TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 17 OCTOBER 2025
This Annual Report and Financial Statements have been prepared following the Guidance of the Charity Commission for England and Wales on the content and presentation of Receipts and Payments Accounts.
The Board of Trustees has chosen to use a Receipts and Payments Account as permitted under Section 133 of the Charity Act 2011 as:

Gross income does not exceed £250,000

The NJCT Constitution does not require an Accruals Account
-
The Trust has neither significant non-cash Assets nor Investments
-
The Trustees have claimed no expenses in relation to meetings and governance during the period of reporting

A full list of all 3 bank transactions, including dates, bank statement reference number and nature of transaction, was copied to all Trustees and the CEO
In view of all these particulars, the Board of Trustees has determined that an Independent Examination of the Trust’s finances is sufficient safeguard for the year ending 17 October 2025, given the simplicity and size of the Financial Statements.
At a Trustees Meeting held on 17 November 2025, the Trustees agreed the Annual Report comprising progress during the financial period to 17 October 2025 and the Financial Overview, including the Financial Statements.
The Trustees also voted unanimously to support the following proposition, in line with the Charity Commission’s Guidance.
“The Trustees agree that a full Audit is not required for the 17 October 2025 Accounts.”

OUR MISSION
Our object is the promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit, particularly but not exclusively with respect to Britain’s African Caribbean Community and those from the wider Commonwealth as well as to broadcast the hidden histories of which people of all age groups and cultures in the United Kingdom are typically unaware and which it is important for them to know.
PERPETUATION
The Trust continues to hold the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in honour of African and Caribbean military personnel on Windrush Square. Additionally, there was a continuation of pledged funds following the unveiling of the Windrush & Commonwealth NHS Nurses and Midwives Statue.
OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
During the financial period to 17 October 2025 , the Trust is proud to report on the installation of Seventeen commemorative plaques. These included plaques to:

Linda Lewis (September 2024) was a pioneering British Singer Songwriter, who in the 1970s became the first Black British born female artist to have a top 10 hit in the UK charts. Her chart success was not just limited to the UK making history both in Europe and Australia. Her plaque was installed in Chiswick at her former address in Arlington Park Mansions where she lived between 1971 – 1973.

Marcus and Amy Jacques Garvey, Ladipo Solanke, and Jomo Kenyetta (October 2024). This 24 inch plaque opened UK BHM on the morning of 1[st] October 2024. It was placed on a 3 metre pole and installed on Castletown Road, Barons Court. All 4 personalities lived at 57 Castletown Road and different times between April 1928 and October 1929. The historic plaque was delivered in partnership with Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

Nubian Life Resource Centre Ltd (October 2024). A brass plaque was placed at Nubian Life Resource Centre Ltd, Ellerslie Road, Shepherds Bush. It was to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the centre catering or the African and Caribbean elderly. The plaque was also delivered in partnership with Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

Benjamin Zephania (October 2024) was a Birmingham born poem who became a national treasure. He was a wrter, activist, actor, musician and professor of creative writing. His plaque was installed at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. The plaque reopened after it was during Covid and then refurbishments.

Billy Waters (November 2024) this was a second and revised plaque to 18[th] century musician Billy Waters. The plaque was installed the Runnymead Trust’s listed building just of New Oxford Street in central London on the site where Billy once lived with his wife and family.

Walter Tull (December 2024) This was the second plaque to pioneering football and army captain Walter Tull. It was placed on a new apartment block called Walter Tull House in Haringey, and the plaque’s unveiling officially opened the new site.

Larry Gains (December 2024) was a pioneeringboxer who became British Empire Heavyweight Boxing Champion and a WWII army sergeant. He was denied fighting for the world heavy title because of a colour bar, but also ironically beat two of the boxers that later went on the hold that crown. His plaque was unveiled in Southend-on-sea at the site of his former gym.

Smiley Culture (February 2025) was a singer, producer and pioneering MC. He helped to pioneer the style of “fast chat” internationally, and was the first of the genre to have chart success using the style of MC-ing. His plaque was installed at the estate he lived as youth, Temple Court, Wandsworth Road.

Marcus Garvey (March 2025) is a Jamaican national hero who has been described as the most important Black leader of the last 100 years. His influence spanned the entire globe including the US, where he had a profound impact. On 25[th] March 1917 he gave his first US public lecture in the city of Atlanta at Big Bethel Church. A black and gold NJ plaque, usually reserved for unique historical events, was PERMANENTLY installed at Big Bethel Church in Atalanta. It was the Trust’s third US plaque

Dr Aaron Gayle (April 2025) Although very little is known about Dr Aaron Gayle, he was considered a community legend in the borough of Haringey. He used to practice medicine as well as being an advocate for social justice before tragedy struck, losing his wife and family in a fire. He suffered a nervous breakdown from which he never fully recovered. His plaque was also placed on a new apartment block in partnership with Haringey Council called Aaron Gayle Court. The plaque’s unveiling officially opened the new site.

Dr Beryl Gilroy (June 2025) was the first Black woman head teacher in London. She was also a writer, psychotherapist who pioneered multi-cultural education in Britain. She also co-founded the influential Camden Black Sisters. Her plaque was placed at a private school in Edgware called the North London Collegiate School, where her husband’s mother also went to.

Access Housing (June 2025 ) was the first Black Housing Association founded in the UK. The association started of with 13 self-funded houses in Birmingham completed between 1976 and 1977. A blue plaque was installed on one of the original 13 homes which belong to Keith Johnson, one of the original founders.

Diane Charlemagne (June 2025) was a Mancunian singer who was the lead vocalist with a number of Manchester based bands like 52[nd] Street, Urban Cookie Collective, Goldie and Moby. Her plaque was placed at St Mary’s Primary school in Moss side where she was a former student.

Daddy Vego (August 2025) aka VonBarrington Adams was a pioneering Reggae promoter, community activist and harmoniser. He was a “selector” and “operator” in the 1960s for one of the UK’s first ever sound systems – which had a residency at the Roaring 20s in London’s West End. He went on to found the People’s Sound System as well the world famous record shop in Ladbroke Grove, People’s Sound record shop, where his blue plaque was installed in August 2025. The unveiling of the plaque also opened the 2025 Notting Hill Carnival.

Saint Hadrian (September 2025). One of the most unique plaque unveilings ever witnessed in the UK. In September 2025, 12 unique plaques were unveiled on the outer wall of Canterbury Ruins. The site is listed as well as a UNESCO world Heritage site. All 12 personalities had a connection with monastery at Canterbury. 11 of the plaques were the responsibility of the Canterbury Society and the Canterbiury Commemorative Society. But the most famous of all the plaques, was the one to Saint Hadrian, and that plaque was the sole responsibility of NJCT. Saint Hadrian was the 7[th] century saint from North Africa who is credited with help to legitimise Christianity in England.

Marika Sherwood (September 2025). A brass plaque was placed on the wall of Canterbury ruins just underneath the Saint Hadrian plaque. This was done as a tribute the historian and activist Marika Sherwood, also a personal friend of NJCT CEO Dr Jak Beula. It was Marika who first approached Dr Jak for NJCT to deliver a plaque to Saint Hadrian. Unfortunately, she did not live to see her vision realized, so as a tribute to her, NJCT decided to install her plaque (with special dispensation from English Heritage) at the same world heritage site as Abbot Hadrian. Thoroughly deserved.

Mangrove Nine (October 2025) were a young group of educated Caribbean advocates who were racially profiled and charged with crimes they did not commit in the 1970s. The trial went to the Old Bailey and at the time was the longest trial in British legal history. A number of the defendants chose to represent themselves, and in a historic decision defeated the Met police and all were found not guilty. The plaque reference 3 of the 9 who developed businesses teaching young people training and education. The plaque was sponsored by the Westway Trust and installed on Thorpe Close, on one of the former business sites of the 3.

Bob Marley (October 2025) this was first plaque globally to honour Bob Marley for his passion for football (his second love). The plaque was placed inside Battersea Park where he used to play with his friends, when he and the Wailers were recording Exodus. It was a green plaque and done in partnership with Wandsworth Council and the Battersea Society

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
At 3 the number of transactions during the reporting period is sufficiently small to be surveyed by the Chair of Trustees, all the Trustees and the CEO, in addition to those on the Finance Sub-Committee, ensuring transparency, clarity, and probity.
Charitable income and donations were used primarily for the installation of commemorative plaques detailed in the Our Achievements section of the Annual Report. The NJCT will continue to maintain the standard of commemorative plaques and memorials seeking additional charitable funding as necessary.
