This last financial year Change a Chapter has
continued to receive donations from kind
hearted individuals and two separate trust
funds.
The trustees of the charity all work on a
voluntary basis. The charity continues to
receive donations as the donors know that
every financial gift goes directly to improving
the welfare of the children who live in extreme
poverty In Kenya.
Primary school support
The charity has continued to support the
education for all the children with a named| 3 sponsor and the donations received have also meant four other children have been supported to attend primary school. In total we currently have ten pupils attending primary school. August 2022- November 2022 was the fourth academic term of the year as the school calendar was still on catch up from the closure of the schools for 9 months in 2020. The academic terms for 2023 are now back to before the pandemic with three academic terms set for 2023. Secondary school support Our secondary school students had their fourth academic term of the year from August 2022December 2022. For some of our students their term, was longer due to them taking their national Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education exams. Between August 2022 to December we had five students at secondary school. Three students sat their national secondary school exams in December. In February 2023 we had two students commence secondary school and this will be for four years. These students are on the old - style curriculum which is being phased out. In addition, we had one girl start Junior Secondary school. This is the first year that Junior secondary school has existed in Kenya. It is based on the newer education curriculum. We the trustees are pleased with the
achievements of the charity this year despite
the impact on the charity due to the escalating
costs of everything in Kenya. This has
significantly raised the cost of school fees,
school meals, stationary, textbooks, school
uniforms and shoes and transport costs have
soared.
**Primary school education**
We have continued to provide the needs for
the children including: school fees, school
meals, examination charges, school uniforms,
transport and additional requirements for the
children including the cost of a mandatory
school trip. In addition the children are now
expected to attend computer classes which
comes with an additional fee.
The costs for the CBC, Continuous Based
Curriculum keep increasing. The Minister of
Education has added in additional mandatory| 5 rules which include the cost of termly school projects and school trips which the children are then assessed on. So far, we have been able to provide financially for the children for this. We had two children sit their Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education Examinations November 2002. They both passed and have now commenced secondary education. The children are all highly appreciative of the support from the charity and they continue to write letters of thanks to their sponsors and to the charity. _“ Thank you for your great love support and care. I am in my last year of primary school and will be sitting my national examinations November of this year”._ Talanta _“I would like to thank you for paying for my school fees. Through Change a Chapter a lot has changed in my life and I thank God for you”._ Brian **Secondary School Education** The secondary school students had their fourth academic term of the year between August and December. Three of our students sat their Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education exams in December. They all succeeded. One of the girls did so well she will be eligible for a place at a government university. This also means she will be eligible for a government grant to help pay her fees. She is applying to do a Degree in Education. The two other secondary candidates are eligible to go on and do Diploma’s which they have applied for. We the trustees were very pleased with the result of our candidates 6 We had two students who started at secondary school this year, a boy and a girl. The girl had the highest score for her national primary school examinations of any student we have had since the charity has been running. Due to her score she was selected to go to a National School. She enrolled as a boarder to sit her Form 1 in February 2023. The boy also joined secondary school at the same time, however he is going to a day school. Currently we therefore support 4 students at secondary school, three girls and one boy. These children are all on the education curriculum that is being phased out. **Junior Secondary School** This year, 2023 was the first year Kenya has had Junior secondary education based on the newest education curriculum. In the older education system the children had 1 year pre-primary, eight years in primary school and then 4 years at secondary school. The new curriculum consists of 2 years of preprimary, 6 years of primary, 3 years of junior secondary and 3 years of senior secondary. We had one orphaned girl who has progressed to Junior secondary and she enrolled in February this year. The school is at the same location as our primary school pupils. Like the primary school students the secondary school students also write to their sponsors as did the three children who completed their secondary education in December 2022. The gratefulness of the children is humbling. _“I take this opportunity to thank you for your support. You have really been there for me when I needed it. Indeed your support has made me happy. Thanks for the support you have given me since 2011. You have sacrificed a lot for my education and I thank you”._ Christopher _“I am writing to express my appreciation that your continued support to Change a Chapter has made it possible for me to join boarding school. I am the only one of my 8 sisters and brothers who has managed to join secondary school. I Iack words to express how I feel . I sincerely from the depths of my heart say THANKYOU”._ Emily **Medical** In this financial year there has been a lot of sickness in the children we support. One girl’s anaemia continued, there have been numerous cases of bowel and chest infections in the children. Two children were very unwell with pneumonia. All the children have been regularly receiving deworming medication. As a result of the good medical care the children have received, the children have been able to continue with their primary and secondary studies which otherwise would not have been possible. **Trustees oversight in Kenya during the financial year.** The Kenyan based Change a Chapter coordinator and their deputy have been in regular communications regarding the children. The principal coordinator provides regular reports of expenditure and ensures that funds sent to Kenya have been used as per the trustee’s authorisation. Two of the trustees have been to Kenya in this financial year. The children have all been seen individually. In addition all the children and the wonderful team we have in Kenya had a get together. The children continue to call each other their brother or sister, which is moving to witness. We do not employ any permanent staff, however there are two people in Kenya who work on a part time basis as is required. 3.Prices in Kenya have escalated in a similar way to the UK. This has especially affected the cost of transport and food. 4.We have been helped this year by an improved exchange rate which has averaged out at 150ksh to the pound. However getting money to the point of need when necessary has been made considerably more difficult because of some financial institutions refusing to release donations (PayPal) or suddenly refusing to send money saying “it is no longer our policy to support charities”(World Remit). In addition, payments from the English bank to the Kenyan bank have on occasions taken in excess of 14 days. Despite these difficulties funds have been supplied for the education, transport, food and medical care for a number of Kenyan orphans. We continue to have a reasonable balance of funds in the UK bank which is where we prefer to keep them because of safeguarding issues. 15
