Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The charity currently works to advance the
education of the children in the coastal
region of Kenya from Malindi in the North to
Mombasa in the South in particular by
1. Providing and assisting in the
provision of facilities for education
at Watamu Academy Junior School,
Timboni, Watamu.
2. Providing sponsorship for children
at primary and secondary schools.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
During the financial year commencing 1st
August 2023 end ending 31st July 2024 a
total of £23,313 was raised and received by
the charity from a variety of different
sources.
The expenditure for this financial year was
£ 21,191 ( see Receipts and payments
accounts for the year.)
This last year Change a Chapter has
continued to receive from two different
Trust funds and many donations from kind
hearted generous individuals.
The trustees all work on an entirely
voluntary basis. We know that the charity
continues to receive donations because the
people and Trust funds who donate know
that every financial gift goes directly to
improving the welfare of the children who
live in extreme poverty in Kenya.

Primary school support
The charity has continued to support the
education for all the children with a named
sponsor and the donations received has
also meant we have been able to support
three other children. Currently we have 10
pupils in primary school which includes 3
pupils who are doing their last two years if
primary school Class 7 and 8 now renamed
as Junior secondary school
During this year’s financial period the
children have had three academic terms.
Secondary school support
We have four students at secondary
boarding school, three girls and one boy.
One girl is due to sit her final national
exams later this year and then we have one
girl in Form 3, one in Form 2 and in
January 2024 we had one boy commence
Form 1 at a boy’s boarding school .
We support one boy at secondary day
school. In total we support 5 secondary
school students
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees confirm that they have
referred to the guidance issued for the

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 During the financial year commencing 1st
August 2023 and ending 31stJuly 2024 a
total of £ 23, 313 was raised and received
by the charity from a variety of different
sources. The expenditure for the financial
year was £21,191 (see Receipts and
Payment accounts for the year).
We as trustees are very pleased with the
achievements of the charity this year
especially in light of the very significant
impact on the charity of the vastly
increased cost of everything in Kenya and
the new costly demands of the revised
education curriculum know as the CBC,
competency based curriculum.
The cost of school fees, school meals,
stationary, textbooks uniforms and
transport costs have increased
substantially again this year and they keep
rising.
Primary school education
We have been able to continue to provide
the needs for the children including; school
fees, two school meals per day,
examination charges, stationary, school
uniforms and PE kits and additional
requirements for mandatory school trips as
well as the extra school fee for computer
classes.
The costs for the CBC, Continuous based
curriculum are still increasing .The
mandatory cost of termly projects and
school trips has impacted us but as we
have less children now in primary school
we have managed to be able to
accommodate this.
We had one child complete his Kenyan
Certificate of Primary school national
exams in November last year and he

secondary school. He is the last child going through the former education system. The appreciation from the children for their support from the charity is humbling. They continue to write cards and letters to their sponsors and other donors and the Patrons of the charity. They put a lot of effort into these and the personal touch from the child to the sponsor is much appreciated. “ Thank you for paying my school fees and textbooks. I am enjoying my learning and we are doing 15 subjects. The subjects I like the most are maths and Kiswahili Brian N “Your great love and support have made a big difference in my life and thank you a lot. I want to tell you that I am doing well at school. I promise you I am working harder to make you more, proud of me” Claudia “I wish to thank you for your love , kindness and care. Thank you greatly for buying me textbooks. You have been a big support and hope in my life and I thank you” Leah Secondary School Education We did not have any child sit their final secondary school exams this year. However we did have one boy start his Form 1 at a very good boys boarding school in January 2024. He appears to have settled in well to a life that is in complete contrast to the small mud hut that his mother rents for her children’s home. In total we are currently supporting five pupils at secondary school, four are at boarding school and one boy is at a day school. We have three girls at boarding school one each in Form 2, 3 and Form 4. The girl in Form 4 will sit her KCSE, Kenyan Certificate of secondary school examinations in November this year. We have one boy in Form 1 at boarding school and one boy in Form 2 at secondary day school. All these pupils are on the education system that is being phased out.

6

The pupils remain dedicated to their studies and are highly appreciative to the generosity of their sponsors to enable them to attend secondary school when many of their friends and neighbours can simply not afford to go to secondary school. Junior Secondary School This is still relatively new with its first intake in January 2023. Basically it is Class 7 and 8 of primary school and is on the same campus as the primary school students and now includes Form 1 of the original Form 1-4 of secondary school education. It is costly. We have one girl in her second year and had two children commence their first year in January 2024. It demands new uniforms and other additional requirements including expensive textbooks. It is challenging due to is costs but so far as a charity we have been able to meet the demands for this this current financial year. All the secondary school students continue to write letters to their sponsors and the children are so appreciative. “ Thank you for all the preparations to make sure I joined Form 1 for my secondary education which I know was not easy. I take this opportunity to thank you so much for you endless love and amazing support that you have shown me “ Talanta Form 1 “ I wish to thank you so much for supporting my education. Thank you for paying for my school fees and my shopping’s. I want to inform you that I am doing well at school and I am really enjoying secondary education. You have been there for me and I thank you for your great care and support.’ Emily Form 2 “I want to thank you for all your good love and kindness. This year I joined Junior secondary school. I am now learning new subjects my favourite subjects are English, home science and agriculture”

7

Avril Class 7 primary/year 1 JSS. I would like to thank you for paying towards my school fess. I really appreciate you support. I have now joined junior secondary . There are lots of changes with different projects and nine subject which I find interesting” Brian K Class 7 primary/year 1 JSS Medical There has been a lot of poor health and sickness in the children we support this year. These tend to mostly be stomach and bowel infections and chest infections. We have had four cases of pneumonia and one teenager was also involved in a motorbike accident. One young girl also developed malnutrition again as she frequently will only get her two meals at school and nothing to eat in the evening. The children continue to receive deworming medication. The cost of medication has risen in price like everything else but despite the large medical expenses all the children have received good medical care and have been able to continue with their primary and secondary school studies and examinations which otherwise not have been feasible.

Notes to financial statements for the year ended 31[st] July 2024

Reduction in overall expenditure has been due to two main factors. The salary bill has fallen as one of our long-term teachers has moved to another school and the number of named children sponsored by Change a Chapter has become less. Some of our sponsors have had to withdraw either because of ill health or other reduced circumstances. A number of pupils have now successfully finished their secondary school and moved onto either employment or further education (which is not part of our remit). In addition, although Kenya has been affected like the UK with a huge increase in food prices and other commodities, we have benefitted from an improved exchange rate. This has averaged at 160KSH to the pound. Last year the average was 150KSH to then pound. This has allowed Change a Chapter to offer to all its children the same advantages as last year despite generally rising costs across the board.
