TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 17 OCTOBER 2021

This Annual Report and Financial Statements have been prepared following the Guidance of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, on the content and presentation of Receipts and Payments Accounts.

The Board of Trustees has chosen to use a Receipts and Payments Account as permitted under Section 133 of the Charity Act 2011.

- Gross income does not exceed £250.000.

- The NJCT Constitution does not require an Accruals Account

- The Trust has neither significant non-cash Assets nor investments.

- The trustees claim no expenses in relation to meetings and governance.

- A full list of all 81 bank transactions, including dates, bank statement reference number and nature of transaction, was copied to all Trustees and the CEO, complete with 4 bank reconciliation points.

In view of all these particulars, the Board of Trustees has determined that an Independent Examination of the Finances is sufficient safeguard for the year ending 17 October 2021, given the simplicity and size of the Accounts.

At a Trustees Meeting held on June 29th 2022, the trustees agreed the Annual Report comprising the Year’s progress and the Financial Overview, including total income, expenditure and balance.

They also voted unanimously to support the following proposition, in line with the Charity Commission’s Guidance.

“The trustees agree that a full Audit is not required for the 1020/21 Accounts.”

Signed on behalf of the Board of Trustees

Dr Doirean Wilson

Chair of the Board

## **THE MISSION**

Our object is the promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit, particularly but not exclusively with Britain’s African Caribbean Community and from the Commonwealth and to broadcast the hidden histories of which people of all age groups & cultures in this country are typically unaware and which it is important for them to know.

## **2020/21 PERPETUATION**

We continue to hold the Remembrance Sunday ceremony on Windrush Square now that it is safe to do so, with a small presence in the years of lockdown.

## **2020/21 ACHIEVEMENTS**

**We are proud to report** that our long-planned major project to honour the Windrush and Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives with a statue, has finally been achieved, using ready cut stone imported from a Chinese supplier who was recommended to us by a sculptor. These were fitted together and placed in situ by our regular stonemason.

Since February 2020 we had agreed, in consultation with the Whittington Hospital, where the statue was to be placed, and modifications to the technical drawings had been made to match the location.

We had also gone ahead with plans for the accompanying book, titled “Nursing A Nation”. The centre piece is the individual stories and photographs of a group of Windrush nurses and midwives who were pioneers in the new NHS, and some of the next generation who are in the NHS now.

Researchers had also written articles covering ancient African contributions to medicine, early and later practitioners of African descent in the UK, and ground-breaking movers and shakers of African descent up to the present day. We had start up funding donated for the book by the Facet Trust.

During the uncertain times of the pandemic and lockdown, fundraising for the project had been difficult, with both companies and individuals unsure of their financial situation. We were now able to raise funds from some major companies, three local councils and the trade union Unite, as well as through a crowdfunder, where many individuals offered what they could afford, be it large or small. We are very grateful to all of these sponsors, without whom we could not have hit our target to see the project through in 2021.

The project was completed with a formal unveiling of the statue, which received major publicity, and is visible from the road just by the Hospital entry gate.

On the same day in September there was a book launch with entertainment, where the nurses and other contributors could collect their own copy of the beautifully-designed book.

During the year, five Nubian Jak black plaques were raised with a sponsorship by Sony. A further seven blue plaques were also put up, with sponsorship for each plaque, as usual, coming from interest groups wishing to commemorate the individual.

## **FINANCIAL OVERVIEW**

## **The Charity’s Funds**

It will be clear that funds were almost exclusively intended for the major project, in addition to an amount for 5 plaques.

The sponsorship from Healthy Eaters, a Restaurant and Bakery close to the NJCT War Memorial, given specifically for its maintenance, has continued to fund those behind the scenes costs such as insurances, specialist cleaning of the Memorial, management of Memorial events, as well as ensuring its safety when other unconnected major events take place in Windrush Square. These funds are now paid directly to our CEO, who deals with these matters.

## **Accounting**

As last year, the number of Transactions is sufficiently small to be surveyed by all the Trustees and the CEO, in addition to those on the Finance subCommittee, ensuring transparency, clarity, and probity. Four bank reconciliations were made across the Year.

_Following the resignation of our former honorary Treasurer with effect from September 2021, the books have been handed over to the new Treasurer._
