Minister’s Report

It’s my privilege and has been a great honour serving Hanwell Methodist Church as a part of ministry at Ealing Trinity Circuit. After spending some valuable times since September 2021, I find all the Churches are very friendly and welcoming and nicely situated at the hub of the local community. Due to pandemic our local churches together were inactive in Hanwell, but now it’s re-building up gradually.

Church Life: It was helpful having Stewards meeting time to time which helps me to prepare the worship service on the pattern based upon – 1[st] Sunday at Acton Hill, 2[nd] Sunday at Hanwell and afternoon service at King’s Hall and the rest of the Sundays according to the need of the Circuit’s Preaching Plan. For me having more than one churches is good to have variety on each Sundays but, I miss out connecting with Church people on the regular basis.

It’s time to celebrate the generous service offered by you all, as Trustees ( Members of the Church Council ), Secretaries, Treasurer, Stewards, Pastoral Visitors, Property & Finance Stewards, Sunday School Leaders, Organists and the people use our premises for various purposes. We have one Pentecostal Church running in our premises every Sunday in the afternoon. I want to give my special thanks to all of you who are volunteering with dedication on different roles and responsibilities in spiritual and social areas.

Church News: The Church life is running smoothly having all the activities in its own space and times. Life of the Church was affected a bit during the pandemic but we are holding few regular events like coffee morning for local community, however we have recently started coffee after the service where we need more volunteers to run it on the regular basis. It gives opportunity to engage in the fellowship. People do have access without any hesitation. Community runs the Soup kitchen to help the homeless on every Thusday morning. Worship service running every Sunday at 11 am and we are having Baptism, Wedding and Funeral service on request. Pastorally, there are few members who are struggling with their ill health, but they do have proper pastoral support and are remembered regularly in our prayers. Members and the community are weekly updated by our HMC News Letter edited and published by Mr Ray who is a Worship Leader and a very committed member of our Church.

3

Circuit: Looking at our Church on the bigger map; Hanwell Methodist Church is part of Ealing Trinity Circuit, London District. Rev Rachel is our Superintendent and having pastoral oversight for Greenford Methodist Church and Northolt Methodist Church. Rev Susan (Minister), having pastoral oversight of Ealing Green ( URC & Methodist LEP ) Church, Kingsdown Methodist Church and Pitshanger Methodist Church. Rev Theresa (Deacon) who serves the community in the whole area of our Circuit, and me having pastoral oversight of Acton Hill ( Methodist & URC LEP ) Church, Hanwell Methodist Church and King’s Hall Church at Southall. To assist the work of the Circuit we have Mr Gerald (p/t Circuit Office Administrator), Mr Will (p/t Finance Administrator), Mr Monty (p/t Property Administrator) and Mrs Mercia (p/t Pastoral Worker for Rev Rachel’s Section).

Circuit is struggling with a smaller number of Circuit Stewards, so, I urge you if any of you have quality of leadership and having new ideas of active leadership, could be willing to join the Circuit Leadership then please speak to me.

District News: Rev Nigel is our new District Chair from Sept 2021 after Rev Michela has moved and became the Assistant Conference Secretary. We had Representative Synods and Ministerial Synod for this connexional year.

The Methodist Conference 2021 has agreed for the same sex marriage in the Methodist Church. However, it’s up to the Minister and the Church (Church Council) to decide whether they be registered for the same sex marriage or not. The conversation is in progress.

At last, but not the least ‘A Big Thank You’ to all of you who are holding and supporting each other in prayers with Christian love, it is my first report in the first year of stationing. You all are always in my prayers. May you have a blessed times as we all are journeying together in the mission of Christ.

Shalom!

Rev Ajay (Presbyter) Minister Hanwell Methodist Church

Stewards' Report

It’s been a busy year for the Stewards. We said goodbye to the Rev Shirlyn in early August and prepared to welcome the Rev Ajay later in the month. After he arrived, for the first 10 days or so, we co-ordinated a rota with the other Churches which Ajay is looking after to ensure that, initially, after his arrival someone from one of his Churches contacted him every day to see if help was needed. We formally welcomed Ajay to be our Minister at the Circuit service on August 29[th] 2021 at Acton Hill.

Weekly services have continued at Hanwell throughout the year with relevant precautions against Covid being taken. We’ll come back to those later.

It has been wonderful that the Sunday School has started again in a regular consistent pattern. This is largely due to Jane volunteering to be the Sunday School leader. We are, of course, very grateful for all the work Mary L. has done with the Sunday School in the past. We hope that she will return at some point in the future.

Since Ajay arrived, the format of the Sunday School has changed with the children leaving the service after the first hymn and coming back at the end of the service to tell the congregation what they have done. This seems a successful format particularly because Jane always ensures the children always have a fantastic activity to take part in. Numbers in the Sunday School are small but variable and did go as high as twelve on Easter Sunday.

There have also been regular parade services with the uniformed organisations – a relationship which we definitely want to nurture.

Serving coffee after the Church service has restarted. Some weeks there is no-one to serve coffee. If that is the case, then often biscuits are still available.

There has been a change in the way the Benevolent collection has been taken. Instead of being taken monthly at the Communion service, the

5

plate is now put out weekly in the Centenary Room for people to give, as they wish.

Triggered by the war in Ukraine, there have also been collections during the past year for refugees. This money was given to All We Can – The Methodist Relief and Development Fund.

With regards to Covid, guided by the Covid Risk Assessment, precautions have, of course, been taken until Church Council decided they could be stopped. Precautions included specific Covid cleaning after each service, increased ventilation, mask wearing and social distancing. Because of Covid, we started routinely opening the gallery for services and it has been a popular place to sit for some people. Covid also meant that there has been an alteration in the format of some services such as the way in which the collection has been taken but these altered arrangements are virtually all back to normal now. Covid also meant that there were changes in the stewards’ duties with, for example, the second steward being needed to take a register or collect the contact details of those attending for Test and Trace purposes. This has now been discontinued.

Covid has also meant that some Church meetings have taken place on Zoom rather than in person at the Church.

The start of Ajay’s Ministry here at Hanwell also coincided with the restart of the hard copy publication of the weekly HMC News. Although the Editor, Ray had been circulating news electronically throughout the pandemic, production of the hard copies of HMC News stopped on March 22[nd] 2020. They restarted on September 19[th] 2021, although people are encouraged to view it electronically, if they can rather than take a hard copy. There are now over 50 people on the electronic HMC News circulation list.

The Church has celebrated the special occasions in our Christian calendar. For example, at Christmas there was a choir for the candlelight carol service and at Easter we had the wonderful Easter cross that was decorated with flowers that the congregation had brought. Our thanks are due to all those who facilitated these occasions by, for example, putting the candleholders up and the Easter Cross in position.

During the past year, after being involved for 76 years, in some way, with doing the Church flowers, Jean gave up doing the flowers. Jean always made sure the flowers looked magnificent. We are very grateful to Jean for her faithful service. There is now a rota for the flowers with Carol being the lead for the rota.

We are grateful to all those who help facilitate the worship in any way at all, Mary B. and Steve on the audio-visual desk and Gareth on the organ. As well as, of course, all those keeping the premises and property in order so that worship can be carried out.

The stewards have also been involved with facilitating the Circuit Day at Hanwell on April 9[th] . Although, unfortunately, attendance at this was adversely affected by Covid, including amongst the stewards.

6

We are also aware that Rev Ajay is running a membership class on June 11th

For the past year, there have been five stewards, Chris, Rita, Michael, and George. It was good news that George was welcomed as a new steward to Hanwell last June. As he is already an experienced Methodist Steward, he has settled in very quickly. Marion has been Senior Steward for the past year.

One of the challenges for the stewards is that during the year, there have been noticeably more local arrangements on the preaching plan. The stewards have tended to take these in turn with help from Jane and the Worship Leaders Ray and Cynthia. It sounds as though this number of Local Arrangements is likely to continue for the foreseeable future

I should like to take this opportunity to thank the Rev Ajay and the stewards for all their work during the year in ensuring that worship can take place at Hanwell Methodist Church. I should also like to thank all those who help with this in any way at all and also the congregation for being so supportive.

With regard to the future, there are many challenges - a key one of which, is the need to increase the size of our congregation. We ignore this at our peril. We need to do all we can to make sure that every single person who comes through the doors of our Church feels welcome, finds what they are spiritually looking for and wants to return.

(May 2022 Marion – Senior Steward)

Pastoral Committee Report

Members and Adherents of Hanwell Methodist Church have continued to be part of one of six Pastoral Groups, the Leaders of which have remained the same for the past year. I will begin my report by saying a huge Thank You to these Leaders – Rita, Suzanne, Cynthia, Mary and Marion – whose care, friendship, visits and prayer for those in their group have been so much appreciated. The pandemic has meant that attendance at Church has been difficult for some of the elderly and vulnerable, who have not felt confident to attend, and also for quite a few who actually contracted Covid, but throughout this period, our Pastoral Leaders have kept in touch with their members. I’m pleased to report that almost everyone is now back at Church. Covid restrictions also resulted in the Christmas visits to the housebound being cancelled, but we are really hoping these can be resumed this coming December.

Membership of the Methodist Church at Hanwell has remained much the same since my last report a year ago, but we were saddened to hear of the passing of Lucille in September, and Esme last month. Lucille had

7

been housebound for 6 years but before that she had attended regularly, and Esme had moved away 25 years ago, but came back every year when she visited her family in Hanwell. We will miss them both. We have had new members though – Ruby and George both transferred their membership to Hanwell, and are now part of a Pastoral Group, as is Jane – all three were former members of Kings Hall Morning congregation, and we are delighted to welcome them. We now have 41 members, and 14 adherents – people who attend Church regularly but are not actual members.

The next Pastoral Meeting will be held in June, the date as yet undecided. If anyone reading this has been attending Church for some time and is not part of a Pastoral Group but would like to be, please do come and see me or any of one of the Pastoral Leaders (if you’re not sure who they are, just look at the Pastoral noticeboard in the Centenary Room (the Church foyer)). It is hoped that discussion at the next meeting will include another Pastoral event, where members of each group will have the opportunity to get together. It doesn’t happen very often, so we’d really like to organize something for the near future.

Distribution of flowers to the sick has always been a big part of pastoral care at Hanwell, and for years was undertaken by Jean. Jean, however, has sadly had to give up her flower duties because of ill health, and I would like to say a huge thank you to her for all the years she has so faithfully carried out this task. Happily, her mantle has been picked up by a team of ladies in the Church, led by Carol, with the result that flowers continue to be given to those who are unwell, or those who simply need to know that they are being thought of during a difficult time.

I cannot conclude this report without mentioning quite a big change at Hanwell! In July we said Goodbye to our Minister, Rev Shirlyn, who had ably chaired our Pastoral Committee for five years, and we wished her well in her new Church at Royal Wootton Basset. We then welcomed our present Minister, Rev Ajay, who has quickly become part of the Hanwell family, and we look forward to his continuing Pastoral leadership in the coming years. (Barbara – Pastoral Secretary)

Finance Report

HMC financial records are held in an accounts management system called Data Developments.

Data Developments was developed for use by churches and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

The Circuit uses Data Developments to maintain its accounts, BUT although I am the circuit Treasurer, I do not manage the accounts system which is maintained by the finance administrator, Will.

8

However, I am getting to know the system and will eventually be able to maintain it, but it will take a considerable amount of time.

The records are not up to date for a variety of reasons including my holiday and so there is a backlog of entries required stretching back to mid-February - this is a great deal of work, several hours at least, which in terms of the time I have available may take several weeks.

We do have a real dilemma regarding the use of Data Developments. If we are to continue using it we need to ensure that we always have someone ready to take over. Although, for various reasons, there is a backlog of work the handover was cooperative. This might not always be the case.

I am seriously considering whether it might not be better to revert to an Excel spreadsheet system, but to make that switch at this stage would involve re-entering nearly 500 records. I’m not yet sure what to recommend, but if I can get on top of the Data Developments system it may be best to make the change at the end of the financial year.

The good news is that we have plenty of money, in excess of £200,000 at the end of April.

Our most immediate priority is to change the correspondence address for the HSBC bank and CFB to the church address.

We also need to change the signatories of the accounts, removing David S. and adding anyone else we think appropriate, particularly me.

This can only be done by the existing signatories.

Stephen

Lettings Report

Bookings officer: Mrs Barbara. Lettings Officer: One-off bookings: Mrs Barbara, Regular licenced groups: Mrs Mary B. (still temporary).

9

Groups no longer running

Our rates are:

We do not offer standard reduced rates for charity or community lets, but our rates are very competitive within our area, and we offer a regular discount of 20% to groups regularly hiring one of our larger halls for 15 or more hours a week or hiring the whole of the premises for a whole day.

See separate Excel spreadsheet for Lettings Income up to the April statement.

(Compiled by Mary L. using data on Excel spreadsheet and Lettings report from 2021).

Property Report

The following are issues that have been undertaken during the past year. Covid has meant the premises have not been used as much, but there still have been regular maintenance issues to resolve and a commitment to plan to carry out longer term developments of the premises.

10

Many thanks are due to the stalwarts of the committee, who deal with many unseen and minor but essential issues. Also, for their care, commitment and diligence in maintaining our Church and its premises to such a high standard.

(Paul – Secretary Property and Finance Committee)

Wednesday Cofee Morning Report

We opened our coffee morning in Hanwell last September, aware that there were some people who were on their own and hadn’t been able to see anyone during the pandemic. We had no idea if anyone would venture

11

inside the church, but we took the plunge and made sure that everything was safe to go ahead.

We spread out six tables, which had plenty of room around each one, and obeyed all the rules that the government had issued. We were so glad that we did it, as every Wednesday it’s such a joy seeing those who have been able to come out to have some coffee, a slice of cake and most importantly, a chat with a volunteer.

Gill is busy in the kitchen brewing up a selection of different flavours of tea and makes proper coffee. Suzanne cuts and serves a choice from three types of homemade cakes. Our other volunteers help by serving the tea and coffee and having conversations with the visitors.

I stand outside and encourage people to come in. Sometimes they can be more hesitant, but after some kind words and understanding of what we do here, they often come inside. Our coffee morning is free, but we have had many donations towards what we do.

I have some lovely chats with people who pass by and enquire. They have all said what a wonderful job we are doing here. It’s so heartening when the visitors leave and tap me on the shoulder to say: “Thank you, I haven’t seen anyone for ages to talk to.” This means so much to them. So now we have regulars that come every week.

We have some people that ask if they can just come in to pray, which is also really nice, and as Ajay is here most Wednesdays, he is on hand if people need a prayer said for them.

We hand out cake for those in a hurry or have come by from the food bank across the road. I’m so saddened looking across the road and seeing how many people are waiting for it to open.

I now realise how many local people need a helping hand, and we hope that our coffee morning can be of help too. If you’re passing by on a Wednesday morning, please pop in for refreshments as we will be happy to welcome those who haven’t been. Better yet, have a think about volunteering, whether it’s making cakes, helping to serve hot drinks or to just speak to those who may be lonely in these times.

Flower Report

Having recently taken overall co-ordination of the church flowers after all the wonderful years of service by Jean, Suzanne and I are trying to coordinate with a “light touch”. We have 2 Peace Lilies that can be displayed when there are no fresh flowers and on communion Sundays or any special services, we have a rota of people who will bring their own ideas of an arrangement. This can be formal or informal. So far this is working well and I am hoping that more and more people will get involved and bring their creativity to this part of church life.

The flower fund has been added to the general church funds and I wanted to ask if we can have a cash float of £50 if this is needed?

Any ideas welcome

Many thanks

JMA Report

The Junior Mission for All (JMA) is part of the Methodist Church worldwide mission programme. It was created so that children would be able to learn about and support the mission of the Church in a fun, creative and engaging way. JMA collectors raise funds to support the Methodist Church’s World Mission Fund and Mission in Britain.

We have a small number of collectors who raised just over £230 in the last financial year. We are hoping to hold the JMA Commissioning service and have a re-launch in the Autumn to try and involve more children.

Christian Aid Report

13

For many years we have supported Christian Aid by fund raising during Christian Aid week. In 2021 the Coronavirus pandemic affected our normal methods of fund raising. The Christian Aid sponsored walk “Circle the City” was cancelled and many people were not happy about doing door-to door collections. Despite this Hanwell Methodist raised £392.40.

(Mary)

Sunday School Report

I am pleased to be leading our Junior Church here at Hanwell, as children are truly the foundation stones, of a church that wants to grow.

I was brought up in the Methodist faith and became a member when I was just 18 - nearly 50 years ago. Throughout that time, I worshiped at Kings Hall Southall and after marrying and moving away, continued worshipping at Wesley Methodist Church in High Wycombe. After the children were born, we both finally transferred our membership to Union Baptist Church High Wycombe, where I became a leader of one of the Junior Church groups there.

Looking after my mum in her later years brought me back to Southall and after the closure of our church building, here to Hanwell, where we have been made the most welcome. By being willing to lead the young people here, is a way of giving back.

The numbers of children I see on a Sunday can vary enormously. However, I don't think anyone could have prepared us for serving 12 young people on Easter Sunday. It was a joy and a blessing albeit a slightly scrambled affair. Thanks to everyone who joined in and supported the mornings activities.

On a "normal" Sunday we generally have three to four young people who vary in ages from 2 - 9. This makes delivery of the content often quite challenging, although the Roots subscription we have is very comprehensive. However, it always focusses on the New Testament lectionary reading, so I sometimes create something new so we can appreciate stories and Psalms from the Old Testament.

There will be some Sundays in the coming summer months when I won't be able to be in Hanwell. I am hoping other church members will be able to keep the continuity going, as I think that is what is important. I will prepare and print all the necessary resources for the weeks I know I can't be there and I am sure that, as a team, we will work together.

What the future holds I do not know. It's in God's plan where my husband and I finally decide to properly retire to, but until then I will do my best to serve God in this way if this is what the church wants.

- Family & Fund raising Group Report

It appears that the last F&FR report I gave was exactly two years ago (May 2020) which covered half of 2019 and half of 2020. We were then at the beginning of the first lockdown and we still had illusions of getting back to normal by the end of the year!

Our Church opened its doors permanently from Easter Sunday 2021, but the resumption of any social / fund-raising activities was much further delayed because of the close contact involved, especially with the big events. In short, no Easter Egg Hunts and no Barn Dances since 2019.

We did manage to squeeze in a Winter Craft Market in November 2021 with fewer tables spread over more rooms, a one-way system, lots of hand gel and more ventilation. We did not know how many people would want to come out to a potentially busy environment but in the end we had a good, steady turn-out - maybe because everybody wanted to make sure that they were ready for Christmas in case it was pulled again and/or maybe because there were very few other Christmas fairs around and/or maybe we are just becoming a must-do event... Organising the WCM starts before the summer holidays and demands many (wo)man hours - a big thank-you again to all those who helped it happen, in whatever way they could. Without diminishing anybody's input, I have to say a particularly big thank-you to Chris for again allowing me to volunteer him for organising the catering, and for all his input in helping decorate the Centenary Room, the Church, the main hall and this time the middle hall. A big thank-you also to George from the Southall congregation who donated the delicious curries. We made just under £1,000.

Covid and its lockdown put an abrupt end to all our activities but did give us a chance to re-evaluate what we have been doing and what is important to us both in our home lives and at Church. For well over a year we met for coffee via Zoom but these meetings came to an end in the summer of 2021 as we planned to open up the Church Centenary Room for coffee, not only for ourselves but also for our community. Because of the vagaries of Covid, the Wednesday coffee mornings at the Church did not start until 15th September but have been going from strength to strength ever since. We were open throughout Christmas and the New Year and the school holidays. We have regular regulars, irregular regulars, and one-off visitors. We have some of our own Church members attending and some of their friends, plus members of other Churches, hall users, food bank visitors, Health Centre visitors and general passers-by. We have been much appreciated especially by those who live alone or cannot afford to go out regularly for a coffee and chat with friends. We do not charge but the donations jar regularly has £20+ in it which covers our costs. We have a band of regular helpers and others who will help out now and again in an emergency but we welcome anybody else who would

15

like to 'learn the ropes' or bake a cake - luckily we have some keen bakers because we now get through 4-5 cakes per week!

There is no separate Wednesday Club report this year as this is one of the activities that seems to have fallen by the wayside over the last two years. Some of us feel it may have served its purpose and should now be retired but as we have not had a F&FR meeting for ages, I would be interested to know what other people think.

There is also no Grandparents & Toddlers report this year as this remains closed. There have been plans to start it up again but they have always been knocked back either by the imposition of new Covid restrictions or the lifting of them, as many Grandparents are clinically vulnerable while their grandchildren are a possible source of infection. We do miss the toddlers who used to come to us but they are no longer toddling so we will have to start from scratch when we do start up with a big advertising campaign.

I have heard some mutterings in Church about starting up our meetings again so it would be useful to know who would like to come along and what you would like to see happening over the next 12 months. Maybe it would be a good time to start up again after the GCM and maybe the enforced break has filled us with renewed energy!

(Gill - on behalf of Family & Fund-raising group)

3 rd Hanwell Rainbows Report

From having 2 left following lockdown in Rainbows we are now back to being full with a waiting list. The Rainbows have been enjoying earning skills builders' badges and activities such as building dens, carrying out science experiments and trying to cook things over a tea light! (The marshmallows were the most popular). The girls have really built their confidence in their skills and making friends with each other. As sadly a fair few units have closed, we have girls from all around Ealing, but mostly local Hanwell schools (and a home schooled child).

Guiding has now changed and we now can take 4 year olds into the unit. We don't have the extra leaders for that at the moment so will have to wait and see.

(Cerys)

2 nd Hanwell Brownies Report

We’ve had a busy term completing badges and 6 older Brownies are near to completing their Brownie Gold Award. We had a sleepover in February at Paxmead Guiding Riverside base and were very lucky with the weather allowing us to spend lots of time outside. The theme was 'I'm a Brownie

16

get me out of here'. There were bush tucker trials to win stars for gold coins to take home at the end of the weekend. We also had the very funny magician entertainer Jelly Kelly on Saturday evening following our 'banquet'. The Brownies all took turns in helping to prepare meals, lay tables and clean the holiday home. As well as fitting in baking, crafts, a walk along the river and games (with some sleep thrown in). We are hoping we can find more help to open the Guide unit again as there is limited space anywhere else for the older girls to go / or it is not in walking distance.

(Cerys)

5 th Hanwell (Methodist) Scout Group Report

We continue to have a strong group, with over 70 young people enjoying regular scouting activities:

All sections have been full all year, with a long waiting list!

We have a team of nine fantastically dedicated Leaders who are enjoying getting back to normal activities after the pandemic.

We re-started face-2-face sessions as soon as restrictions were lifted and have already done a good range of camps and adventurous activities.

Last summer, before we were allowed to do residential events, we did some outdoor-pursuits days and a variety of other visits and outings. Then, in September, 40 Scouts and Cubs did a two-night camp (our first for two years!), with the Scouts camping again later in the Autumn.

This spring we have already held a sleepover for our Beavers, as well as another two camps for our Scouts and Cubs (our April camp involved lots of challenging activities including kayaking on the Grand Union canal, archery and some significant hiking).

Our Scouts recently took part in a camping competition called Totem – they came 4[th] . And we have another camp coming up in June with over 50

17

of our young people signed up to take part in climbing, karting, caving and much much more!

As well as managing camps and events, our Leaders continue to work really hard to give our young people a broad and balanced programme week in, week out. Huge thanks to them all.

We are proud that eighteen of our young people achieved Chief Scout awards over the last year (the highest awards for each age-group), which were presented at our St George’s event in Walpole Park (in the presence of the Mayor, the Deputy Lieutenant, and our local MPs):

We are grateful for the Church’s ongoing sponsorship and support and were pleased to meet the new Minister. It has been nice to reinstate parade services post-covid; we look forward to the next one!

For Hanwell methodist Church the auditor’s report is still pending, therefore we are unable to answer the question around areas of concern at this time but hope to rectify as soon as possible.

In order to submit the annual return, I have answered ‘no’ but will revisit if any areas of concern are identified as part of the audit.

Many thanks,

Treasurer
