REFERENCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS
Charity Name ChristChurch Tilehurst Registered Charity Number 1169691 Principal Office 26 Brooksby Road Tilehurst Reading RG31 6LY
Charity Trustees
Daniel Dwelly (Elder/Pastor) Graham Newton (Elder) James Muldoon
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE, MANAGEMENT
ChristChurch Tilehurst is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and governed by a constitution with trustees elected by charity members in accordance with our Church Handbook.
The Church Handbook also requires the elders of the Church must be trustees, though trustees do not have to be elders. Mr James Muldoon is the only serving trustee who is not also an elder. This has given greater accountability for the charity and the flexibility to ensure CCT continues to operate with the required number of trustees with proper expertise.
The elders have met on a regular basis through this year to provide oversight of the church activities and discuss both pastoral care and ministry business in light of our purpose, objectives and aims.
The members have met quarterly to discuss church business, assess the finances and vote on church matters. This year began with a membership of 58 individuals, growing to 61 . There was 1 membership transfer to another church.
ChristChurch Tilehurst is also a member of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC, fiec.org.uk), a network organisation supporting independent churches across the UK. The FIEC has no governing authority or responsibility for the charity but offers a supporting role, facilitating partnerships with other churches in the network, running training and conferences, and providing advice.

AIMS, OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
AIMS
The aims and objectives or ChristChurch Tilehurst (CCT) are set out in the charity’s governing constitution which states that the purposes of the church are;
The advancement of the Christian faith in accordance with the Doctrinal Basis of Faith primarily but not exclusively within Tilehurst, Reading and the surrounding neighbourhood; and such other charitable purposes as shall, in the opinion of the members of the Church in general meeting, put into practice the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ in accordance with the Doctrinal Basis of Faith provided that the advancement of such purposes must be undertaken in a manner that is consistent with the Doctrinal Distinctives and Ethical Statements as may be adopted and amended by the Church from time to time in accordance with the provisions of the Church Handbook.
OBJECTIVES
CCT is committed to its objective of furthering the Christian faith in Tilehurst, Reading and beyond. When planning activities, the elders and trustees have considered the Commission’s guidance on public benefit and have sought to enable anyone in our reach to live out the Christian faith within the local church community or have the opportunity to explore Christianity for themselves.
Many of the activities we engage in to achieve our objectives are described in this report, but especially include Sunday worship services.
The church also pro-actively engages with the wider community at several events through the year, including community fayres or by celebrating key festivals and cultural events (including Christmas, Easter, Harvest, All-Hallows Eve: ‘Light Parties’, Remembrance Sunday).
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
WORSHIP AND PRAYER
The focal point of church life is our weekly Sunday morning services hosted at Westwood Farm Junior School at 10.30am. The services aim to provide an engaging time of worship through contemporary and traditional music, prayers, Bible readings, the Lord’s Supper, baptisms and sermons. These services have been open to all and provide a good opportunity for the general public to observe and participate in church life or connect with our Christian community.
We have had the privilege of worshipping together as a mixed group of people from different backgrounds, nationalities and economic status. It has been our aim to ensure a very warm welcome to everyone attending our services, especially visitors and newcomers and whether they are Christian believers or not.

PREACHING MINISTRIES.[1] The Bible is a primary element to our church life and remains a central component of our worship and practice. Through the Bible, we believe Jesus speaks to us, encouraging and challenging us to live our lives for him. In this year, the preaching and Bible ministry have covered:
-
‘Acts: the Jesus Movement’ – Throughout 2024 we have continued with an expository sermon series through the book of Acts. This book covers the first 30+ years of the church’s existence after Jesus’ ascension and shows us how the message of Jesus and his followers grew and spread through the world at that time. This is an exciting book, with much to teach Christians about the power of the gospel and for us to learn from those early Christians as we seek to live out our faith in our own context today.
-
“Acts has taught us so much…The glory of Christ, the power of the Spirit, the wonder of the gospel, the inspiration of Christian witness, the beauty of a united, caring church, the excitement of light overcoming darkness, and the joy of salvation. It’s the story of the Jesus Movement, the Gospel Empire of Jesus, growing in all the world, despite resistance,
through faithful Christians preaching the same old gospel, and fulfilling God’s plan.”
– Pastor Dan Dwelly, Sermon: ‘Acts: Gospel Empire’, Nov 28[th] 2024
• ‘Parables of the Kingdom: Matthew 13’ – a small team of men in the church (pictured in a planning meeting) who are willing and able to preach took on their own mini-series in the summer looking at some of Jesus’ parables about the kingdom of God in Matthew chapter 13. The vivid imagery Jesus uses in these parables were particularly engaging for our children who were also present for these sermons.
- Christmas 2024 – we also enjoyed a short Advent Series called ‘Christmas shows us the way things really are.’ It aimed to show how the Christmas story offers us keys to understanding reality and meaning. It reveals the truth that God is real and can be known as he appears in the Christmas story. It tells us that humans really do matter as Jesus becomes one of us. It exposes the real problem with the world: human sin. And the only way back to reality, meaning and life, through knowing Jesus as Saviour.
1 Many of our sermons are recorded and available to listen to on our website: www.ChristChurchtilehurst.org.uk/sermons
5
“Friends, if you’re looking for a way back—to meaning, to purpose, to morality, to life—then Christmas is giving you a vision, a message and a quest. The vision is that the world is far more spectacular and wonderful when you see God in it... Will you dare to see the way things really are?” – Pastor Dan Dwelly, Sermon: ‘The Way Back’, Carol Service, Dec 22[nd] 2024.
SPECIAL SERVICES: As well as these sermon series, our Sunday gatherings also included:
-
All-Age services particularly aimed at children and families. These services usually take place at Easter, Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas, as well as during school term breaks.
-
Our Mission Sunday (June 2024) is an annual service when we focus on the ways we are seeking to support mission around the world. This year we were pleased to invite Pete Killingley from CARE (Christian Action, Research and Education) as our guest speaker. Pete shared with us about the work of CARE as it engages with the world of UK politics and then preached to us on being a ‘voice for the voiceless’ from Proverbs 31 and seeking justice for the oppressed. He also led an excellent seminar for us in the afternoon on ‘How to vote at a time of political disillusionment’. This seminar tied in well with the upcoming general election and helped us think about politics and voting from a Biblical perspective. We were also pleased to partner with another church, Coley Park Baptist Church, who hosted us and to welcome several other attendees to the seminar from other churches in the town whom we had invited.
-
Other guest speakers included Dr Anthony Royle, principal of Kings Evangelical Divinity School and Dr Amit Sharma who brought a message on ‘Dealing With Trauma’ for a special Mental Health and Christianity service.
BAPTISMAL SERVICE – A very special highlight in our year was hosting some baptisms on June 23[rd] 2024. Three young people were baptised on the school grounds thanks to a loan of a portable baptistry from Reading Family Church. It was particularly special to host these baptisms on the school site where we regularly meet.
PRAYER MEETINGS. Enabling opportunity for corporate prayer has remained a key priority for the elders and a vital part of church life. We have hosted a monthly prayer meeting on Sunday evenings through 2024-2025. We also hosted a ‘Week of Prayer’ in January 2025, arranging several extra prayer meetings for the church, as well as providing a guide for personal prayer and fasting.
CHRISTMAS SERVICES. We enjoyed another full Christmas programme this year. This included a Christmas Ceilidh which our wider community and other guests were invited to. We also enjoyed spreading some Christmas cheer singing carols on a Saturday morning outside some local shops. Our traditional carol service was also another lovely occasion, as well as our Christmas Day service, both of which attracted a number of visitors.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN’S WORK
We are especially glad to welcome many young families to ChristChurch each Sunday and aim to serve our children in several ministries. Our hope is to ensure our life as a church includes and nurtures children and their families.
SUNDAY SCHOOL & CRECHE. Sunday School at ChristChurch has continued to meet in termtime, led by Rachel Newton, Jenny Taylor and Penny Runnalls. There are two groups, one for 4-7s, consisting of approximately 10 children, and 7-11s, which is a group of about 14 children. We have 9 teachers and 5 helpers plus 2 junior helpers. We are very grateful for all who are involved, although with our growing numbers, further additions to the team are always welcome.
We use The Good News Company’s ‘Click’ teaching scheme. Sessions typically begin with the two groups meeting together for songs and prayer before going to their respective rooms. The remaining time consists of the teaching of the Bible lesson and a memory verse, supported by a range of activities: quizzes, games, drama and craft.
Throughout the year the children have readily participated in Sunday School and as they have become teenagers, some have joined the team as junior helpers.
Penny Runnalls
CONNECT/UNITED. We’re blessed with a rich, dynamic and faith-hungry youth at ChristChurch Tilehurst. Since January 2025, I’ve had the pleasure of leading this ministry with a team of 10 other leaders and helpers. We have roughly equal young people to helpers.
For Connect (11-14yrs), we have been digging into God’s word during the service - using the Scripture Union’s Grid book as a guide.
For United (14-18yrs), we have had a crack team of volunteers leading monthly sessions about how to be a Christian in everyday life, the role of mission and tackling some of the larger questions about life and faith. These meetings are kindly hosted at members’ homes after the morning service.
Other activities with our youth have included a Movie Night, a Picnic Walk, a bonfire and Christmas party.
All volunteers feel blessed engaging with youth on key Biblical and life topics raised. It’s a real privilege to go deeper into these topics and explore them afresh. Thanks goes to our wonderful team of volunteers and their dedication to the spiritual development of ChristChurch Tilehurst’s youth.
Long may Jesus’s name be glorified in this way!

SAFEGUARDING.[2] Safeguarding remains a vital part of the life and ministry of ChristChurch Tilehurst. It is both a legal responsibility and a gospel-shaped commitment to care for the vulnerable and protect all who are part of our church family.
Over the past year, our safeguarding and complaints policies were reviewed and updated. To make them more accessible, condensed guidance booklets were produced as quick reference guides for leaders, volunteers, and members. Safeguarding training was delivered for both church members and youth team members, with additional guidance and support provided to ministry teams throughout the year to help embed safeguarding into everyday practice.
2 A copy of our Safeguarding Policy is available online: https://www.ChristChurchtilehurst.org.uk/whats-on/events/children-youth/
9
All new workers serving with children, young people, or vulnerable adults completed the necessary DBS checks and safer recruitment procedures, ensuring they were properly vetted and supported for their roles. We also continue to benefit from external safeguarding support through our partnership with Christian Safeguarding Services , whose expertise provide wise additional support when needed.
It has been encouraging to see an increasing awareness of safeguarding responsibilities across different ministries. Engagement with training has also been positive, and a healthy culture of care and openness continues to develop within our church family.
Looking ahead, our priorities include providing refresher training for all leaders and volunteers and strengthening communication of safeguarding policies and reporting routes for the whole congregation. Above all, we remain committed to making ChristChurch Tilehurst a safe and welcoming place where the love of Christ is shown through care, respect, and protection for all.
Hannah Martin (Designated Safeguarding Lead)
FELLOWSHIP EVENTS AND PASTORAL CARE
The elders have continued to provide pastoral care for the congregation through visitation and counselling. It has also been encouraging to see how church members have continued to care and support one another too, showing Christ-like love and compassion. We aim to offer a number of opportunities and events through the year to enable the church community to spend time together and build relationships.
GROWTH GROUPS. These are smaller groups in the church meeting in-person on a fortnightly basis for prayer, support, encouragement, and Bible teaching. We are especially grateful for the team of volunteer leaders who have led these groups. These have been a great encouragement to the members and where we have seen growth in Christian maturity.

TEA & TOTS. Tea & Tots continues to be an encouragement to parents with little ones, with fortnightly meet ups in our homes. We said goodbye to quite a few older ones at the end of the summer but welcomed three new babies this year! We pray for each other and really appreciate the mid-week contact and opportunity to support each other through parenthood.
We have hosted a couple of coffee mornings to share fellowship with all generations in our church family and these have been a blessed time.

SUMMER FEST . Another highlight has been a musical event in September 2024 called Summer Fest hosted at Westwood Farm School. The event included live music, face painting, a bouncy castle, collective worship, carnival-style games, a prayer tent, and even an ice-cream van. It was a brilliant day of fun and fellowship for all the family. We were also glad to welcome along several visitors and family members as well.

MEN’S BREAKFASTS . Beginning in February 2025, we launched a new monthly meeting for men. The aim was to provide opportunity for men in our church community to build relationships with others and encourage one another. We gathered on a Saturday morning for breakfast and spent time discussing some scripture and praying together. The response to these has been positive and we intend to keep the breakfasts going into the new year.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, EVANGELISM AND MISSION
Sharing the message of Jesus Christ has remained a key priority for the church during this year and we have been encouraged by some of the opportunities God has given us. These include our Sunday morning services when we often receive visitors, some of whom are not Christians, and when we seek to faithfully proclaim the good news about life in Jesus every week.
As well as these services, we can highlight some other key opportunities:
SCHOOLS WORK. We have enjoyed investing in local schools especially Westwood Farm Junior School where we hire a hall for our regular Sunday worship. Our pastor has been invited to take assemblies there at Easter, Harvest and Christmas and also on the theme of ‘truth’. We have also supported the School’s PTA with another fayre, running their popular BBQ. Partnering with a Christian School worker trust called Reach was another encouragement. Reach run a ‘Pit Stop’ for staff and we helped to supply some cakes as well as have our pastor join the team serving them. This ministry is a highlight for the staff, who often comment on how much they look forward to seeing those “Christians with cakes!”. These have all been great opportunities to meet staff and pupils and share a Christian message in schools. This contact sometimes leads to other opportunities when our pastor, Dan, has met pupils and their families outside the school setting, strengthening our positive Christian presence in the community.

LIGHT PARTY . In October 2024 a Light Party was hosted at Westwood Farm Junior School. As an alternative celebration to Halloween, the Light Party was open to all but aimed at families and children up to age 11. The evening included crafts, games, refreshments, sparklers and a short message by Dan about the Christian faith. The event was very well attended with over 40 children coming and many from the church helping to ensure the event ran smoothly.

TORCH & READIFOOD. We have been pleased to continue with our support and involvement with the Torch Help hub, whose work has continued to grow and expand in the Reading area. Torch has provided us with some brilliant opportunities for reaching out to people we could not have otherwise met, some of whom have now begun to regularly attend church. This year, we have had a couple of opportunities to help clients in Tilehurst with some significant gardening maintenance.
GOOD NEWS FOR TILEHURST MAGAZINE. For the past four years, we have created and distributed thousands of magazines to our community—often at Christmas time. This year, our Christmas edition was packed full of content, including personal and heartfelt stories from church members, a gospel-focused article from our pastor, a tree ornament craft, a chocolate truffle recipe, two interest pieces (one on a local area of wild beauty under threat, and another from a meteorologist about the chances of a white Christmas), children's activities, a 'song surgery' of Mary, Did You Know, information about local charities and support, and invitations to our services, exploring faith course, and ceilidh!
6000 copies of a 24-page magazine were given out to friends, family members, the school we meet at, and neighbouring houses. It's a fantastic opportunity for us to remind people that we're here if they ever want to visit or ask for support, while presenting them with the lifegiving hope of the gospel. Seeing the stories and input from real people, who live in and around Tilehurst, adds a level of connection that would otherwise be missing from a simple flyer-drop. The magazine is professionally designed and printed—which does take up a large chunk of our outreach budget—but we believe the quality of both the content and the finished product is equally important if we want people to read and keep it. We hope they see how important this message is—that we have spent the time and money to ensure they received a copy of Good News for Tilehurst !
Many members have had good conversations with those they've handed them out to, especially if they are personally featured in it, and a number of people have come to the church as a result. We’re praying for lasting impact as we continue to produce these magazines faithfully and regularly, knowing they reflect who we are as a church family, Jesus’ love for the lost, and our longing for what he will do in our community.

EXPLORE FAITH COURSES . We have been pleased to host at least one course for people who are not Christians yet or new to church. This year, We have run a Christianity Explored Course but offer others as well. Through video presentations, Bible studies and set questions, these courses provide participants with an interactive and informal opportunity to discover the good news about Jesus for themselves.
PRO-LIFE WORK. Pastor Dan Dwelly has been active among a local network of Christian pro-life supporters who have ee Fh ee conducted some educational outreach in B\ —_ -— Ye i , : the Reading town centre. Using poster Se Vor Aen boards, displays and literature, the team seeks to initiate conversations with the public about abortion with a view to changing opinion and sharing the good news about Jesus. There are often great conversations, when some have changed their mind or been challenged to think more about this topic. Others have taken information for post-abortion support. Though some oppose this work, we are often struck by the many who express support and appreciation for our efforts too.
READING FESTIVAL – STREET PASTORS. Our pastor has also had the opportunity to join the Reading Street Pastors who run some welfare tents on the Reading music festival site. Each year, thousands of people come to Reading for the festival and the Street Pastors are able to serve them. A volunteer team of almost 100 people made up of Christians from churches across the region are able to
offer a safe, warm and comfortable space on the camp site for the revellers. This has provided many opportunities to share the Christian faith when asked about it, but also allowed us to help people who find themselves in need, including being intoxicated, separated from friends, or anxious.
MISSIONS & AID. The Apostle Paul was thankful for the Philippians' partnership in spreading the gospel, the Macedonian churches' generosity towards the poor Christians in Jerusalem, and he hoped for the believers in Rome to help his future plans to take the gospel to Spain. Partnership is in our spiritual pedigree.
We were blessed by Paul Chatfield visiting in July 2024. He pastors the International Church in Turin, Italy; Susie, his wife, and their dog have recently moved to a house outside the suburbs. James and Joey Knewell continue to be much in our prayers and giving (£1200). They visited us in February 2025, sharing about the work and its possible expansion. We planned for a small work party to go there in September 2025. In March 2025 Malcolm Clegg
17
came with Alina and Svitlana to speak about Central Eurasian Partners' (CEP) work in Eastern Europe, particularly Ukraine. We are blessed to continue to pray for Michael & Steph Baldwin in Eurasia, giving them £2400.
We facilitate weekly donations to Norcot Pantry (a food bank hosted by Norcot Mission Church); we also wish to help neighbours in our area.
Besides the above, many pray for Luke and Claudette Baldwin in Georgia; others support the RAHAB work, members are directly involved in the work of the Norwegian Mission Society, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Prison Fellowship, and Street Pastors.
Whilst Paul wrote to the 'local' "church of God that is in Corinth", he wanted to remind them that they were not super-special-unique; they were a manifestation of a bigger community: "all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." It is good for us, as CCT, to remember and partner with others in the universal church!
Charlie Allison
VOLUNTEERS
The elders and trustees would like to thank all our volunteers who work incredibly hard to make CCT a welcoming and supportive Christian community. We believe the church is like a body, with different members providing different gifts and abilities and it has been fantastic to see them serving each other with these gifts. We would especially like to thank Mrs Hannah Martin, our Safeguarding Lead, Mr Louie Over, our Church Treasurer, and Jan Broady and Keith Munday, our Health and Safety team.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The church is supported through the generous voluntary giving of its members and congregants. It has been a particular encouragement that the number of regular givers to ChristChurch has continued to grow year-on-year. As a church, we recognise the generous provision afforded to us by our Heavenly Father and the privilege we have as stewards of this to facilitate our objective of furthering the Christian Faith here in Tilehurst, Reading and beyond.
Throughout 2024/25, this generosity has allowed us to support both local and international mission, in addition to many local events including (i) baptisms, (ii) Easter and Summer Festivals, (iii) Christmas magazine publication and (iv) Light party.
As at 31 March 2025 the charity’s general funds stood at £92,483. The trustees continue to implement a policy of maintaining a balance of unrestricted funds greater than or equal to approximately three months of operating costs for the charity, wherever possible. This is designed to support the ongoing operation of the charity in the event of fluctuations in donation income, upon which the charity relies. Three months is considered sufficient time for the trustees to identify an enduring decline in giving and take action to control costs or generate income as required.
Louie Over, Church Treasurer
