Letter fro the Co-Chrs
The 20192020 acadec year proved to be an extraordnarly challengng year for The Nucleo Project and the county t serves n North Kensngton and North Westnster.
Through a cobnaton of the ense dedcaton and skll of all the Nucleo tea led by founder Lucy Magure, the adaptablty and cotent of our young uscans and ther fales and our planned nvestent n adnstratve capacty, we were nevertheless stll able to delver close to 5,000 hours of teachng and enseble playng throughout the year wth only a bref hatus n dMarch.
The Nucleo Project's purpose s to acheve socal change n our county through the edu of an ntensveenseble experence. Our focus contnues to be the pursut of uscal excellence and the any acheveents of Nucleo uscans detaled n the followng report act as an nspraton forour county. Perhaps the hghlght of the year was our 7th annversary concert featurng ore than 300 chldren and young uscans who cae together to perfor and celebrate on one joyous nght n prelockdown West London. Another sgnfcant hghlght and a frst was wnnng the GlobalGvng Accelerator crowdfundng challenge durng a threeweek capagn, rounded off wth a spectacular onlne rectal by the Nucleo young uscans.

As we hghlghted n our letter last year, our nvestent n adnstratve capacty through the strengthenng of our organsatonal desgn was ntended to ake our charty "better prepared for the challenges that face a growng organsaton". Buldng on that work the Trustees cossoned and copleted a Strategc Revew durng ths acadec year. The prary purpose of the revew was to help dentfy and ap out our opportuntes for growth. The revew drew not only the opnons and nsghts of Nucleo's leadershp tea and ts Board of Trustees but also the nsghts and analyss fro our broader group of stakeholders. As a result, the Trustees and leadershp tea feel well prepared to follow through on our growth plan when the Covd health crss abates.
Fnally, as The Nucleo Project reans entrely free to our young uscans, we would lke to thank our growng nuber of supporters. We are especally grateful for the loyal support fro vsonary chartable trusts and foundatons, pronent local chartes and any hghly otvated prvate ndvduals. We are also grateful for the freely gven te, dedcaton and expertse of our fellow trustees. All of the above play a vtal role n enablng The Nucleo Project to delver nspratonal opportuntes to our benefcares the chldren and young people of North Kensngton and Westnster.

Yer n Revew
20120 ws yer of chnge chllenge nd reslence for The Nucleo Project
Despte the huge upheaval caused by Covd19, The Nucleo Project contnues to be a thrvng and popular 'usc for socal acton' prograe n our local county. In 201920 enrolent grew fro 327 at the begnnng of the acadec year to a total of 33 n March, pror to lockdown. Ths contnued popularty dd however put pressure on our facltes at the Dalgarno Trust.
And so we found a new hoe for our an sessons at Queen’s Park Prary School, where we started workng n Septeber. We were delghted to have found a ste so wellsuted to our needs and settled n quckly thanks to the kndness and support of the school staff and county.
We contnued to serve a dverse county n whch a hgh proporton of chldren are socally dsadvantaged. In Kensngton Chelsea 37.3 of chldren lve n poverty and twce as any state school chldren are elgble for free school eals as the natonal average. Ensurng that our prograe s accessble to the local chldren who need t ost s a contnued prorty for us.

We also ade proveents to our teachng prograe. Fro Septeber 2019, we offered brass, woodwnd and percusson nstruents to younger chldren fro the age of 5, whereas prevously all our junor students started on strng nstruents. Ths wll enable us to acheve the sae strong uscal results at early ages n all sectons of the orchestra, as we have already begun to do for the strngs.
Strpes now has 43 ebers who are akng great progress. Creatng a new orchestra has also released places n exstng junor ensebles for less
experenced players.
The frst half of the year offered soe wonderful opportuntes to showcase our students' talent. On 27th Noveber 2019 we held our annual Celebraton Rectal at St John’s Church, Nottng Hll. Whle ost of our actvtes are focused on orchestral playng, each year ths event celebrates the pnnacle of acheveent n solo and chaber perforances across all agegroups at Nucleo.
We also launched our new Strpes Orchestra for ore advanced young strng players 9 and under. Ths enables us to teach these talented youngsters n a way that s approprate for ther age group wthout restrctng ther abton.

In Deceber 2019 we held our second annual Concerto Copetton, whch was once agan judged by coposer and foundng eber of the Nucleo board of trustees Edund Jollffe. Ths year's wnner was 14yearold Danel Jurado Hoshno, who subsequently perfored as a solost at our annversary concert n February. Ths year's concert celebrated the 7th annversary of The Nucleo Project, and was held at Porchester Hall on 12th February 2020. Our afternoon
perforances featured the ebers of Nucleo's younger and ore junor ensebles, whle the an event n the evenng showcased our Strpes, Junor Syphony and Syphony Orchestras, as well as our advanced Plus Enseble.
Danel's perforance of Faure's Elege for Cello and Orchestra, accopaned by the Plus Enseble, was a hghlght. The concert ended wth all four orchestras gatherng on stage to perfor a rousng rendton of our sgnature encores. We can't agne when we wll next be able to cra over 100 chldren onto one stage, whch akes ths eory all the ore precous.
Throughout the last year we have been supportng our best young uscans through our scholarshp prograe, whch has enabled 30 of our ost cotted and prosng young uscans to receve weekly ndvdual or pared lessons on ther nstruent.

Ths s n addton to the group rehearsals and group lessons n whch they take part. In spte of all the challenges ths year has brought, we are thrlled to report that soe of our young uscans stll anaged to prove theselves aong the best n the whole country.
In Deceber sx chldren took ABRSM exanatons, wth all achevng ether ert or dstncton. And ten young people were offered places n the Natonal Chldren’s Orchestra.
In February four uscans audtoned successfully for the Chneke Junor Orchestra, jonng three older Nucleo uscans who were already ebers.
And ths cong Septeber three ore Nucleo students wll be jonng the Royal College of Musc Junor Prograe, where they wll jon four Nucleo students contnung to study there.
One Nucleo student was offered a place at Wells Cathedral School as a usc specalst, startng ths Septeber. We are sorry to see h go, but enorously excted for h about the opportuntes that le ahead.
Our young people have had so uch to contend wth ths year: we are so proud of what they have acheved n very dffcult crcustances.

In March, the UK went nto lockdown wth very lttle notce, whch eant that for a bref perod we could not operate at all. However, we were all deterned that whle the lockdown eant the cancellaton of any thngs n our students’ lves, usc would not be one of the. We worked quckly to plan and launch an onlne prograe, whch we tralled over the Easter holday. Ths nvolved a huge effort on the part of our senor anageent tea and our teachers, who quckly had to adapt to new ways of workng. Followng a successful plot, we began offerng onlne sessons at the start of the suer ter.
Uptake of our onlne prograe was relatvely strong, wth 241 chldren partcpatng. Although we contacted all fales about the exstence of our onlne prograe and encouraged ther partcpaton, not all joned: soe chldren were less keen to get nvolved onlne, whle for others t was an ssue of nternet andor coputer access. We were able to provde a handful of tablets for students who would not otherwse have been able to jon onlne lessons, and our “Nucleo hoe delvery servce” kept our students provded wth new reeds, replaceent strngs and rosns, as well as swappng and upgradng outgrown nstruents, and even atteptng a few aateur repars.

Our concert at Leghton House, planned for Aprl, was sadly cancelled because of the pandec. But we weren’t deterred and held our frst ever onlne rectal on the 17th June, whch was a great success. 415 people tuned n on the evenng to watch the perforance, whch was presented by one of our students and s stll avalable to vew on YouTube. It was a great opportunty for the chldren to show how hard they had been practsng durng lockdown and t was also our frst foray nto vrtual event fundrasng. In our efforts to keep the Nucleo
county connected throughout the suer ter, we created a nuber of vdeos and onlne challenges whch we shared on socal eda. Perhaps the hghlght was our “Thank you NHS” vdeo, ade n May, whch featured perforances by over 100 Nucleo students, parents and teachers and can stll be vewed on YouTube.
Keepng our chldren playng through lockdown was a true tea effort by the whole Nucleo county, and we were nspred by the efforts and atttudes of our chldren, parents and staff.

In July, snce we could not coe together for our usual endofyear perforances, we ended our suer ter wth a seres of 15 Zoo rectals for our students and parents, n whch chldren fro all Nucleo groups had the opportunty to perfor and deonstrate what they learned ths year.
It wasn’t qute how we had envsoned endng the school year when we started t back n Septeber, but as always, the perforances rended us of the great strdes our chldren and young people are akng, and nspred us to look forward to another fantastc year together at Nucleo whatever t ay brng

PERFORMANCE & ACHIEVEMENTS
Orgnstonl Progress
A lot of portant work has been takng place behnd the scenes at Nucleo ths year. We have been workng wth a strategy consultant who dentfed four key areas for developent: reducng our relance on our founderCEO, developng greater proof of pact, workng on youth leadershp and broadenng our fundng sources. Fro these four key as we developed a detaled consoldaton plan, wth proveents already n evdence. On the 15th Aprl 2020 two Deputy Prograe Drectors were apponted, who now anage a lot of the logstcal work around the prograe.
We have also strealned recordkeepng and enrolent procedures, our fnancal reportng s uch proved and s
enablng us to forecast ore accurately and we wll be pleentng a new evaluaton fraework at the start of the next acadec year. Soe of these proveents, such as the nstallaton and use of MyMuscStaff to anage our student attendance and tetable, ade transton to an onlne prograe n Aprl uch ore straghtforward.
We have not ade progress as quckly as we would have hoped n ters of ontorng and evaluaton ths year. Ths was partly because there were ore edate prortes n our consoldaton plan and partly because we lacked the n house resources to develop our evaluaton work further. We are very pleased that work on our evaluaton and learnng prograe s now ovng forward thanks to dedcated fundng secured. Ths grant wll go towards work wth Sound Connectons, who provde consultancy on evaluaton and pact assessent for usc organsatons, as well as a partte

Despte the cancellaton of our Aprl concert and the pact of Covd19 on funders, t has been a reasonable year for fundrasng perforance, wth 437k rased ths fnancal year, copared wth 325k for the coplete 20119 fnancal year. However, 67,000 of ths was desgnated for consoldaton actvtes and so was not avalable to support general runnng costs. As a young organsaton wth lted reserves t s essental that we anage our spendng carefully, to ensure the organsaton s stable gong forwards. Ths s partcularly portant gven the econoc uncertanty caused by the pact of the pandec.
Dversty nd Incluson
In July we were thrlled to be accepted nto the frst cohort of I'M IN, the tool desgned to help usc organsatons buld a dversty and ncluson strategy. Workng through the toolkt we dentfed our strengths and weaknesses n relaton to dversty, subttng our answers and accopanyng evdence for revew. The I'M IN dversty and ncluson specalsts then analysed our responses and created a report for the charty, whch provoked dscusson and helped us to dentfy solutons wth the ultate goal of helpng buld a ore nclusve culture at Nucleo. We look forward to pleentng the recoendatons and ensurng that gong forwards dversty and ncluson are at the heart of our organsaton.

The prncpal fundng source for The Nucleo Project durng the reportng perod has contnued to be grants fro trusts and foundatons. These can ether be desgnated for general and ongong runnng costs or for the delvery of specfc projects wthn the scope of our actvtes.
sk ngeent
The trustees recognse ther responsblty for the anageent of rsks faced by the charty both fnancal and otherwse. A rsk regster s antaned by one of the cochars and revewed annually by the board or whenever an arsng rsk s brought to ther attenton.
At present the greatest rsk to the charty s the huan resource rsk that arses due to sgnfcant dependence on key ebers of the delvery tea. The charty plans to tgate ths over the cong years by buldng developng and tranng the tea n order to reduce ths dependence. As we grow we are cognsant that space s an ssue and so we are actvely engagng wth other nsttutons to source larger preses.
ublc eneft
The trustees have had due regard for the Charty Cossons gudance on publc beneft and are confdent that the actvtes of the charty provde current and ongong beneft to the publc.
