The Trustees continue to work towards increasing the number of Trustees to complement the existing skills in the best interests of the CIO. It was acknowledged that there is a need to recruit more Trustees to enable CCLN to deliver it’s ambitions in a sustainable way.

The following risks were identified: 

Recruitment of Trustees – Additional Trustees needed to strengthen CCLN and to broaden the skills base.  Current Trustees consider this a priority for their revised action plan 

Reduction in Funding - The Trustees are developing a fundraising strategy to broaden the charity’s funding base and support CCLN’s charitable aims and objectives. Trustees consider this a priority for their revised action plan. 

Reduced resources available to partner organisations – Trustees have developed a limited range of digital delivery/blended learning. Trustees consider this a priority. 

Volunteer Profile – Limited number of volunteers.  Current dedicated volunteers have a range of health needs which has been impacted further by the pandemic. 

Trustees are aware they need to increase not only the number of volunteers but widen the volunteer base in terms of age, gender and ethnicity. Trustees consider this as a priority.

To advance the education of the public via learning services provided to a network of staff and volunteers connected with museums, libraries, archives, historic houses, sacred spaces, art and heritage attractions in Cumbria.  This will enhance the educational services provided by these facilities.

The Cumbria Cultural Learning Network (CCLN) works in partnership with various arts, heritage, and cultural organisations across Cumbria. CCLN’s activity is scaled to its resources. Throughout the reporting period it faced the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic down-turn. This challenge was met by scaling back any activity to protect its assets. 

CCLN retains an option for distributing small grants to support the development of learning services in its partner organisations. However, no grants were made during this period.

Without the dedication of the volunteers CCLN would not have been able to maintain some level of activity in the continuing difficult situation for all organisations providing a learning service. 

They have continued to meet partners and associated organisations to maintain some level of engagement.  Volunteers delivered online workshops and developed on-line activities to support young people’s interview skills. These activities promoted the opportunities for careers in Museums and other heritage organisations with the aim of raising aspirations of young people in Cumbria, a particularly challenging issue.

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

CCLN continues to value its partnership with Inspira and delivered the following activity: 

Delivered careers focused World of Work (WOW) days to a total of 3,640 students in the following schools: 

- West Lakes Academy, Egremont 

- St Joseph’s RC School, Workington 

- Netherhall School, Maryport 

- Beacon Hill, Aspatria 

- Workington Academy 

- Whitehaven Academy 

- British Energy Coast University Technology College 

Participated in supporting students to develop their employability by conducting mock interviews via Zoom to 34 students. 

CCLN met with and supported a number of cultural organisations to develop their own learning services. These included the Helena Thompson Museum (Workington), Muncaster Castle, Eskdale Mill, Senhouse Roman Museum, Maryport Maritime Museum. 

CCLN collaborated with colleagues in FRAME to support the promotion of cultural learning in schools. 

Trustees and volunteers benefited from the following training: 

- The Cumbria CVS Bedrock programme 

- Using data 

- Safeguarding 

- Fundraising 

- The Theory of Change 

- Fundraising (provide by GEM) 

- Anti-racism (provided by GEM) 

- LGTBQ+ awareness 

- Managing volunteers 

The training undertaken is expected to support CCLN in developing new objectives that align with it’s charitable aims. 2022 – 2023 saw a process of exploring options in consultation with organisations that have benefited from CCLN’s work in the past and understanding their needs and the needs of potential new partners in the future.

CCLN holds zero reserves at present. Activity is currently project based and supported by external funding were appropriate. The Trustees have an ambition to build its reserves to develop its long-term viability and expand its activity.
