Duties are of 2.5 hours and are concentrated at weekends, other than during the 3 weeks of School Christmas/New Year holidays when wardening is daily between the hours of 10am and 4pm. We run ad-hoc shifts at other times during the week. You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: - policy on grant making - policy programme related investment. - contribution made by volunteers. Seal births November 2023 to early January 2024 reached 3,616, we believe this figure to be possibly higher, but we experienced a high loss of pups due to two large storm surges. Breeding continues to extend towards Sea Palling to the north and beyond Winterton in the south. As in the previous year, wardening continued throughout February and into early May while thousands of Grey seals went through their annual moult, attracting large numbers of visitors. Volunteers were asked to walk the beaches to inform visitors about the moult and advise them to give the animals distance to prevent disturbance. While everyone registered with FoHS is a volunteer, seal wardens are the backbone of the charity, which would not operate without them. The trustees are hugely grateful for the work done by volunteers and appreciate their dedication to aiding protection of the seals and dune environments, and greeting, guiding and informing members of the public about them. We are as always ever grateful to and appreciative of our hard working team of volunteer wardens who give of their time freely in all weathers to protect the growing seal colony and environment from disturbance and damage whilst making visits by the everincreasing numbers of visitors both informative and enjoyable. ## Section D Achievements and performance |**Summary of the main**

FoHS mobile information unit attended 7 fetes and carnivals
during the summer months of 2023 raising awareness of the
work of the charity and potential for recruitment of
volunteers.

Volunteers gave 10 talks to groups such as the WI, WRVS
and schools

Successful recruitment and training in 2023 brought in 100
new wardens, replacing volunteers who had retired or gone
on to do other things, and maintaining the strength of the
wardening team.

Five wardens were trained to strengthen FoHS Rescue
Team and assist with increased callouts to sick and injured
seals.

FoHS successful partnership with RSPCA East Winch
Wildlife Hospital continued throughout the year.

Very busy pupping & breeding season at Horsey and
Winterton successfully wardened over 10-13 week period.

Weekly pup count carried out successfully with results
feeding into SMRU who compare data, we also share the
data with PhD students when asked.

During 2023 -24 we attended 198 rescues, these do not
include moving pups at Horsey or Winterton. 37 were taken
to RSPCA East Winch, 14 were pts, the rest were either
entanglements, stuck in rocks, in a place they shouldn’t be
i.e. on roads, or we monitored them.

FoHS continued its support of the Flying Rings Campaign,
which in summer of 2023 achieving increased support by
North Norfolk Council banning fying rings on their beaches.
We supported the Parliamentary Campaign to ban the sale
of fying rings nationwide, which unfortunately had to be
abandoned due to the General Election. Other areas of
support are talks about the fying rings campaign, the beach
swap system, where holiday makers on the beach are asked
to swap their fying rings for a solid ring and wardens
actively checking shops and businesses for fying rings,

This also allows wardens to radio Seal Rescue more quickly when they discovery seals in distress or injured. Three new laptops / cases/ Microsoft Office / Virus package £1730.97 - The Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Trustee responsible for Wardens and Duty Wardens are now able all able to work securely when saving Friends of Horsey Seals documents and working online. Without this, we would not be able to recruit new wardens and provide a comprehensive training system; continue to recruit to our ‘Friends Scheme,’ supporting our fundraising by way of an annual donations, run our rota and keep wardens up to date with information.
