The end of 2019 saw a successful Christmas raffle and fundraising and out continued support for Heart Testing and we provided a grant to enable the heart testing data to be finally finished and aggregated. The data is now being analysed by a number of scientists to see what can be extrapolated.

The good news is that there is a direct correlation to longevity from Heart Testing and publishing the data and results should assist in improving health and welfare of the Irish Wolfhounds.

We also approved a grant for the University of Nottingham to provide better storage of veterinary samples with a new commercial freezer unit.

2020 brought Lockdown and our schedules of events were cancelled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The trustees carried on providing support and advice to Irish Wolfhound owners, helping re home a number of Irish Wolfhounds, through both rescue and fostering.

Despite the constrained economic times, our income rose and our general funds rose to over £40,000, providing an increasingly firm foundation and financial footing for the IWCT. In the short term, much of our work is done for free, with no financial transactions, but the work supporting Irish Wolfhound owners helps improve the welfare of hounds affected by circumstances.

We also have medium and long term efforts that engage with professionals improving genetics and health, especially heart health. Again, the trustees receive no renumeration for their efforts and much of our work is done without any fanfare, content in the knowledge that we are making a difference where it matters.

As a charity, the IWCT would like to see the results of the Heart Testing published and we are seeking to store more genetic material for future uses.
