CHARIS supports and reselues refvgees and asylum seekers provlding them with tho skills thay need to integrate into the community and become independent. Founded in 2016 we work primarily in Somerset but also across the soulWest. We support refugees and asylum Seekers from all naltr)ns arKI have five main areas of aclivlty: 1. Our main Welcome Centre in Taunton. Somerset, open to all displaced people, provides English dasses. employmenl support. drop-in, benefits and budgoting support, social activities, activity dasses, signposting and r8f8rral, mental health supporl and training in new skills. 2. W8 partrw with five other organisations and charities to run a programme of additional Welcome Hubs. open to all displaced people. across Somerset 3. We sponsor and support the resettlement of vulnerable refugee families through th& UK Gov8mm8nt's Community Sponsorship Scheme, working in Somerset and with local ¢ornmunity groups across the SoLrtIFWest. 4. Additional details of objecttves and activitios (Optional infomiation) During 2022 CHARIS received income from a number of sour5 including individual and corporate donations, local authority contracts and various grants. At the end of 2022, CHARIS employed 9 members of staff and was working with 84 active volunteers. The contribution of both staff and volunteers in terms of time, energy and expertise has been enormously valuable and is recognised and significantly appreciated by the Trustees. This continues to mean thal only a small proportion of funds raised goes towards administration of the charity, namely insurance. accounts inspection etc, allowing the majority of funds to go directly lo support refugees and asylum seekers, increase awareness, and help improve integration within their communities. These hubs operate urthT a (y)ntrdCt from the l¢xal authority and provide a w8lcoming aThJ safe space for refijgees. English classes, employmenl and one to one suptrt a range of Sla1 activities and signposting for additional s8rvices. All five hubs are rK)w fully operatpjnal. 3. Comrnunlty Sponsornhip CHARIS has continued its programm8 of resettliNJ vulnerable refugae families through th8 UK Govemment's Community Swnsorshlp scheme. In 2022. we supported the rasattlamant of new families in Dorset, Devon and Comwall, whilst ntInuing the support of existing families across the South-west. Wth the help of our parln8r Green Pastures, trio new residential prowiies yre also purthased and leased for new refugee famili8s due to arrive in 2023. 4. Asylum Soèkern Our work with asylum seekers grew considerably in 2022 the arrival of increased numbers in Somorset. CHARIS supports a number of indiv5duals and families from multiple nationalities. resident within Taunton and the surrounding area. 5. Uslng our Vdce CHARIS uses its voice and experience reglonally and nationally to improva refugea rasethement in the community and support for asylum seekers. We do this Ihrough sharing leamings and good practice and helping find solutions to overcoming barriers and ehallengès. TAR March 2012
Section D Achievements and performance Summary As CHARIS reflects at the end of 2022. it has beèn a privilège to be a part of the local, regional and national response to new refugee and asylum challenges, including the response to the Homes for Ukraine scheme. 11 has been truly encouraging to see resources both in terms of funding. staffing and volunteers come together lo enable CHARIS lo undertake and complete its mission. The Trustees have reviewed the work of CHARIS and are pleased lo be abl8 to report that all the activities are in line with the objectives and aims of the charity. Each day, CHARIS sees the real transformation of vulnerable refugee families, individuals and all those displaced, the volunteers that work with them and significantly the communities in which they are resettled.
