’ – Trustee s report October 2019 to October 2020

Activities and achievements during the year

A year of transition with many new participants joining the club, taking our club to over 40 members in total was a very proud moment. This involved all sessions continuing in the same format but expanding and developing enabling more participants to take part.

We have been working very closely with Goals Beyond Grass in expanding the amount of Powerchairs we have access to for participants to use too, especially the football specific chairs which are safer and easier to take part in.

We began the season again entering the South West League, in Taunton. However, after only two matchdays, we were hit by the covid-19 restrictions and this resulted in training sessions and all other activities being cancelled following Government guidelines.

Since then, we have been in a mixture of lockdowns or complying with set regulations which has restricted us from getting back to what our participants love best. However, we knew these participants would be isolated, many lonely due to living alone or having football as one of their only regular commitments, so working alongside Goals Beyond Grass, we delivered online zoom sessions, hosting various activities such as quizzes, competitions and drop-in sessions.

Goals Beyond Grass also worked with a variety of our participants with us on a Coach Education programme, introducing many participants to coaching, so that some of them can get involved even more post lockdown.

During lockdown, we also worked hard to ensure our funding was in place to return whenever that may be, and also worked hard on a rebrand of our teams, including new match kits and training kits for our participants, to boost their spirits on their return to Powerchair football. This helped them realise that there will be a time where normality resumes, and they can return to football.

Aims and objectives

Cheltenham Powerchair Football Club aims to provide a club which facilitates recreational and competitive powerchair football opportunities for people with a physical or learning disability. We are determined to continue growing as a club, being able to provide specialized powerchairs, equipment, coaching and support for people with disabilities in Gloucestershire. The club is committed to providing a development pathway within the county and facilitating participants of all ability levels.

Future plans

We are working closely with our Partners Goals Beyond Grass, to ensure that we deliver best practice and continue to set the standard for clubs in England, particularly within the South West. We are hoping to continue to grow our competitive teams, so that with GBG we can have a Gloucestershire League for the 2021-2022 season if restrictions allow this, instead of having to travel to Exeter or Taunton to compete. While this is our aim, we also want to continue delivering high quality coaching and enable to create an environment which feels like a second family for our participants, carers and family members. We want to continue to achieve success both on and off the court, by offering the local competitive and recreational opportunities but also by working with GBG to ensure we can increase the number of powerchairs in the county so that the players can rely on their clubs to provide chairs and equipment for new and current players. Most importantly, we want to ensure we provide a safe return when restrictions are lifted and support our current and new participants to return to powerchair football sessions safely and comfortably.
