– Cheltenham Powerchair Football Club - Annual Report 11.10.2020 to 10.10.2021.

Activities and achievements during the year

Many of our beneficiaries were isolated and they combat this issue by attending our sessions on a regular basis, to benefit from the inclusion, regular commitment, socialisation with friends and having a focus or goal. However, the national lockdowns took all these positives away, creating more barriers to social inclusion than ever before. Like most charities and organisations, we had an extremely challenging 12-month period, due to the Covid-19 pandemic spreading across the UK rapidly. Following the previous accounting period, our sessions remained cancelled due to keeping our participants safe. Unfortunately, many leisure centres, sports clubs and teams were beginning to return to play, however following the Government and WFA (Our national governing body for Powerchair football) guidance, we ensured we kept our participants and volunteers safe and remained patient. As a result of this, we continued to adapt our work, knowing that the pandemic was here to stay and would have a severe impact on our beneficiaries physical and mental wellbeing, continuing online zoom calls, hosting various activities such as quizzes, competitions, and drop-in sessions.

We had been in a mixture of lockdowns or complying with set regulations which has restricted us from getting back to what our participants love best. However, we knew that when restrictions were eased and guidance was allowing us to return safely, that this would look very different to pre pandemic sessions, so we made sure we were ready to ensure we could deliver covid safe sessions, focusing on how we could adapt our processes and procedures at face-to-face sessions to keep everyone safe. During lockdown, we also worked hard to ensure our funding was in place to return whenever that may be, and worked hard on a rebrand of our teams, including new match kits and training kits for our participants, to boost their spirits on their return to Powerchair football. This helped them realise that there will be a time where normality resumes, and they can return to football.

In May 2021, the time came where we could return and thankfully, we did so successfully with a very smooth transition back to face-to-face sessions. Some participants were extremely anxious however, being proactive and ensuring we had everything in place for when the participants were allowed to return to Powerchair football enabled us to help them come back into the community, boosting the physical and mental health.

We are fully aware that this will be a long process and we must support our participants throughout. We have increased the frequency of sessions to ensure we can have a significant impact on our participants and offer them support unconditionally.

Our Development and competitive teams have all now fully returned and are excited to be able to begin competing again when the league begins, which is likely to be 2022. Our national league team have restarted their league and are loving the opportunity to play powerchair football as they did before.

Aims and objectives

Cheltenham Powerchair Football Club aims to provide a club which facilitates recreational and competitive powerchair football opportunities for people with a physical or learning disability. We are determined to continue growing as a club, being able to provide specialized powerchairs, equipment, coaching and support for people with disabilities in Gloucestershire.

The club is committed to providing a development pathway within the county and facilitating participants of all ability levels.

Future plans

Our main aims, especially for the next accounting period is to ensure we can support participants post pandemic, with anxiety and any other worries. We aim to return to pre pandemic participation rates with players returning when they are ready. We also aim to have teams competing across 3 different leagues, which will enable us to have a competitive team for every ability and ensure we are creating and offering as many opportunities as possible for our participants. As an organisation, we also aim to grow our volunteer base, upskilling volunteers and ensuring the club and committee very much remains the core of players and parents/carers, so they can help to guide the club forwards.
