NEWARK ODINIST TEMPLE TRUST
TRUSTEES, ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2024 12025
The Newark Odinist Temple, now in its eleventh year of operation since its consecrdtion at
Midsummer 2014. continues to hold aloft the torch of the elder faith of this nation in its bastion of
Newark-on-Trent, and our congregation grows ever stronger and more vigorous. At Yule Evc a
record number of forty-one persons attended for the rite. which was almost full capacity for our
small place of worship, and if the numbers increase, then we will be obliged to take steps to arrange
shifts with extra services. or else ask people to book a place ahead of time. At other festivals
numbers have been very satisfactory. including many families and children.
The nine festivals of the Odinist sacred year are observed by the celcbration of sacrifices, known as
the Cup of Remembrance. When this takes place communally the ritual is followed by a discus8ion
which allows members to air their vicws and ask questions and develop their understanding by
listening to their peers. Weddings and Namings of infants have taken place according to the Odinist
rites. The study of the Odinist mythlore and runelore continues with enthusiasm by members, new
and old alike. We have taken steps to improve our communal singing. And we continue to
welcome visitors from all over the land and even from overseas, as is testified by Ihe ample entries
in our visitors, book.
Two Hearths operate from the Newark Odinist Temple. One is the long-standing Hearth of the
Hammer, which always meeis on thc actual date of Ihe fesiival (or on ihc evc of Quarter Days). 'l-hc
other is The Wayfarer's Hearth, whiLh meets usually on the neare.st weekend, as this is more
convcnicnt for those with work commitmenls, or for families with young childrcn. or for pcoplc out
of town. Sometimes the moots for the Hearths are held jointly.
The open days at the Newark Odinist Temple continue to attract many visitors, and are, in our
opinion, a valuable way of reaching out to the wider community. Our aim is not to convert visitors
but to eduLate them in their own ancestral spiritual inheritance, and of course to present a positive
aspect of the religion. All visitors receive a leafiel and are asked to sign the visitors, book, and
tho%e who wish it are offered a brief tour focussing on the history of the building and the meaning
ofthe religious paintings on display.
Visits have been arranged for Temple members to the Nine Ladies, Stones in Derbyshire at Easter,
and later on to a concert at the Birniingham Symphony Hall of thc folk-rock band, Wardruna, whose
music and lyrics are inspired by the Eddas.
In May 2024 a major redecoration of the Temple took place. The cupola was repainted with
weather-proof white paint to protect it against the depredations of the Sun. The interior wire netting
inside the louvres of the cupola were found to be sound, thus protecting the building against ingress
of bats and birds - as we do not want any bats in our belfry! And, intcrnally, the superficial cracks
in the interior paintwork was rectified and one wall entirely repainted, making the whole building
look much snwter.
The Newark Odinist Temple continues, by popular demand, to host the Odinist Fellowship's
Midsummer Gatherings which act as the charities, A.G.M.
