## Administrative details 

Angel Early Music is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with charity registration number 1169496.  The principal address of the charity is Foxtons, 23 The Street, Little Waltham, Chelmsford, Essex, CM3 3NS. 

The trustees of Angel Early Music during the year to 30 June 2022 and up to the date of this report were Mrs Nancy MacNish Porter, Mrs Annabel Malton and Mr Gerald Malton. 

## Governance 

Angel Early Music is governed by a foundation model constitution registered on 5 October 2016. 

The minimum number of trustees is three and the maximum is twelve. There is no requirement for trustees to retire and seek re-election. 

The  trustees  have  due  regard  to  the  guidance  on  public  benefit  published  by  the  Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties. 

## Objectives 

The objectives of Angel Early Music are to advance public education in and appreciation of the art and science of early music (composed before 1800) by any means the trustees see fit including through the presentation of public concerts mainly in the south-east of England. 

## Activities 

The year ended 30 June 2022 saw a return to live performances and other in-person events following the COVID restricted activities of the previous year. 

In summary, 16 grants totalling £43,780 were awarded during the year (2021 – 19 grants; £39,703). Ten of these amounting to £32,650 were to support CD recording projects and the remaining six were in support of live performances in the South East and in other locations including Brighton, London and Coventry.  The largest two awards were of £5,500 for a CD recording entitled _Battle Cry_ by Helen Charlston (mezzo-soprano) and Toby Carr (theorbo) of music associated with female abandonment  and  lament,  and  £5,000  for  a  CD  recording  entitled _Northern  Light_ by  the instrumental  group  Spiritato  featuring  music  from  the Düben  collection  assembled  in  the seventeenth century at the Swedish Court Chapel. 

Five further viol days coached by Alison Kinder were held during the year with participants working on the music of Byrd, Coprario, Gibbons, Lassus, Lupo, Mico, Palestrina and Tomkins amongst others. 

In addition Angel Early Music promoted a concert given in May 2022 by the Chelys Consort of Viols and Essex Voices at Great Waltham church including a mixed programme of early vocal and instrumental music entitled “A Traveller's Diary”. 

A wide range of grants has already been committed in support of twelve projects due to take place during the 2022/23 financial year.  These include ten further performances, each by a different group of artists, and two of which incorporate masterclasses and educational projects specifically designed for musicians joining the early music profession.  There is also a further CD recording and support for a publication describing the history and playing technique of the unvented natural trumpet.  In addition, two viol coaching days have already been held with a further day arranged for 



November.   Another concert is to be given by Chelys Consort of Viols and Essex Voices in May 2023 featuring the music of English composer William Byrd, who lived and worked in Essex for many years, 2023 being the quatercentenary of his death. 

The activities of Angel Early Music continue to be promoted through its website, which contains reports on all events and projects previously supported as well as inviting applications for grants to support the future promotion and study of early music. 

## Financial summary 

In total Angel Early Music received income of £54,424 during the year (2021 - £51,432) including donations of £44,878 (2021 - £39,611), Gift Aid of £8,153 (2021 - £10,294) and event income from ticket sales and participant fees of £1,393 (2021 - £1,516). 

Grants of £43,780 were paid during the year (2021 - £39,703).  Payments of £2,365 were made in respect of concert artist and venue costs and viol tuition days (2021 - £2,299). 

The surplus of receipts over payments for the year amounted to £8,279 (2021 - £7,352).  Taken together with funds of £16,012 held at 30 June 2021, cash balances at 30 June 2022 were £24,291 held on current account with Barclays Bank. 

The trustees' policy is to maintain sufficient reserves to cover future commitments.  Reserves at 30 June  2022  together  with  donations  received  since  are  sufficient  to  meet  the  £35,945  of commitments made to date in support of projects in the financial year 2022-23 and beyond.

Note 1 Event income and expenditure relates to six viol coaching days and one concert. In 2020121 there
were two viol coaching days and one concert.
Note 2 Sixteen grants were paid in the year ranging from £730 to £5,500. In 2022r21 nineteen grants were
paid ranging from £200 to £5,000.
Note 3 In 2020121 fees ￿Ere paid for seven wdeos commissioned during Cowd lockdowns.

I report on the accounts of Angel Early Music, a Charitable Incorporated Organisalion, with
Registered Charity Number 1169496, for the year ended 30th June 2022. 8 copy of which is attaehed.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's Iruslees
consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 14412} of the Charities Act 2011 (the
2011 Acll and that an independent examination is needed.

Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity
Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a
comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual
items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Iruslees concerning any
such mallers. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an
audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view,
and the report is limited to those mallers sel out in the next statement.
