_**The main activities undertaken in relation to those purposes during the year Aug 2020 – Jul 2021:**_

- **The Virtual Locomotion** – Continued this online event for the Windrush generation. This virtual event was run on a weekly basis on Thursdays from 11:00 – 12:30. In April this was moved to a lunch time event 12:30 – 13:45 in order to accommodate those returning to work and wanting to attend during their lunch break. Consisting of community building and engagement activities, singing, quizzes, stories, exercise, and dance. All centred around the theme of sharing the history of a Black Hero each week. This program has continued through from March 2019 and is expected to run until June 2022.

- **The Virtual Soul Food Café** – Continued the online event of the award-winning Soul Food Café as a weekly Friday evening event for the Windrush generation. Consisting of community building and engagement activities including singing, dance and visiting guests of note and interest to the Windrush generation. Guests have included longest surviving Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie, East Enders actor Rudolph Walker CBE, social commentator and political activist Dr Patrick Vernon OBE, Broadcaster Brenda Emmanus OBE, former Met police superintendent Leroy Logon MBE, and Lovers Rock artists Carroll Thompson and Janet Kay., to name but a few.

Collaboration with the Bernie Grants Centre included the staging of the interactive finale of their “Hearticulate” program, and hosting of their Windrush celebration event interviewing Sharon Grant OBE and children of the Mangrove 9. The Virtual Soul Food Cafe too is expected to run until June 2022.

- **Legacy of Sam King – Southwark Schools** Sep-Nov 2020

The goals of this project were to engage with young people in the borough of Southwark through sharing the screening of the 17-minute documentary - “The story of Sam King, MBE” followed with an interactive activity where Black Heroes are brought to life using drama and art in order to improve their education and knowledge; increase their self-esteem; confidence, motivation and develop their artistic skills so that they can positively contribute to a diverse community and society.

The Foundation was able to engage with 4 secondary schools within the borough of Southwark inviting them to participate in the legacy of Sam King’s project. The schools were: Kingsdale Foundation School, St Saviour’s and St Olave’s Church of England School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, and University Academy of Engineering South Bank.

Feedback shows that the Sam King documentary helped students appreciate that “they can achieve what they aspire to”; that there is hope in “fighting for what I (they) believe in”, and that it gave them more of an understanding about Black Heroes”. These are all very positive comments which not only served to increase students’ awareness of Black Heroes, but it also indicates that we brought this to life using drama which played out in the workshops facilitated by the dramaturg.

We have learnt that through discussions and role play, students’ self-esteem, confidence and motivation were developed, and this was born out in the production of short and workin- progress plays; some of which will be used by students to go towards their final markings for their coursework on BTEC Performing Arts.

- **Wandsworth Heritage Festival** 29 May – 13 June 2021

Our virtual programs were part of the Wandsworth Heritage Festival and had some of the largest audiences for the festival. Virtual Locomotion 3 & 10 June, and Black Heroes Soul Food Café 4 & 11 June.

- **Corporate and Organisation Events**

Online workshops were delivered to organisations throughout the year, and during Black History Month celebrations. Organisations included: - Wandsworth & Richmond Council, Taylor Wimpy, Versus Arthritis, Exeter University BIPOC, and Iterable. These events not only raised education levels and awareness of Black history amongst the general public, but it also contributed to the promotion of inclusion, equity, and diversity, whilst adding to our revenue. As the MD of one organisation stated “ _I’m sure this year has been absolutely shocking for all of us, whatever the circumstances, personal or (non) work related. I recall the impact of your café which was achieving such renowned things... The most memorable thing for me was our connection with you – your huge contribution to society at all levels shines like a beacon, and the memory of Flip burns bright.... I think if the world was made of people of your ilk we’d be doing ok, but it’s a long hard road for that, and your guiding hand needs to extend much further afield than you realise_ ”

- **The Story of John Archer** – **at Wandsworth Arts Fringe WAF2021** Wandsworth Arts Fringe 2nd of July 2021 celebrated John Archer produced and delivered by the Black Heroes Foundation. This very special event was attended by 200 + guests, and live streamed.

The evening kicked off with lyrical verses from the People's poet Dave Neita. Followed by an historical, informative, and entertaining play about the life of John Archer a Liverpudlian, who became the first Black mayor in London as Mayor of Battersea in 1913.

The play included a performance by the impressive opera singer Nadine Benjamin MBE. Following this impressive performance, we were truly blessed by an amazing gathering of UK R&B Talent, the British Collective, a local Neo soul group comprising musical stars Omar, Junior Giscombe, Don E, and Noel Mckoy.

A number of dignitaries in attendance on the night were, the current Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Richard Field, the Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson, city of Liverpool MP Kim Johnson, as well as various other dignitaries. The foremost dignitaries in attendance were the 200 general public; their reactions were tremendous and the compliments never ending.

## **Financial Review**

## **Policy on reserves**

The charity held unrestricted reserves of £4,514 at 31st July 2021. The Trustees aim to increase the unrestricted reserves to enable the Charity to demonstrate long-term sustainability. The trustees confirm they are satisfied that the charity is a going concern.

## **Risk and uncertainty**

In terms of finances the biggest single risk Black Heroes Foundation faces is raising the finances required to achieve the aims and objectives of the charity. However, by the continuous review of a Risk Register the trustees of Black Heroes Foundation are constantly seeking to secure funding to the sustainability of the Charity plus all other legal, operational or financial risks to which the Charity could be exposed.

At the point of writing this report (March 2022), the charity has been impacted by Covid-19 both in terms of project delivery method and reach. Whilst there have been interruptions experienced to aspects of project delivery, the projects have been successfully delivered in conjunction with Covid-19 regulations, both virtually and face-to-face thus resulting in no negative impact due to the Covid-19 virus restrictions.

## **Method of preparation of accounts**

The financial statements have been prepared implementing the FRS 102 SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting by Charities) 2015 (as amended by the Bulletin issued in February 2016) and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard 102, (effective 1st January 2016)
