Between 25th October 2024 and 26th January 2025, collectively FoHS volunteers registered 3198 duties across the sites we warden at Horsey and Winterton. Shifts of 2.5 hours are concentrated at weekends, other than during the 3 weeks of School Christmas/New Year holidays when wardening increases to cover the hours of 8am and 4pm. We run ad-hoc shifts at other times during the week.

Seal births November 2024 to early January 2025 reached 3,246, this

`

fgure is 370 down on last year,
which is partly due to a general
decline in seal births around the
coast of the UK. FoHS seal fgures
feed into the research at St
Andrews University to try and
understand why this is happening.
Breeding continues to extend
towards Sea Palling to the north
and beyond Winterton to Hemsby
in the south. We are currently
working with Natural England using
drone technology to obtain
accurate seal numbers in the
future.
As in the previous year, wardening
continued from 27thJanuary until
5thMay 2025 while thousands of
Grey seals went through their
annual moult, attracting large
numbers of visitors. Volunteers
were asked to walk the beaches to
inform visitors about the moult and
advise them to give the animals
distance to prevent disturbance.
This year we have included a Duty
Warden on each shift to help with
organization and support wardens
with the ever-increasing number of
visitors.
While everyone registered with
FoHS is a volunteer, seal wardens
are the backbone of the charity,
which would not operate without
them. The trustees are hugely
grateful for the work done by
volunteers and appreciate their
dedication to aiding protection of
the
seals
and
the
dune
environment by greeting, guiding
and informing members of the
public about them. Our wardens
work tirelessly, in all weathers,
throughout the pupping season
and the moult. This takes becomes
more difcult as each year passes,
bringingever-increasingnumbers

`

of visitors to the beaches.

Secton D Achievements and performance Secton D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity
during the year
●FoHS mobile information unit attended 8 fetes and
carnivals during the summer months of 2024 raising
awareness of the work of the charity and potential
for recruitment of volunteers.
●Volunteers gave 10 talks to groups such as the WI,
WRVS and schools
●Successful recruitment and training in 2024 brought
in 91 new wardens, maintaining the strength of the
wardening team.
●Two wardens were trained to strengthen FoHS
Rescue Team and assist with increased callouts to
sick and injured seals covering a wider area as far
south as Gorleston.
●FoHS successful partnership with RSPCA East Winch
Wildlife Hospital continued throughout the year.
●Very busy pupping & breeding season at Horsey and
Winterton successfully wardened over a 10 week
period.
●Weekly pup count carried out successfully with
results feeding into SMRU who compare data, we
also share the data with PhD students when asked.
●From 01/04/2024 to 31/03/2025 there have been
301 rescues an increase of 30% on last year. This
does not include call outs to Winterton and Horsey
and those pts, during the pupping season, which are
not recorded unless they go to the rescue centre at
RSPCA East Winch. This is due to the high volume of
calls, during December 2024 there was 587 calls to

`

Section D Achievements and performance the emergency phone. Breakdown of figures: 38 to East Winch, 21 entanglements (15 were caught and all survived), 4 trapped in rocks, 12 pts. ●FoHS continued to support the Flying Rings Campaign this year, by extending our financial support of this essential work. During 2024-25 the beach swap system continued, by swapping solid discs for any flying rings that were spotted by wardens walking the beaches. Although the scheme is still in its early stages wardens engaged with holidaymakers during the summer months, educating the public about the danger of flying rings. This followed on the work done during the winter months with visitors who come specifically to see the seals. Other wardens continued to monitor shops and businesses for flying rings, encouraging owners to change the type of flying toys they sell. Our wardens also gave many educational talks to schools, library and WI groups, including information on the flying rings campaign.
