The Charity’s Main Activities
Performance and achievements
The charity’s main activities during the period of the Report.
The Black Health Forum provides a wide range of activities and services which supports health and wellbeing and promotes education. These include:
-
A monthly African and African Caribbean Wellbeing café which delivers health and wellbeing activities for older people monthly. This contributes to reducing loneliness and isolation and help the elders to live independent, healthy, happy lives.
-
Weekly exercise sessions are provided online and in person.
-
We have recently started to form partnership with local schools in the area so that the elderly and school children can have a better understanding of each other and learn together.
-
In contributing to research, a Health Needs Assessment was carried out with Public Health Bradford to identify inequalities in health among the black and minoritised communities in Bradford District. This resulted in a positive outcome where funding was made available for community organisations to carry out projects to address the issues identified.
-
We have worked collaboratively with the Institute of Health Research cofacilitating focus groups to ascertain the quality of care given to black and minoritised communities during end-of-life care.
-
Members of the BHF African and African Caribbean Wellbeing café (AACWC) participated in a Research Project proposal about dementia prevention. This resulted in funding being allocated to carry out further research in this area.
-
During the 75[th] Windrush celebrations, the African Caribbean elders shared their first and second Windrush Generation memories which were captured and made into an exhibition which was exhibited and appreciated.
-
The BHF became a partner of Good Things Foundation, a charitable organisation which supplies SIM cards and devices to organisations to distribute members on low income so they can stay connected and access vital services.
-
The BHF was awarded funding from Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership to deliver a Black Women’s Health in Pregnancy project. The project ended in October, and we are still awaiting the release of the report.
-
Funding was obtained from Wellsprings Together for the development of the BHF. This was carried out successfully.
-
Funding was also obtained from Lottery Heritage Awards for All to recruit a community development worker this is ongoing
-
The BHF in partnership with the Dominica Association implemented ‘De Man Dem Health Club’ to tackle health problems in men but particularly black men.
Over the year we have made great strides toward achieving our main objectives. Our team has worked hard to, help reduce health equalities among the black communities and provide services that enables older people in the Bradford District to live happy healthy lives. We have also collaborated with community partners in participating in research education and training.
The Black Health Forum has an excellent team of trustees and trained volunteers who have been instrumental in providing the support needed to deliver a high-quality service to our communities. Thanks to all members of the Black Health Forum’s team for their dedication and hard work in providing these services. As a community organisation, we will continue to work hard for the benefit of the descendants of Bradford, and we look forward to continuing to be achieving our goals in the future.
