Hayling Island Men’s Shed Association Chairmans Report to the Charity Commission The ever-changing world through 2021 had several repercussions within Hayling Island Men’s Shed. Still operating under a temporary Chairman and carrying forward the existing committee the shed however saw a growth in membership and was gaining a wider presence in the general community, completing projects large and small for several local organisations including schools and other charities. The workshop remains busy and a selection of small items such as bird boxes, hedgehog houses, bird feeders and garden planters were being produced in some quantities. Many were created by members that had no previous knowledge or skills in working with wood and are central to the purpose of the shed movement in placing new skills and knowledge at the fingertips of those that wish to learn. Some of the more skilled workers were restoring or creating larger items such as garden benches, animal pens The important social aspects continued and the arts group, cribbage group and the social gathering all grew in number. Social interaction is important, especially for those members that perhaps live alone or have no local family members and our ‘natter’ sessions have proved popular and I am sure many of the world’s problems have been solved over a coffee and a plate of biscuits. Early 2022 saw a new optimism as a wider sense of normality crept into our lives. Our first proper AGM since the start of the pandemic saw a new Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary elected along with the existing Treasurer. The idea of a supporting cast of ordinary members was accepted to cover workshop management, fundraising, social and community projects. The Hayling Island Men’s Shed is now a recognised and welcome community feature and is full of optimism for the future.
