## Annual Report for 2021
## Background
St Jude’s Church Council has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent, the Revd Canon Judith Allford, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Church of St Jude’s, St Jude’s Road, Englefield Green and for the Church Hall in Bond Street, Englefield Green.
## Membership
Members of the Council are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting in accordance with the Church Representation Rules.

PCC sub-committees and terms of reference are as follows:
## **Standing Committee**
Regular meetings to plan agenda for PCC meetings. Authorised to make decisions, exclusive of PCC, as and when necessary.
## **Worship, Outreach and Social Committee**
Regular meeting to consider aspects of mission, both spiritual and practical, within Church and in wider community. Reports back to PCC. Organises Lent groups, etc. Partial ecumenical aspect. Liturgical and music matters and planning for social events.
## **Finance and Stewardship Committee**
Meetings ad hoc to discuss PCC proposals, formulate strategies, prepare paperwork/questionnaires and analyse results.
## **Fabric Committee**
Meetings generally informal to discuss matters as they arise. Oversees Saturday morning working parties.
## **Covid-19 Committee**
Regular meetings to discuss and recommend our ongoing response to the pandemic.

## **Electoral Roll 2022**
The Church Electoral Roll for 2021 has been revised and a copy has been placed in Church. There are 85 names on it.
## ANNUAL REPORT – REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2021
In 2021 our worshipping life as a Church community was once again disrupted by COVID. In January, February and March the ECC passed a series of resolutions to suspend public worship again due to the prevalence of the virus. Our first service back in church was on Palm Sunday 28[th] March and we were able to hold services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Guy Bunce continued to assist us by live-streaming much of our public worship on our YouTube channel.
From April until the end of June we sustained a limited programme of public worship, alternating from Sunday to Sunday between an 8.00am and a 9.30am service of Holy Communion. The exception was Pentecost Sunday on 23[rd] May when two services were held and strict protocol for cleaning the church was observed in between. On Sunday 4[th] July we reintroduced a normal pattern of morning eucharistic worship, and this remained in place throughout the year. We continued, however, to administer Holy Communion in one kind only, in accordance with central Church of England guidance.
We remained grateful throughout the year to Guy Bunce for his continuing technical support and to Chloe Spencer for gift of her music. Equally we were indebted to all, including some of our Junior Church families, who supported our online worship with readings, prayers and unforgettable all-age talks which entranced us all. By November the annual Act of Remembrance at our cemetery War Memorials were able to go ahead but we took the decision not to hold our traditional parade service in church because of the continuing presence of the coronavirus. Similarly, at Christmas, we took the difficult decision not to hold our usual Crib Service. This was the second year that the Crib Service had been unable to take place, and it was greatly missed. We were grateful to the Revd Orion Edgar, Anglican Chaplain to Royal Holloway, University of London, for celebrating a Family Holy Communion on Christmas Eve, and also for regularly presiding at our 8am service of Holy Communion (BCP) on the first Sunday in each month. We were unable this year to return to our provision of Junior Church and are seeking other ways of involving our children and families in our regular worship.
Our APCM for 2021 took place on 25[th] April and was a “Hybrid” meeting, enabling those who wished to do so to attend via Zoom. Claudia Tubb and Mike Brooking were elected as churchwardens. We are especially grateful to our Church Officers, ECC members and Deanery Synod representatives as they continued to serve during such challenging times. Marion Paige-Hagg was for the first time elected as Secretary to the Council and Mike Brooking and Robert Jeffries were thanked for their work in that role during previous years. Our Electoral Roll stands at 82 members, the same number as in 2020.
2021 was a busy year for our committees. Thank you to all who have chaired and served on them, including Brian Hooker who has continued to manage our finances through the additional challenges posed by the pandemic. Andrew Sheer successfully applied on our behalf for a substantial sum of money from the Heritage Culture Recovery Fund. He has also continued to oversee the lettings of the Monsell Room which have picked up following the easing of COVID restrictions.
Our Worship Committee members took part in a “Big PCC Away Day” organised on Zoom by the Diocese of Guildford and this was followed by a personal Zoom meeting for us with Dave Welch from the Diocese. We were challenged to work on our Parish Development plan and to consider whether some of the changes to our worship pattern that have been occasioned by COVID might prove more permanent.
Our Fabric Committee has faced a number of challenges, including the breakdown of one of our church boilers. Due to the age of the boiler it has not been possible to repair it, and installation of new boilers was arranged for early 2022. During 2021 our sound system was upgraded and funds secured to future installation of a facility for live-streaming. Some of the recommendations from our quinquennial report of 2019 were addressed and others remain to be taken forward. Our COVID Committee continued to meet to address the ongoing issues presented by the pandemic.
We have continued to communicate with the church and parish via Facebook, our website and YouTube channel, banners outside St Jude’s and through a monthly email distribution of the monthly newsletter (The Ship). The use of Zoom has been a blessing in enabling us to continue to hold meetings in this way and to maintain our Bible Study groups. Several online concerts were also held. We are grateful to Geoff Chew for masterminding these and for continuing to serve as our Organist through another year. A monthly Zoom service of Compline was also introduced. From the registers, there were 6 baptisms (0 in 2020), 4 weddings (2 in 2020) and 19 funerals (13 in 2020), plus 10 (37 in 2020) funerals at local cemeteries or crematoria and 3 interments of cremated remains. Sadly, two of the funeral
services which took place in St Jude’s were those of former priests of this Parish. On 22[nd] July 2021 the Revd James Rattue conducted the Funeral Service of Canon John Fowles and on 15[th] December the Funeral Service of the Revd Lorna Smith was also held in St Jude’s. We also heard in July of the death of the Revd Beale Griffin, former Methodist Minister at St Jude’s. Two (2) Memorial Services were also held in St Jude’s, in both cases because previous COVID restrictions had prevented the attendance at the respective funeral services of many family and friends. In July a Service of Renewal of Marriage Vows was held. In December St Jude’s for the first time hosted a Christmas Service of Remembrance arranged and sponsored by Lodge Brothers Funeral Directors. The service was conducted by Andrew Reed and Judith Allford.
Our Vicar has continued to serve on the Governing Body of St Jude’s Junior School. During the year she also became a member of the shadow Governing Body of the new St Jude’s C of E Infant School, and then a member of the full Governing Body when the School formally opened in September. With the easing of pandemic restrictions we were able to welcome both schools in to St Jude’s for their Christmas Celebration Services. Our Vicar has continued to provide regular assemblies, weekly or fortnightly, at both schools.
Once COVID restrictions were eased our Village Centre re-opened. Regular lettings were gradually reinstated. Our local Flow Church has begun to use the premises for Sunday Worship. The pandemic meant some members of staff took voluntary redundancy and two new part-time members of staff were subsequently appointed to new roles within the team. Under the continuing leadership of Ali Watts and with a promised grant from the Local Authority , plans for the refurbishment of the Café were well under way by the end of the year.
Our ecumenical partnership, and in particular the outreach of the Village Centre which now includes both a Community Fridge and a Food Bank collection point, and the ministry among us of the Revd Andrew Reed, continue to bring us joy. St Jude’s also regularly donates to our local Food Bank collection point now on the Thorpe Trading Estate. During the year our Vicar served with Andrew Reed on the Circuit Invitations Committee which met to discuss the appointment of a Methodist Minister in 2022 as two retirements also take place then. We benefit greatly from Andrew Reed’s ministry, as from that of our LLM Roy Gouriet, whose Permission to Officiate was once again renewed this year, and from our occasional preacher, Diana Bendall.
It would be impossible to thank by name everyone who has once again over the past year contributed to the life and worship of St Jude’s. So much is done unseen and we are indebted to so many people in so many ways. We are delighted that 2021 saw the establishment of a St Jude’s Cleaning Team which is already doing sterling work!
We look forward to 2022 as a year when there will be less disruption and more opportunity for us to build on some of the tentative signs of growth that we begin to see at St Jude’s. As our Vicar wrote last year: _I pray that in the coming years God will lead us into growth that is not simply numerical but that will deepen our spiritual lives and understanding both as individuals and as the people of God in this place._

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Church Council of St Jude’s United Church, Englefield Green
I report on the accounts of the JCC of St Jude’s United Church Englefield Green for the year ended 31[st] December 2021
The Council is responsible for the preparation of the accounts and considers that an audit is not required under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:
examine the accounts (under section 43(3)(a) of the 1993 Act);
follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act;
and state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## Basis of the Independent Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Council concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
## Independent Examiner’s Statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- 1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the requirements of the 1993 Act
have not been met; or
- 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
