“It was a lovely environment, everyone was very helpful and informative. I learned how to sew Socially rewarding - meeting new people and making friends It was well presented and informative I learnt new ways of cutting not using a pattern Meeting new people and more knowledge of black history Please more of this It's been interesting to learn about Flip and to learn how to sew The young people have gained insight into the Windrush clothing that was worn back in the 60s they've gained information on what it was like for those coming over through during Windrush and invaluable um knowledge of those that have gone before for them. It was really fun like the sewing was really interesting and there was a lot of bright colours. I've made these gloves not long ago just now actually I've just finished with them they look very very nice um. I've been making all of these trousers and gloves and dresses we've been sewing them together and it's been very very fun”

“Made me feel very proud of my Jamaican heritage. This Windrush event brought back memories of how we lived, created friendship groups and enhanced an appreciation for theatre. Good to get out and socialise. Yes You can overcome if united and have the correct mind set, I Liked it very much. Very educational, it was inspiring to see people from all walks of life together in one accord, seeing so much young people involved. I accompanied a group of people who have diagnosis of dementia, one person said she felt included, another had never been to an event like this, everyone agreed that it had been a positive experience. It was a pleasure attending on Tuesday it was worth every minute the hard work that you all put in to make Tuesday such a memorable event. I think it’s important to keep our history, The need for us to congregate as a community, and the importance of the family atmosphere brought to us by The Black Heroes Foundation. Our school children and other young people need many more opportunities to display their talents, It touched me & I found it very EMPOWERING. Informative and wellpresented and showcased. About the work of Mary Martin LONDON, loved how young & old worked together & the spirit of passing down & sharing skills is alive & flourishing. The whole event was fantastic. Well done to Joyce and those you made the event a success.”

Structure, governance, and management of the charity

The methods used to recruit and appoint new charity trustees

When new or additional trustees are required people with specialist skills, including beneficiaries or organisations, would be invited to submit nominations and subject to their compliance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association they would be considered by the governing body of the trustees for election.

The policies and procedures for the induction and training of trustees

Prior to being elected nominees would be invited to attend a trustees’ meeting as well as having an introductory meeting with the Chair of the Charity to receive more information about the Charity itself, regarding the contents of the work of a trustee.

The charity’s organisational structure

In the year under review the Charity had three trustees all of whom are volunteers and who met together regularly in order to manage major events, as well as the holding of 4 formal board meetings. The trustees have overall control and responsibility for policy and major decision making. All directors are trustees.

Day to day management and responsibility for implementing policies is carried out by the trustees.

The Charity as part of a wider network

The Charity has no responsibility for nor is it answerable to any other organisation.

The trustee’s bankers and advisors

Bankers Metro Bank Plc , One Southampton Row, London, WC1B 5HA Santander , Bridle Road, Bootle, L30 4GB Advisors n/a

Respective responsibilities of trustees

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Charities Act”) and that an independent examination is needed.

Financial Review

Policy on reserves

The charity held unrestricted reserves of £6,390 at 31st July 2024. The Trustees aim to increase the unrestricted reserves to enable the Charity to demonstrate long-term sustainability. The trustees confirm they are satisfied that the charity is a going concern.

Risk and uncertainty

In terms of finances the biggest single risk Black Heroes Foundation faces is raising the finances required to achieve the aims and objectives of the charity. However, by the continuous review of a Risk Register the trustees of Black Heroes Foundation are constantly seeking to secure funding to the sustainability of the Charity plus all other legal, operational or financial risks to which the Charity could be exposed.

At the point of writing this report (Jan 2024), the charity is still recovering from the impact of the pandemic, and Trustee health issues, and the cost of living crisis.

Method of preparation of accounts

The financial statements have been prepared implementing the FRS 102 SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting by Charities) 2015 (as amended by the Bulletin issued in February 2016) and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard 102, (effective 1st January 2016)

Approval of this report

We are satisfied that this represents a true and fair view of the financial position of Black Heroes Foundation.

Expenditure

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Freehold investment property

Investment properties are measured initially at cost and subsequently at fair value at each balance sheet date and are not depreciated. All gains or losses are taken to the Statement of Financial Activities as they arise.

Stocks

Stock is included at the lower of cost or net realisable value. Donated items of stock are recognised at fair value which is the amount the charity would have been willing to pay for the items on the open market.

Trade and other debtors

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

Trade and other creditors

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

Page 12

Black Heroes Foundation Notes to the Accounts

Research and development

Expenditure on research and development is written off in the year in which it is incurred.

Foreign currencies

Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in currencies other than the functional currency of the charity are translated at the rates of exchange prevailing at the end of the reporting period.

Transactions in currencies other than the functional currency of the charity are recorded at the rate of exchange on the date that the transaction occurred.

All exchange differences are are taken into account in arriving at net income/expenditure.

Leased assets

Where the charity enters into a lease which entails taking substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of an asset, the lease is treated as a finance lease.

Leases which do not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to charity are classified as operating leases.

Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the charity at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the balance sheet date as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the charity's policy on borrowing costs.

Assets held under finance leases are depreciated in the same way as owned assets.

Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term. In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis.

Pension costs

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the charity pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the charity has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the charity in independently administered funds.

Receipt of donated goods, facilities and services

All donated goods, facilities and services received are recognised within incoming resources and expenditure at an estimate of the value to the charity.
