Angel Early Music is registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with charity registration number 1169496. The principal address of the charity is Foxtons, 23 The Street, Little Waltham, Chelmsford, Essex, CM3 3NS.
The trustees of Angel Early Music during the year to 30 June 2021 and up to the date of this report were Mrs Nancy MacNish Porter, Mrs Annabel Malton and Mr Gerald Malton.
Governance
Angel Early Music is governed by a foundation model constitution registered on 5 October 2016.
The minimum number of trustees is three and the maximum is twelve. There is no requirement for trustees to retire and seek re-election.
The trustees have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties.
Objectives
The objectives of Angel Early Music are to advance public education in and appreciation of the art and science of early music (composed before 1800) by any means the trustees see fit including through the presentation of public concerts mainly in the south-east of England.
Activities
Activities during the year ended 30 June 2021 were heavily influenced by the presence of Covid-19. CD and video recordings formed the majority of projects supported together with online performances, with live concerts and in-person coaching being much more limited.
In summary, 19 grants totalling £39,703 were awarded during the year (2020 – 7 grants; £15,774). Ten of these amounting to £28,860 were for recordings, with a further five grants totalling £8,540 awarded in support of online performances. The remaining four grants of £2,303 were to support the purchase of recording equipment and development of performers' websites. The largest two awards were each of £5,000, one for a CD recording of the music of Josquin by The Gesualdo Six marking the 500[th] anniversary of the composer's death and the second for a performance of Bach's Matthew Passion by Amici Voices streamed live on Passion Sunday. For many of the performers this was their first concert performance since the first Covid lockdown in March 2020.
The first half of the financial year also saw completion of seven more short videos in a continuation of the initiative launched shortly after the curtailment of live performances, providing musicians with a source of income and an outlet for small-scale performance whilst strict social distancing measures were in place. Total fees for these five videos amounted to £2,078.
Two further viol days coached by Alison Kinder were possible in October 2020 and June 2021, although due to Covid numbers were restricted to a maximum of six on these occasions. Participants worked in both pre-formed and ad-hoc consorts playing, amongst others, the music of Coprario, East, Ferrabosco, Locke, Schein, Simpson and Tomkins.
A concert of music by the English composers Gibbons and Tomkins was promoted by Angel Early Music and given by the Chelys Consort of Viols and Essex Voices at Great Waltham church on 12[th] June, having been cancelled the previous year due to Covid. It was performed to a reduced capacity
audience having regard to the continuing requirements for social distancing at that time.
A wide range of grants has already been committed in support of 14 projects due to take place during the 2021/22 financial year. These include a further ten CD recordings, each by a different group of artists, and four performances, two of which incorporate masterclasses and educational projects specifically designed for musicians joining the early music profession. In addition, two viol coaching days have already been held with another one arranged for November, and a further concert featuring the Chelys Consort of Viols and Essex Voices is planned for May 2022.
The activities of Angel Early Music continue to be promoted through its website, which contains reports on all events and projects previously supported as well as inviting applications for grants to support the future promotion and study of early music.
Financial summary
In total Angel Early Music received income of £51,432 during the year (2020 - £20,289) including donations of £39,611 (2020 - £15,950), Gift Aid of £10,294 (2020 - £3,874) and event income from ticket sales and participant fees of £1,516 (2020 - £465).
Grants of £39,703 were paid during the year (2020 - £15,774) and video fees amounted to £2,078 (2020 - £3,499). Costs of £2,299 were paid in respect of the viol tuition days and the Gibbons & Tomkins concert.
The surplus of receipts over payments for the year amounted to £7,352 (2029 - £51). Taken together with funds of £8,660 held at 30 June 2020, cash balances at 30 June 2021 were £16,012 held on current account with Barclays Bank.
The trustees' policy is to maintain sufficient reserves to cover future commitments. Reserves at 30 June 2021 together with donations received since are sufficient to meet the £41,230 of commitments made to date in support of projects in the financial year 2021-22 and beyond.

Note 1 Event income and expenditure relates to two viol days and one concert. In 2019/20 there were three viol days and costs of a concert cancelled due to Covid restrictions.
Note 2 Nineteen grants were paid in the year ranging from £200 to £5,000. In 2019/20 seven grants were paid ranging from £174 to £5,500.
Note 3 Fees were paid during the year for seven videos commissioned during Covid lockdowns. In 2019/20 fees were paid for twelve videos.
