TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 17 OCTOBER 2022
This Annual Report and Financial Statements have been prepared following the Guidance of the Charity Commission for England and Wales on the content and presentation of Receipts and Payments Accounts.
The Board of Trustees has chosen to use a Receipts and Payments Account as permitted under Section 133 of the Charity Act 2011 as:

Gross income does not exceed £250,000

The NJCT Constitution does not require an Accruals Account

The Trust has neither significant non-cash Assets nor Investments
-
The Trustees have claimed no expenses in relation to meetings and governance during the period of reporting

A full list of all 19 bank transactions, including dates, bank statement reference number and nature of transaction, was copied to all Trustees and the CEO
In view of all these particulars, the Board of Trustees has determined that an Independent Examination of the Trust’s finances is sufficient safeguard for the year ending 17 October 2022, given the simplicity and size of the Financial Statements.
At a Trustees Meeting held on 02 August 2023, the Trustees agreed the Annual Report comprising progress during the financial period to 17 October 2022 and the Financial Overview, including the Financial Statements.
The Trustees also voted unanimously to support the following proposition, in line with the Charity Commission’s Guidance.
“The Trustees agree that a full Audit is not required for the 17 October 2022 Accounts.”

OUR MISSION
Our object is the promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit, particularly but not exclusively with respect to Britain’s African Caribbean Community and those from the wider Commonwealth as well as to broadcast the hidden histories of which people of all age groups and cultures in the United Kingdom are typically unaware and which it is important for them to know.
PERPETUATION
The Trust continues to hold the Remembrance Sunday ceremony on Windrush Square. Additionally, there was a continuation of pledged funds following the unveiling of the Windrush & Commonwealth NHS Nurses and Midwives Statue as detailed in the Annual Report for the period ending 17 October 2021.
OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
During the financial period to 17 October 2022 , the Trust is proud to report the installation of ten commemorative plaques installed. These included plaques to:

Fela Kuti (November 2021). Fela Kuti was a pioneering African musician who was the founder of Afro Beat. He was also a political activist, and his influence on African music globally remains to this day. His plaque was installed in Hammersmith on the first property he lived in when he first came to the UK in 1958

Olaudah Equiano (December 2021). Olaudah Equiano was an 18[th] century writer and abolitionist. The installation of his plaque on a Grade II listed property in Greenwich was featured on BBC's Songs of Praise

Darcus Howe (January 2022) Darcus Howe was a civil rights activist, writer and broadcaster. His plaque was installed on his Brixton address where he published the hugely influential monthly journal Race Today

John Blanke (January 2022). John Blanke was the Black trumpeter in the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Clearly someone thought it humorous to give him the surname Blanke (meaning white). His image on the Westminster Tournament Roll is the first image we have of a Black Briton. His plaque is erected inside the Hawksmoor stairway, within the Old Greenwich Palace which is a World Heritage Site and Grade I listed property

Queen Marie Louise (February 2022). Queen Marie Louise was the wife of Christophe, Emperor of Ayiti (Haiti). She was the first and only Queen of Haiti and she came to the UK during the first half of the 19[th] century when Haiti found itself at war with a number of European nations. The plaque was installed on the house she lived in close to Baker Street station - a Grade II listed property

Pekings Records (March 2022). Pekings Records was a pioneering record label that helped introduce Reggae to the UK and Europe. The plaque was commissioned in

partnership with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (LBHF) and installed on the original site for the Pekings Record label and record shop in Hammersmith

Sarah Parker Remond (March 2022). Sarah Parker Remond was an African American abolitionist, lecturer, Suffragist and Polyglot who taught and lectured at UCL and Bedford College. She later settled in Italy where she had an equal impact teaching medicine. The plaque was installed on the UCL building in Russell Square

Hubert Baker and Leopold Williams (April 2022). The plaque tribute to Baker and Williams was in recognition of their contribution the African Caribbean resistance in the face of racism in West London after WWII. Williams set up a safe haven for newly arrived Caribbean British citizens in the 1950s. It was from there that Hubert ‘Baron’ Baker, a former WWII RAF veteran, organised a defence against fascist intimidation in 1958 which became known as the Notting Hill Uprising/Riots

Jimi Hendrix (June 2022). The installation of this plaque in the summer of last year was particularly pleasurable as it gave the NJCT CEO (as well as the Nubian Jak team of volunteers) the opportunity to meet Tito Jackson, a childhood hero of the NJCT CEO. Also present were Jimi Hendrix's sister who NJCT worked with to coordinate the event and the late Jeff Beck who gave his last public appearance unveiling the plaque. The plaque was installed on the front of the Hard Rock Hotel in Marble Arch

Edmonia “Wildfire” Lewis (August 2022). Edmonia Lewis was a renowned 19[th] century African American sculptor famed for her work relating to Black and Indigenous people in a Neo-Classical style. She lived in Hammersmith and the plaque was installed on her former home, again in partnership with the LBHF

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
At 19 the number of transactions during the reporting period is sufficiently small to be surveyed by the Chair of Trustees, all the Trustees and the CEO, in addition to those on the Finance Sub-Committee, ensuring transparency, clarity, and probity.
Charitable income and donations were used primarily for the installation of commemorative plaques detailed in the Our Achievements section of the Annual Report.
Sponsorship from Healthy Eaters, a restaurant and bakery close to the NJCT War Memorial, reported in the previous Annual Report ceased during the financial period to 17 October 2022. The NJCT will continue to maintain the standard of the memorial and seek additional charitable funding as necessary.
Following the resignation of the NJCT’s former honorary Treasurer, David Tootill, with effect from September 2021, the accounting has been handed over to the newly appointed Treasurer, Vincent Onuchi.
