| Objectives for 2024/25 |
Officially Launch Club Vision: Tyne Valley Canoe Club will focus on providing access to a range of Paddlesport disciplines to the local community, in a welcoming and supportive environment, creating a thirst for learning, through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. We aim to develop a physical infrastructure that supports all activity within the club. We are a responsible custodian for our waterways and the environment. Club Objectives: |
| The objective of TVCC is to promote community participation in | ||||
| healthy recreation for the residents of Tyne Valley and the | ||||
| surrounding area, by the provision of facilities and opportunities | ||||
| to participate in Paddlesport. | ||||
| AOB | Membership Fees | |||
| Discussion of how membership fees have been kept the same for | ||||
| 10 years. | ||||
| Proposal for membership fees to remain the same this year with | ||||
| possible increase to be implemented next year. | ||||
| Those present agreed that the current fees are low however Paul | ||||
| Newman confirmed that currently membership covers fixed costs | ||||
| The model followed by the club differs from other local clubs as | ||||
| we do not charge a ‘fixed fee’ or an attendance fee as other local | ||||
| clubs do. This is to ensure accessibility to the sport and the | ||||
| encouragement of members to acquire their own kit. | ||||
| Will need to be placed on agenda for 2025 AGM | ||||
| Hire Fees | ||||
| Suggestion of updating fees brought forward by Paul Newman as | ||||
| kit hire charges have not been changed or reviewed for at least | ||||
| 16 years and are not a true reflection of maintenance costs. | ||||
| Statistically assuming average inflation of 2.5% per year a 50% | ||||
| increase in the fees would be justified. | ||||
| Discussion of best way to do this suggestion of Full Kit hire for | ||||
| river kayak to equal £5 and specialist boats to equal £6. | ||||
| £2 for a river Kayak, £3 for specialist craft, 75p for sundries. A | ||||
| provision for financial help should be included. | ||||
| Thanks offered by Peter F for the work of the committee by the | ||||
| members. | ||||
Treasurer's report
-
TVCC made a loss for 2023/24 of £6.1K driven primarily by investment in new equipment (£8,688), coach training (£848) and an accrual for £600 for 2 years rent on the lockups (which Northumberland County Council had not invoiced to us) resulting in a reduction in club funds from ~ £14K at the end of '22/23 to £7.8K at the end of '23/24
-
Excluding the investment in equipment, net of grants and equipment sales and the rent accrual & pool session costs for '22/'23 we would have made a loss of £473 for the year.
-
The investment in coach training was driven largely by the 3 yearly first aid training cycle.
-
The headline result for the pool sessions was a loss of £166 but this included an unaccrued invoice for £300 from '22/23, so excluding this the pool sessions made a small surplus (effectively broke even) of £134, indicating that the fees seem to be at about the right level as long as we can maintain attendance at current level
-
● Investment in Equipment
-
£744 on new Ainsworth paddles in June '23
-
£380 on second hand medium Dagger Mamba
-
£3,199 on 5 new kayaks and spraydecks to overhaul to ageing fleet used at the club pool sessions
-
£600 on two Dagger Axioms for younger members
-
£3590 on two new sea kayaks and paddles
-
£175 on canoe spares / maintenance
-
This investment was partially offset by a grant of £2000 plus the sale of old boats for £985 and hire fees of £665 resulting in a net spend £5,038. We can also consider the net surplus on equipment last year of £1,874 from sale of old boats as helping to fund this year's investment
-
Coach Training
-
We put 6 coaches through their 3 year first aid course renewal at a cost of £630 and accrued for the club's contributions to the recent leadership qualifications achieved by Gail McIver and Dave Graydon
-
We should look at 2023/24 as a year of investment but need to plan to consolidate the club's financial position again over the next few years.
Secretary’s report
Firstly on behalf of the committee I would like to thank all of our volunteers, coaches and committee members for their time and efforts during the past year. As a voluntary organisation we could not operate without their commitment. We would however benefit from more help in the general running of the club.
Current membership renewals stand at 59 which is up on last year at this stage (54). The renewal process appears to have gone smoothly as it is only the second year of using SPOND.
This year the committee has been working hard to strengthen the future of the club. Secure our tenure agreement with Northumberland County Council by now being fully registered with HM Land Registry.
Support coaches and leaders in their continued personal development. Produce and set in action our Development plan for 2024-2027. Begin enquiries around planning permissions for the country park. Update our banking structure. Apply for grants to allow for investment in equipment. Maintain existing equipment. Acquire updated equipment.
All of this has allowed us to achieve our British Canoeing (Paddle UK) Quality Club Status. This should enable us to move forward with plans to develop our base at Tyne Riverside Park. We look forward to sharing further details with members and seeking their input as this progresses.
Congratulations to those members that have been able to achieve their leadership awards in the past year. We will hopefully be able to provide additional trips and events in the future with the additional capacity provided by their efforts.
Chair’s Report
Club Vision:
Tyne Valley Canoe Club will focus on providing access to a range of Paddlesport disciplines to the local community, in a
welcoming and supportive environment, creating a thirst for learning, through the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
We aim to develop a physical infrastructure that supports all activity within the club. We are a responsible custodian for
our waterways and the environment.
Committee meetings held in 2023 16 th May, 31 st July, 17 th October, 5 th March with this meeting being dedicated to work, 26th March on an updated 3-year Development Plan.
TVCC Chair / Coaching Officer
A BIG Thank You to those Coaches and Leaders who have supported sessions throughout the past year at the river and in
the pool. It is important that we progress paddlers through pathways to prepare for succession, develop future coaches
and leaders and committee positions. Canoeing experience is not a requirement for a committee role, only transferrable
skills to move the club forward in its development.
Something to look forward to this year will be the Olympic Games in Paris. Make sure you watch the kayaking as well as
other sports.
Quality Mark
One of the highlights of the year has to be achieving this prestigious award. Many hours went into updating policies and
procedures, risk assessments and other club operations.
The club has updated the Club Development Plan and We have a defined ‘Vision’ for the first time in 35 years.
Grant Awards
The club has been successful in applying for the Town Council Grant for £1000 to help with club running costs
We were also successful in the Community Chest Grant award of £2000.
The club is awaiting the outcomes for 2024 Grant Applications to PTC and Community Chest.
Membership
Membership is healthy and has grown rapidly thanks partially due to the high-profile activity on the Public Facebook
page. The committee had to block on new memberships before Christmas as coaches were inundated with new
members. We do have a shortfall of junior members.
Pool Sessions have been highly successful with some great development in paddlers skills, especially with catching the
waves. The committee reacted immediately following three separate incidents of injury, two of which were related. Risk
assessments were amended to put in place measures to avoid further injuries during sessions.
River Sessions Friday nights have been well supported with lots of activities including Canoe, and kayak coached sessions. SUP sessions have not been very popular in 2023. The committee and coaching group tried a new approach to free up space for coached sessions by introducing Self
Programmed Non coached sessions which proved very popular. Members Coach/Leader Development
Gail and Margaret have completed Paddlesport Touring Leader Qualification Gail received 100% subsidy.
Dave Graydon was successful with WW Leader assessment and was supported with 100% funding subsidy.
Six coaches and Leaders have renewed First Aid Qualifications financed by TVCC. Dave Graydon will be accessing a
course over the weekend of the AGM and has requested support for the costs. Peter Fail and Lorraine Hodgson gained their Sea Kayak Personal Performance Award. Social Events –
Big Paddle River clean-up 11 th June 23 was another success. 20 volunteers 18 bags of rubbish including traffic
cones, child’s high chair bicycles and car tyres.
Come & Try It Open Day during Music in the Park Event 15 th July was a great day and the Google Sign up form
worked very well. We did have an interlude during a thunderstorm to add further excitement throughout the
day.
End of Summer BBQ 15 th Sept Was well attended
Prudhoe Youth Project Pool Water Safety Awareness and kayaking Session 22 nd Sept 23 went very well
Christmas Meal December at the Aramee was well attended with 23 members End of Pool Session Pizza & Pasta at the Gloria’s March 24 was also well attended by 19 members.
Sea Trips 2023/24 Sea Kayaking has proved to be very popular this year with lots of interest and activity happening.
Camping and Sea Kayaking Early May Bank Holiday weekend around the Firth of Forth Bass Rock and Forth Road
Bridge.
Camping Trip to North Yorkshire Coast with some exciting seas to really stretch those who attended.
We had a large group attend the Week of Sea Kayaking in the Lochinver /Assynt area of Northern Scotland.
Some members camped while others slummed it in the Cottage. This proved to be a central hub for evening
socials with Haggis and Crabs on the menu.
24 th June Berwick to Eyemouth exploring huge caves
Boulmer to Low Newton Sea Trip May 23 and 10 th Sept with the climax being to beat the storm clouds.
Farne Islands Sea Trip 2 nd Sept with very big tides and lots of fun playing the Tidal races. On a chilly February clear day 3 members new to the sea kayaking as well as some salty dogs paddled from
Roker to Souter Lighthouse and return
Glamping social trip March 29 th – 1sr April 24 to Glenridding Lake District Ullswater Thirlmere and Derwentwater
including Sea Kayaking Demo Day.
River Trips
Many river trips have happened over the year in both kayak and canoe.
Although the Tyne Tour was cancelled some members still got out on the club planned trips. Regular trips on the North & South Tyne. Warden Gorge Park & Play x3 Hexham to Corbridge and Corbridge to Prudhoe
mainly canoe sessions
X3 trips to the River Eden
Two separate trips to the Lune 11th November and Keswick Greta were new rivers to many members
Grade 2 and Grade 3 Paddles on the River Tees
Tees Barrage Low Flow nights and weekend non club activities have happened.
Slalom Taster days have been attended by some club members hosted by Hexham Canoe Club.
Equipment
Club has invested heavily in new equipment purchase to update the fleet. x2 Dagger Axiom 6.9 Junior boats, x2 Dagger
GT 7.5, and GTX kayaks, Dagger Mamba, small and large and a 2 nd hand Intermediate size, 2 x new Etain and Atlantic Sea
kayaks. Sea kayak paddles and x12 Neoprene Yak Spraydecks Unfortunately x3 were destroyed by potentially misuse,
and have now been replaced FOC.
This and other incidents have raised the need to ensure club equipment is looked after and not abused or misused. It
also highlights the need to report any faulty equipment.
We had a very successful maintenance session on the 17 th June followed by a BBQ and then just recently on the 6 th April
where equipment was repaired/ improved. Plans for 2023/24
Boat House development
Help has been sought to help with Planning Applications. It was highlighted that the Lease agreement needed to be
altered as the plans of our site did not match what we actually have. This was due to the delays from
Northumberland CC. NCC are now completing amendments which should allow the club to apply for planning for the new build.
Once planning has been approved, we will seek tenders then apply for grant funding. Continue to raise profile of club through social media and by offering a taster day and community-based events, including links with school groups.
Develop new Coaches and Leaders. Seek a strong committee to work on projects.
