Many of these families found<br>themselves without a breadwinner through<br>death or disability.  Many were re-settled in<br>the Wanni area of northern Sri Lanka, in<br>rudimentary housing but without water<br>supplies.  It is these families we try to help.<br>Most wells are built from scratch, but in<br>some cases, we repair or secure a well<br>which has been dug but not reinforced or<br>without safety barriers, leaving them as<br>serious hazards to both children and<br>livestock.<br>Families<br>are<br>selected<br>in<br>a<br>non-<br>discriminatory manner.  Those families who<br>are most in need, invariably where the main<br>breadwinner was maimed or killed during<br>the civil war are reviewed with the input of<br>District<br>Council<br>staff,<br>local<br>church<br>representatives and community leaders to<br>place them in priority order.  In previous<br>years, wells were provided for shared use<br>between several families, but this proved to<br>be unsuccessful because of disputes.<br>Relieving the poverty of these families is<br>always paramount.<br>As well as for personal use, the supply of<br>fresh water can be utilised for irrigating<br>smallholdings<br>producing<br>fruit<br>and|





|||vegetables for personal consumption and<br>for sale in local markets.  This process builds<br>self-respect among families who have had<br>to rely purely on charity to survive since the<br>end of the civil war.<br>Our consistent support and oversight of this<br>project over many years has given others<br>the confidence to add their support. This has<br>led to significant donations being made<br>direct to the project team in Sri Lanka. More<br>wells have been provided than would have<br>been possible just from our own financial<br>support. The number of wells quoted in this<br>report are a result of total funds from all<br>sources donated to the Sri Lankan project<br>team for the construction of wells.<br>|

Aside from an interruption in international travel brought about by the pandemic, in normal times regular visits are made to Sri Lanka at the Trustees’ own expense, to oversee operations and ensure that the selection of families and communities for the allocation of funds is proceeding fairly and entirely determined by the extent of families’ needs. An<br>increase in the financial contribution from<br>Well-Being’s sister charity Oru Paanai<br>(Water), and a large single contribution<br>made direct to the Sri Lanka operation,<br>meant that thirty-one wells were constructed<br>over the year in question (including one well<br>which was held over from 2019-2020<br>because of construction difficulties).<br>From its inception to the end of 2020-2021,<br>the Charity has raised over £58,600 from its<br>supporters in the United Kingdom and has<br>provided a total of 126 wells (a further 31<br>wells were provided before the Charity was<br>established, through a ‘Pilot’ project).  This<br>has resulted in a growing number of families<br>who can live without fear of hunger and<br>disease, with the wells providing domestic<br>supplies, the irrigation of crops for food and<br>for sale, and improved hygiene.<br>Widespread conversations take place with<br>those families who have benefited from the<br>provision of wells, to ensure that work has<br>been meeting good standards and fulfilling<br>the Charity’s objectives of securing families’<br>futures at minimum cost.|
