## **Objectves and Actvites** 

St. Peter's Foundation offers and supports intentional communities within parish settings in the Diocese of Exeter which promote Christian vocation. Currently, we provide opportunities in the Seaside Parish of Malborough, Salcombe and South Huish for young adults [Interns], where they can live in a Benedictine style community, act as pastoral assistants and study theology. 

When the Community is active, the Interns are resident in the Community house during the year and are fully involved in the work of the Seaside Parish, which covers Galmpton, Hope Cove, Malborough and Salcombe in South Devon. They attend and participate in Services and increasingly lead Worship in Services of the Word and Matins. They assist the Clergy by serving and can be vergers for weddings and funerals. They work pastorally in the Parish, with Malborough Primary School and with some housebound and ill Parishioners. They can get involved in other community activities such as helping at the local Food Bank. They attend St Mellitus, a theological college in Plymouth a day a week during academic terms to participate in their programmes. Ordinands, studying elsewhere, may come and stay in the Community House for periods during the year, as part of their Ministry Experience.

The Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on Public Benefit. 

## **Policy on social investment including program related investment** 

The Charity does not make any grants. 

## **Contributions made by volunteers** 

Some house and garden maintenance is undertaken by volunteers and the cost of the Annual Lunch is donated to the Charity. 

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.** 

The work of the Charity, over the last 8 years, has enabled young people to experience Community and Parish Life for a period of a year. The Parish has been enriched by their youthful presence and interest and enquiring minds. Two of the Interns have gone on to further theological training and another is in discernment for further training. The Interns’ work within the Parish has been appreciated by both the Parishioners and the wider community. The visiting Ordinands/Clergy in Training, who have stayed for short periods, have brought fresh ideas and added perspective and challenge to our usual understandings.

The Scheme has achieved its object with regard to involvement in Parish Life and to encourage vocation. 

## **Performance of fundraising activities against objectives** 

Funds were raised from the public and grants were made by the Diocese of Exeter under The Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme [MES]. The funds raised and donated do not usually cover the cost of the scheme when the Interns are resident. During the 2023 no Interns have been resident and the Community House has been let to increase the funds so Interns can again attend from September 2024. 

## **Investment performance against objectives** 

The Foundation does not make any investments. 

## **Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period** 

The Charity has adequate funds to maintain its property at Swallows Nest, Lower Town, Malborough but at the start of 2023 did not have sufficient funds to support Interns. The funds have grown and now allow for both maintenance of the property and the return of the Interns. 

## **Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held** 

The reserves of the Charity are its Bank Balance. The Charity will hold sufficient reserve to match its commitment to maintain the house and support Interns and Visitors. 

## **Amount of reserves held** 

The Balance at the Bank at the year end was £21,911.64. 

## **Explanation of any uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern** 

Providing sufficient reserves are held before commitments are made then there are no concerns about the Charity as a going concern. 

## **A description of the principal risks facing the charity** 

The Interns do not personally contribute to the funding of the scheme and so the accommodation and board costs are borne by the Charity. The risks the Foundation faces are a possible withdrawal of financial support from the Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme, maintenance costs of the property, replacement of furniture and equipment in the Community House and rising Utility and cost of living bills. 



## **Chair’s Report** 

Since we last met, when we had only had tenants in Swallows Nest for a few months, I am happy to say there has been a positive outcome. Our tenants have looked after the house and we have had little cause to attend; the tumble dryer had to be replaced, an ongoing leak from the main bathroom and the garage door were the main problems. Tim has kept a watchful eye on the garden and had the gate mended by the Kingsbridge Repair Shop. Tim, thank you for your support, it is greatly appreciated. 

Financially it has allowed the Foundation to become more secure and in a good position to offer future Interns a place with St Peter’s Foundation. 

The exterior of Swallows Nest does need a complete overhaul and is something the Trustees will have to plan for soon. Tim and I had quotes from double glazing companies to replace all the windows and from local decorators to repaint the windows. The maintenance of Swallows Nest is an ongoing expense which will have to be managed. 

Lastly, and more importantly, this year we have had time to revisit the St Peter’s Foundation’s offering. We have used the time by upgrading the website which I must thank Tim for taking this task on and Daniel for teaching us how to do it. Judy and I even had a go at updating a few things which made me smile, it really wasn’t as scary as I first thought. 

Judy has worked tirelessly in updating all the Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment Policies and Procedures, without which Daniel would not have been able to secure the MES grant; so again my thanks to you all for the unending commitment you have all shown. Daniel has also been in discussion with St Mellitus with the hope that future Interns will become involved in their new course. 

Our dear Gill has attended numerous meetings offering us her advice and guidance, albeit not in the best of health. Gill’s stamina is immense, and I thank her for that, she is a role model for many. Bless you Gill. 

Looking forward, we have had several enquiries from young adults showing an interest in the St Peter’s Foundation Internship and Ministry Experience Scheme. Unfortunately some need Visas which we feel may hinder their application. We are now in a position where we can hold interviews with the Safeguarding/Safer Recruitment Policies in Place. 

The  Holy  Trinity  Carr  Bequest  Fund  has  made  a  very  generous  donation  of  £10,000  to  the Foundation. Our sincere gratitude was passed onto the Trustees, and we will treat the donation with our utmost care. 

This year has been challenging and I am grateful to my fellow trustees for all their hard work and dedication to St Peter’s Foundation. We have put funds in place with the promise of an MES grant, the web site has been updated and all necessary policies are in place to invite Interns to join us at St Peter’s Foundation. AMEN

## **Chaplain’s Report** 

Though we have incubated the project for 18 months, this has not meant that as a team we have been out of touch with former Interns. Johny Pacner continues to live at the Vicarage and is enjoying his time here. Lewis Eden will soon be a vicar in the diocese and recently got married. It was a real pleasure to be able to attend the wedding at Crediton. Jassen Garcia has moved back to The Philippines and is continuing to work in evangelisation. She hopes to return to the UK. Mary Kilikidi is a regular visitor from Cambridge to the parish and has led services while here on holiday. In September she will start her third and final year. Ed continues to grow his art business from strength to strength. Oscar Egbulan is now working in youth Mental Health which was his particular passion. Ruth Cordell works for an arts centre and is in the discernment process through the Church of Wales. Brandon LeTourneau is now a parish Priest in America. 

Around this there is a youthful energy that has inspired friends and associates of the scheme to intersect with us. This includes placement Ordinands who keep in touch. For Example, Rev Jonathan Devereux, who works in some of the most challenging areas of Plymouth. Father Luke Dobson, who is soon to move to a parish in Harrow. Rev Dr Steve McGregor who is an assistant priest, lecturer and writer in Cambridge. Rev Miriam and Rev Charles were ordained last year and now work in Tiverton. Alfie Ward continues to bless our parish with his energy and has just completed his BA in Theology at Plymouth. Last November we as had the young Daniel McIlhiney come to speak to us about the persecuted Church in the wider world. A month before we had Aaron Stanbury come and speak to the church about his new job in Nairobi as a teaching assistant and sports coach with the Church Mission Society. Aaron knew Alfie and Frances from the theological college at Plymouth, where he too had completed his studies. So it’s all about connections, and I very much want to celebrate this. 

From 2024 onwards my hope is that the new one-year course at St Mellitus will prove the right fit as it is tailored to individuals at the beginning of the official discernment process. Likewise, the expansion of work underdone by Becky and her team at Youth for Christ should solidify our outreach to  children  and  teens  as  a Parish,  while  also  providing  a useful  volunteering  experience  for participants.

## **Churchwarden’s Report** 

Despite having no interns during this year, the Trustees have not been idle! 

We have updated and revamped the website, and written new Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment Policies and Procedures. We are on a much more secure financial footing having rented out Swallows Nest, and the Carr Bequest has generously given us £10,000 to support this valuable area of mission in the Parish. We have had a number of enquiries from young people interested in joining the scheme in September 2024, and are in the process of selecting and setting up interviews for those who have expressed an interest, and we have been accepted by the national Ministry Experience Scheme. 

Mary Kilikidi continues to come to us from Westcott House, Cambridge, where she is in her second year of Ordinand training. She does not have as much spare time as she did in her first year, but came for a weekend before going back to Moscow at Christmas, and for Holy Week and Easter. She led Compline at Salcombe on the Tuesday and Friday of Holy Week, and served at Malborough at their Wednesday Eucharist. She took the service at Galmpton on Easter Day while Debbie preached. 

This term at Westcott, Mary and 4 other Ordinands produced “In the Sacred Pause”, a resource for trauma-oriented and trauma-informed liturgies for use on Holy (Easter) Saturday, as one of their specialist seminar projects. It is a beautiful publication (one of her group had expertise in publishing) and contains prayers, readings, poems and resources for a day that is poignant with suffering and loss, but has no published liturgy. The group has now been given a small advance by Church House Publishing to widen the scope of the resource beyond Easter Saturday, with a view to national publication. 

Mary will come for a week in the summer, but has a 4 week placement in Manchester, and is not sure of dates yet. Brandon, Marta and their son, Augustus, are planning to visit us in July. He now has a curacy in Loomis, California.

## **Treasurer’s Report** 

The Income for 2023 was £14,819 and Expenditure £4,380. There were no Interns during the year and Swallows Nest had been let for 10 months. [The tenancy deposit has been transferred to a Deposit Protection Scheme] 

## **Income** 

The sources of income are donations, Gift aid refunds, fundraising, solar Feed-in-Tariff and grants from the Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme and, more recently, rent. 

## **Expenditure** 

Much of the usual expenses for the day to day running of the Community House have been taken over by the tenants this year. The house has been maintained and the electrical and gas systems and the electrical appliances have all been checked and found satisfactory. The Community House is sound but needs a significant investment in external decoration and upgrading. 

## **Energy Performance Certificate** 

This needed renewing in September 2023; the certificate awarded was C. The review suggested annual costs for heating, lighting, hot water and power of £2,554. The report stated that, realistically, extra savings could be made by more low energy lighting [£68 at a cost of £30] and high performance external doors [£85 at a cost of £3,500], other suggestions such as underfloor insulation would be too expensive to consider. 

## **Financial Review at the end of the period** 

The Charity now has adequate funds to maintain its property at Swallows Nest, Lower Town Malborough and to support the return of the Interns. 

## **Reserves** 

The reserves of the Charity are its Bank Balance. The Charity will hold sufficient reserve to match its commitment to maintain the house and support Interns and Visitors. 

## **The Accounts** 

The Accounts have not been Independently Examined or Audited as the Charity’s Income remains below £25,000.

New Trustees are appointed for a term of 3 years after a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity Trustees. In selecting individuals for appointment the charity Trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO. All Trustees can become a Trustee only after approval of the Bishop of Exeter. There should be a minimum of three and a maximum of seven Trustees. 

New Trustees, before agreeing to stand, are given a copy of the Constitution and a copy of the latest Trustee’s Annual report and Statement of Accounts.
