcasting pre-recorded service, a telephone dial-asermon and CD recordings for those without internet. It also gave opportunity for members to be updated on latest guidelines and what support was available.
Unfortunately, our planned deanery days, social evening and deanery Advent carol service had to be cancelled due to COVID restrictions.
However, annual parochial church meetings were able to be held either in person or via Zoom by the end of October 2020 and the new members of deanery synod elected.
The first meeting of the new deanery synod took place via Zoom on 1[st] December 2020 with Bishop Libby as speaker, outlining the deanery vision. At this synod we also re-elected Mr Brian Parker as lay chair and Mr John Puxty as lay secretary.
10
Chapter meetings for clergy were also made available to readers and were held regularly throughout the year and had speakers including the new dean of the cathedral as well as offering opportunities for discussion on how ministry was being offered around the deanery during the pandemic and sharing of ideas and advice.
Reverend Peter Davey (Cotmanhay) and Reverend Andrew Taylor-Cook (Denby group) both moved to Scotland early in the year and Father Tom Barnfather (Holy Trinity Ilkeston) retired. Father David Lawrence-March took up his post at Long Eaton St Laurence and Holy Trinity Ilkeston on 1[st] December after being licenced via Zoom.
The area dean and lay chair have met representatives of parishes without incumbents regularly throughout the year, via Zoom, to support and update them with worship resources and advice.
The deanery has continued to produce a newsletter approximately every 8 weeks with news and individual articles and information for parishes- all contributions welcome.
2021 has started with a deanery synod meeting focussing on the diocesan vision and changes needed to make the Kingdom of God relevant to all generations.

Frontline groups 2020
Frontline groups are open to all and are an opportunity for Bible study, prayer and fellowship in small groups that usually meet in people’s homes. This report explains how the groups navigated the restrictions of the pandemic.
Sue and Paul’s Frontline group meetings had just got going in 2020 when lockdown arrived. The group then went through a number of stages.
At first they kept in touch through regular emails, and used this format for prayer requests. They felt supported by each other as they prayed for each other even though they could not meet.
Later in the year they began to meet online through Zoom. Not all members were able to do this, but those who could found it helpful. They used questions based on the sermons at the online services and limited the meetings to one hour as it’s difficult to concentrate for longer online.
One member of the group took copies of the questions to another member who is not online, and individual group members also kept in touch by going on socially distanced walks or calling at each other’s doors on walks and by phone.
11
The group felt supported by one another and enjoyed their online discussions, but they are looking forward to meeting in person again as soon as they can, particularly those who could not join the online meetings.
The Rectory Frontline group met for lively discussions following on from the Sunday sermons via Zoom. They were very pleased that a number of new people joined them. Their sense of fellowship and togetherness has been deepened by the Covid-19 restrictions.
Angela’s Frontline group did not run during lockdown as most were shielding and didn't have internet access.
When lockdown began, Ross, Rosie and Michael’s group promised to pray for each other at 7.30 p.m. every Wednesday and Rosie and Michael kept in touch with the group on a regular basis.
They have found that stronger links have made between members and two people have started regular walks together. Support has been there when extra prayers were needed. It has been good to share in love and prayer.
Sue Cavill
Little Saints Report 2020
We were meeting regularly until March, when the first Lock down started, and unfortunately we were unable to meet inside for the rest of the year.
However, we were able to stay connected as a group through texting and face book, or through casually meeting up outside when out for walks. At Easter, we were able to deliver Chocolate Eggs, Easter Story Books, and a simple recipe to doorsteps. During the summer, we organised a play date in the local park. Some families also attended a Christmas 'walk through' event, which included the Christmas Story and books were given to those who came.
We are hoping to re - launch the group in September 2021, on Wednesday mornings and very much look forward to meeting again.
Sue Street
Sunday Club Report 2020
Jenny Johns, assisted by Janet Micklewright, have continued to run Sunday club sessions since the resignation of our children and schools worker Joy
We were able to meet in the hall during January and February before the first lockdown and again briefly in October, before the second lock down. These were slightly unusual classes where we had to adapt our usual games and singing activities to reduce our risk of spreading the virus.
12
In the early part of the year we covered the same topics that our church leaders covered in the main services. In October we started using the diocesan ‘Bible Box’ resources created by diocesan children’s advisor Sarah Brown. These are based on the Godly Play style of teaching and seemed to be enjoyed by the children attending our socially distanced sessions in the hall. Throughout 2020 the numbers attending sessions in the hall averaged eight children.
For a large part of our year we have provided an online presence for children on the new Saints and Angels website, with support from Elaine Jones our curate. It has been a steep, but enjoyable learning curve producing videos and online material most weeks. We don’t know how many were able to access the online sessions.
Elaine also supported our children’s work with her socially distanced walk through Christmas event in All Saints church.
Jenny Johns and Janet Micklewright
Sawley Parish Youth Club Report 2020
Sawley Parish Youth Club is not currently in existence, having disbanded when lockdown began last spring. However the leaders remain committed to offering a youth group in Sawley and have met a couple of times to discuss this. We are hoping to meet shortly, with Elaine, who has some exciting ideas and we hope to be able to launch a new initiative later this year.
We currently have £215.31 in our account, which has not been touched in the last 12 months. This was from subs and we used to use such money to organise trips etc. We will ensure this is used for the benefit of the next group at the earliest opportunity.
Abi Parker on behalf of SPYC
Bell Ringers Report 2020
We started 2020 ringing for Sunday morning services and at our usual practice on Tuesday evenings alternating between All Saint's and St Lawrence's Long Eaton. In January we had two groups of visiting ringers at Sawley and then one group in February who were successful in ringing a quarter peal.
In March of 2020 all ringing was cancelled, starting with our annual ringing competition just before the national lockdown was announced. Since then we have only rung the bells at Sawley once for a wedding in September following Covid regulations. This involved ringing only 4 bells so that we could stay two metres apart; we wore masks and stayed on the same bell so that we weren't touching different ropes. We now await further details as to when we are able to resume ringing.
In March 2020 a website called 'Ringing Room' was developed to allow bellringers to log on, be assigned a bell and continue to practice our method ringing together. We have been doing this weekly since the summer but are very much looking forward to getting back in to the bell tower when it is safe to do so. Maureen Holbrook and Kirsty Shaw

KNIT AND NATTER REPORT 2020
Knit and Natter met regularly at St Marys on a Monday afternoon until lockdown in March but have not met since. We hope the group will start again as soon as we are able. Contact has been made during the year with our members. Easter and Christmas cards have been given to them and made sure wool was available to anyone needing it. Jenny Russell.
REPORT FROM CORNERGATE LUNCH CLUB 2020
Last year the Lunch Club celebrated 21 years since it was formed, but unfortunately, owing to the pandemic, our last meeting was on 10th March 2020.
At that time we had 26 members but unfortunately during the last year 5 of them have died. Since the closure of the lunch club we have kept in contact with our friends by phone, sending birthday cards and have also delivered decorated goody bags to each of them at Christmas, Valentine’s Day and at Easter. These bags contained a card, cake, biscuit, chocolate and at Easter also a palm cross. All of them were delighted to be remembered and to receive their bag and several expressed the hope that the lunch club would be able to resume shortly.
After some discussion with Tony (who had spoken with our curate Elaine) we were of the opinion that it would not be possible to return in the previous form, mostly because many of our guests are in their 90’s and have become more infirm and would need a great deal of help getting in and out of the volunteer driver’s car. Under Health and Safety guidelines we should only be transporting people who are able to get into cars without assistance and certainly we should not be using wheelchairs. Another problem is the staffing. We have already lost a driver, someone to set up and remove all the tables and chairs, and one of the people who does the washing up. And what we also have to bear in mind is that several of the staff are also 80+ and when we asked previously, were unable to get further volunteers. It thought that the new format will be more on the lines of a weekly afternoon tea with transport provided from trained drivers, or with a friend or family member who could transport them to the church hall or even by taxi sharing.
On a positive note we were able to make a donation to the new and improved toilet facilities from our funds.
June Oliver and Pat Harris.
St Marys Smile Club Report 2020
The last meeting of smile was the second week in March 2020. The situation was discussed, with those present. As some members had already stopped attending, it was decided to cancel the meetings from that time. We would resume the group when the pandemic was over.
We did have one of our group die, Iris Stoggall, who will be very much missed. Any monies accrued have been handed over to church funds.

Building Team Report
Sadly, due to Covid Restrictions we have during the last year been unable to address some of the outstanding jobs that needed attention.
However, we have been most fortunate in completing the Reordering within the Church.
Hopefully, many of you will have seen the amazing work that has been carried out in the area behind the main door.
We have many people we would like to thank for all the hard work and craftsmanship that has gone into it.
Bartrams of Burton-upon-Trent, who built the units and Lee Wright for the flooring.
Thanks also to those who helped behind the scenes in removing the pews, digging out the Struts and foundations.
The new toilets in the Church Hall are now complete and hopefully everyone will be able to access them with ease. Also, now we have a toilet with access from the hall, this allow children to access the toilets with their parents/carers without the risk of exiting through the main door.
Gates at St Mary's have been repainted and a repair to one of the posts has been carried out.
Work is to commence on the South Porch and the Vestry door in the Spring. Ian has carried out some research to ensure we are to use the correct products.
The light outside the boiler room has been repaired.
The Building Team have identified further jobs that need attention this coming year.
We would like to thank all involved with the works that have been successfully completed despite the restrictions and look forward to beginning rolling out our programme of work for the coming year.
Thank you for your continued support.

Spire Magazine and Church News sheet
The Spire was delivered to almost 150 homes in and around Sawley and collected from church by at least 40 others until March 2020 .Since Lockdown , we have been unable to deliver paper copies due to restrictions and content was difficult to find in the early days to fill an online version. Many people now receive an online copy of the weekly news sheet which has been extended where possible to include any news, photos and information and much of this information also included on our websites. The news sheet is sent by email weekly to over 50 people and published on the Facebook page. In addition it is delivered to up to 20 people who have requested a paper copy along with the services CD. This has been done using PPE and Covid-safe procedures. The future of the SPIRE as a paper publication will be reviewed after COVID restrictions are lifted Angela Clayton

Church Hall and Administrator Report
I have continued over the past year to do many of the day to day administrative tasks- such as producing the weekly news sheet, service orders, Easyworship projector presentations (when church has been open), answering emails and telephone enquiries, producing notices and keeping the websites and Facebook pages up to date with details about church closures and re-openings during stages of the pandemic along with details of online services and events.
Since March 2020, I have produced weekly CD’s of the online services for those who are unable to access online and have delivered these to between 15 and 20 people weekly along with a news sheet and bible notes.
I have also continued in the role of volunteer church hall manager throughout 2020. Up to March 2020, I took care of bookings, invoicing for hall use and passing on any payments to the treasurer. The hall has been closed for bookings since April 2020, but I check the hall several times a week and maintain a Health and Safety record and open up for occasional use for food distribution projects. Regular bookings have had to be paused at present but many of the groups are waiting for the time when they can safely return plus there are to be at least two other new groups. All of these will be carefully risk assessed both for COVID safety and under our safeguarding procedures when they involve children or vulnerable adults. Unfortunately, a few of our groups may decide to disband or alter focus due to changing circumstances over the past year.
We are very thankful for Graham and Dorothy Kirk who cleaned the hall under contract up to March 2020. Cleaning is now done by myself as needed until bookings are allowed again. Between October and December, the hall toilets were refurbished with the aid of a grant from the diocese and help from Cornergate funds.
We now have hot water in the toilets plus two individual accessible toilets, a baby change facility and three individual cubicles.
Unfortunately, as we have been closed for a year, hall funds are very low and an estimated £20,000 of income has been lost- though obviously there have been fewer costs in cleaning and heating.
